VERNON ROSS AND ERRETT S. RHOADS, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNORS TO ROSS RHOADS' COMPANY, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI. A CORPORATION OF MIS- SOUR/I.
swan-mom: cons'rrworron.
Application filed July 26 1920. Serial No. 399,059.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that we, VERNON Ross and ERRETT S. RHoADs, citizens of the United States, and residents of Kansas City, in the county of Jackson, State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Store-Front Construction, of which stitute a factor ,in the 1 illustrating one form of'construction which we have devised for embodying the proposed the following is a complete specification.
The present invention relates to store front construction, andaims to provide an improved glass securing means particularly adapted for the proper retention of window lights of the heavy plate glass type ordinarily employed in store front window casings.
Accordingly, we have sought to provide an improvement over the type of store front which utilizes a resilient pressure upon the window glass for securing the same in position, and have devised a clamping scheme which exerts an unyielding pressure upon the glass and serves to retain the same in place in a more positive manner.
It is also an object of the invention to provide aclamping or glass securing means of this character which will afford the proper range of adjustment for accommodatis proposed to employ moulding or finishing strips which will exert no pressure upon the glass, either directly or indirectly, in contrast to'p rior constructions in which said moulding or finishing strips usually conretaining means. 7
Vith the foregoing general objects in view, thejinvention will now bedescribed by reference to the accompanyingdrawing glass clamping or' improvements, after whichthe novel features therein will be particularly set forth and claimed.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a broken plan view, in irregular sections, illustrating a portion of a store front construction embodying the present improvements;
Figures 2 and 3 are sectional views representing sections taken on the lines 22 and 3-3, respectively, of Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a sectional perspective view illustrating a portion of the window casing with the sheathing strip which lines the glass clamping face, and glass supporting led e of said casing.
eferring now to the drawing in detail, this illustrates the proposed featuresof improvement in relation to a window casing structure, indicated generally by the reference numeral 5, the said casing being formed with the usual glass clamping face 6 and glass supporting ledge 7. The detail views shown on the drawing may, of course, represent any section of the window casing 5;
formed with a rearwardly extending margin 10 provided with an offset 12 for. engagementlwith a longitudinal recess 14 in the casing 5, for aiding in securing the sheathing strip in place, as well as improving the smooth finish of the construction.
The windowglass 15 is supported upon a series of suitable blocks 16 located at ap propriate intervals along the upper face of ing strip, and at corresponding intervals between the said blocks 16, the base portion 9 of the sheathing strip is formed with an anchoring rib 17 so stamped as to extend at an angle to the plane of the face 6 of the window casing, as shown in Figure 1. For each of the anchoring ribs 17, a comparatively rigid clamping piece 18 is provided,
the base or anchoring portion 9 of the sheath- A F each piece 18 being formed with an inwardly pro ecting glass engaging portion 19 .(see figure 2), and also with an inwardly projecting cam edge 20 adapted for adjustable clamping engagement with the rib 17 (see Figure 1). Suitable spacing plates or strips 21 formed integral with or separate from clamping portion 8, are interposed at intervals'between the glass 15 and said clamping portion 8 of the sheathing strip, and for securing each of the clamping pieces 18 to the window casing, a fastening device, such as a screw 22, is passed through the body portion of the piece 18 and through a slot 23 in the clamping face portion 8 of the sheathing, said slot 23 being of a length approximately equal to that of the rib 17 this being for the purpose of allowing adjustment of clam ing piece 18 along its corresponding rib 1 for accommodating different thicknesses of glass 15, the slot 23 enabling the screw 22 to be secured to the clamping face 6 of the window casing at any point opposite the rib 17.
he free end of each clamping piece 18 projects a slight distance beyond its glass enga ing portion 19 for affording a retaining nger 24 extending in spaced relation to the outer face of the glass 15 and permitting retaining engagement with one of the flanges 25 of a moulding or finishing strip 26 Which is stamped from suitable sheet material adapted to impart a certain degree of resiliency to the edges of the moulding strip. The other marginal flange 27 of said strlp 26 is turned inwardly and adapted to be snapped into retaining engagement with the outer marginal bead'28 formed upon the free edge of the base or anchoring portion 9 of the sheathing strip; for facilitating engagement of the said flange 27 and head 28, the width of the base or anchoring portion 9 of the sheathing strip is such as to permit the outer portion thereof to be sprung upwardly, as indicated in Figures 2 and 3, for the purpose of inserting the flange 27 beneath the head 28 and into retaining engagement therewith.
It will thus be apparent that we have devised a compact and extremely simple construction for fulfilling the desired object of theinvention.- The series of clamping pieces 18 exert a comparatively rigid clamping pressure upon the glass 15, and the provision of the cam portion 20 in conjunction with the anchoring rib 17 and the slots 23 in the sheathing strip, enables the clamping means to be adjusted for varying thicknesses of glass 15 and the parts secured together at any point along the rib 17 and the corresponding slot 23. No separate fastening devices are required for the attachment of the moulding or finishing strip 26, since this is applied by simply hooking its flange 25 over the retaining fingers 24 of the clamping pieces 18, and then snapping its other flange portion 27 beneath the bead 28 of the sheathin strip, and when the said moulding or finlshing strip is in place, there are no fastening or clamping devices whatever exposed to view. Thus a very smooth, neat and attractive exterior appearance is obtained by means of the described construction and it will be understood that the moulding or finishing strip 26 is made use of only for the purpose of enclosing the other parts and obtaining the required finished appearance and is not utilized in any way as one of the elements of the clamping mechanism, the glass 15 being wholly supported and heldin place by the other parts of the construction. It will furthermore be seen that there are no complicated parts in the construction, the operation of fitting or assembling the parts together and securing the clamping members in position being so simple as to require only unskilled workmen to properly install the construction complete.
While we have illustrated and described what now is deemed to constitute the preferred form of construction, we desire to reserve the right to make such changes or modifications as may fairly fall within the scope of the following claims:
We claim:
