My invention relates to modifications and improvements of the objectof Patent No. 1,340,990 granted to Carl Still and Carl iVessel for a coke oven plant, and is sinnlarly to the said invention of the purpose to remove from a stationary colre quenching bench and to load into wagons or the like stored masses of coke in coherent piles, at the same time the coke being screened in a convenient manner.
The essential feature of my invention consists in the combination, with a substantially horizontal bench for quenching and storing coke discharged from coke ovens, of a car travelling along the out-side of said bench and bearing means for scraping off coke masses from the bench and screening them while being loaded into wagons or cars, all as hereinafter described and claimed in the annexed claims.

The travelling loading car a, in the form shown in the drawings, is also constructed asa wagon consisting of an iron framing c and a box or bunker 7 provided therein. v'lhe-lowerpartof thexbox 7 con-, tains an arrangement for easily emptying the contents, consistingof the flaps p and the chutes a. The framing 6 has at top a practically horizontal frame which consists of two transverse girders q and several longitudinalv girders arranged between them. Between the girders q is a screen extending over the whole area of the bunker and composed of a substantially horizontal piece '1" and an inclined piece 9, directly attachedthereto. The plane of the piece 1 whlch forms the continuation of the surface of the quenching bench Z, and the plane of the piece 1' meet in an obtuse angle along the line At the lower end of the screen plane r is attached a loading chute c, which serves to guide the coke into the wagon to. The screen bars/ s (see Fig. 2) which. are arranged at right angles to the longitudinal direction of the quenching bench, preferably taper in plan, the wider ends being turned towards the oven battery Z: and the narrower ends towards the chute o. In this manner the spaces between the bars gradually increase in width from their beginning at the edge a of the quenching bench to the discharge side of the car 0;; On the extended ends of the girders q are arranged bearings 13 for a shaft (Z, on which two winding drums z, are fixed. The shaft is driven through gearing n (Fig. 2) by a motor m, which may also drive the whole car on the rails 9. When the shaft is driven, the winding drums twind up two ropes b which are attached to a beam 0 actlng as a scraper or sweeper; thus the latter is pulled over the surface of the quenching bench Z and of the screen plane 1'. The apparatus is used by first bringing th car a along the rails g to that place where there is a heap h of quenched coke which is loaded; a wagon w for receiving the cokev driving theshaft d the scraper is pulled towards the wagon and moves the coke heap h as a whole in a coherent pile, first across the quenching bench Z and then over the first piece a" of the screen. The separation of the small coke, as the heap passes over the screen, is'facilitated by the form of the spaces between the bars, the width of 'which continually increases in the direction of movement of the coke, because the sticking of pieces of'coke between the bars and thereby the choking of the'screen vis prevented, since these pieces which partially project through the spaces are drawn forwards until they arrive at a sufliciently wide part of the space between the bars'to fallthrough; The coke having been thus freed from all the small particles, falls over the chute 1; directly into the wagon to and is ready for dispatch. The advantages of the invention are considerable and manifold. The troublesome and expensive work of loading quenched coke by manual labour is substituted by mechanical means which perform the operation in a very short time; with modern coke ovens of'considerable output, this is of im-' portance. 7 charged from a plurality OfCOkG ovens can be stored on the bench after quenching as required and removed and-loaded in any succession at will, quite independently from the operation of the single coke ovens. The several heaps of coke disapparatus itself is simple and can be made f without high costs, and, what is of considerable advantage, it can be applied to existing coke quenching benches of ordinary construction without difficultyand special provision. the simultaneous collection of the small coke, in such a manner that even this part of the coke can be supplied to anyparticular place of use without difi'iculty.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is I 1. An apparatus for quenching, loading and screening coke comprising in combination a substantially horizontal stationary bench for quenching and storing coke discharged from coke ovens, a car adapted to travel along the outside of said bench, a screen arranged on top of the car in the continuation of the quenching bench plane,
a chute attached tothe screen and'a mechanically driven scraper or sweeper op.- erated from the car and adapted to move a mass ofcoke in a coherent pile across the bench, over the screen and toward the chute attached. thereto.
2. An apparatus for quenching, loading and screening coke comprising in combination a substantially horizontal stationary bench for quenching and storing coke discharged from coke ovens, a car adapted to bench for quenching and storing coke discharged from coke ovens,a car adapted to travel along the outside of said bench, a screen arranged on top of the car and formed of two planes meeting in an obtuse angle along a line parallel to the loigitudinal direction of the quenching bench, the one screen plane forming a practically horizontal continuation of the quenching bench plane and the other screen plane adjoined to the first, forming a chute, and a mechanically driven scraper or sweeper operated from the car and adapted to move a mass of coke in a coherent pile across the bench, over the screen and toward the chute attached thereto.
4. An apparatus for quenching, loading and screening coke comprising in combination a substantially horizontal stationary bench for quenching and storing coke discharged from coke ovens, a car adapted to travel along the outside of said bench, a screen arranged in the top part of the car, a chute attached to the screen and a mechanically driven scraper or sweeper operated from the car and adapted to cause a quenched heap of coke to move as a coherent mass across the bench and thereafter to pass over the screen and the chute attached thereto.

An apparatus for quenching, loading and screening coke comprising in combination a substantially horizontal stationary bench for quenching and storing coke discharged from coke ovens, a car adapted to travel along the outside of said bench, a screen arranged on top of the car in the con tinuation of the quenching bench plane, a chute attached to the screen and a mechanically driven scraper or sweeper operated from the car and ac apted to cause a quenched heap of coke to move as a cohent mass across the bench, and thereafter to pass over the screen and the chute attached thereto.-

An apparatus for quenching, loading and screening coke comprising in combination a substantially horizontal stationary bench for quenching and storing coke discharged from coke ovens, a car adapted to travel along the outside of said bench and containing a bunker, a screen arranged in the top part of the car, said screen covering the aforesaid bunker, a chute attached to the screen and a mechanically driven scraper or sweeper operated from the car and adapted to cause a quenched heap of coke to move as coherent mass across the bench, and tl'iereaftcr to pass over the screen and the chute attached thereto.

An apparatus for quenching, loading and screening coke comprising in combination a substantially horizontal stationary bench for quenching and storing coke discharged from coke ovens, a car adapted to travel along the outside of said bench and containing a bunker, a screen arranged on top of the car in the continuation of the quenching bench plane, said screen covering the aforesaid bunker, a chute attached to the screen and a mechanically driven scraper or sweeper operated laterally from the car and adapted to cause a quenched heap of coke to move as a coherent mass across the bench, and thereafter to pass over the screen and the chute attached thereto.

An apparatus for quenching, loading and screening coke comprising in combination a substantially horizontal stationary bench for quenching and storing coke discharged from coke ovens, a car adapted to travel along the outside of said bench, a screen arranged on top of the car and formed of two planes meeting in an obtuse angle along a line parallel to the longitudinal direction of the quenching bench, the one screen plane forming a practically horizontal continuation of the quenching bench plane and the other screen plane adjoined to the first forming a chute, and a mechanically driven scraper or sweeper operated laterally from the car and adapted to cause a quenched heap of coke to move as a coherent mass across the bench, and thereafter to pass over the screen and the chute attached thereto.
9. An apparatus for quenching, loading and screening coke comprising in combination a substantially horizontal stationary bench for quenching and storing coke discharged from coke ovens, a car adapted to travel along the outside of said bench and containing a bunker, a screen arranged on top of the car over the bunker and formed of two planes meeting in an obtuse angle along a line parallel to the longitudinal direction of the quenching bench, the one screen plane forming a practically horizontal continuation of the quenching bench plane and the other screen plane adjoined to the first forming a chute, and a mechanically driven scraper or sweeper operated from the car and adapted to cause a quenched heap of coke to move as a coherent mass across the bench, and therafter to pass over the screen and the chute attached thereto.
