POULTRY CRATE.
To all wiwm zit-may. concern:
Be it known that I; E WARD Cox, a citizen of the United Statesresiding at Bloomfield, in the county of avis and State of El Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Poultry Crates, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in \c 16 poultry crates and more particularly to a device of this character which is collapsible.
.An important object is to provide a device of this character which when in the extended position is very rigid in structure and it which may be flatly folded for shipment when em A furth vide in a folding crate, members which hold portions of the crate when the crate is in extended position to prevent shifting thereof and which serve as a locking means for bold ing the crate in the collapsed position.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent throughout the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention and wherein like reference characters designate 80 like parts throughout, I Figure 1 is a plan view of a crate constructed in accordance with my invention showing the same in extended position and ready for use,
TjsEigure 2 is a side elevation thereof,
Figure 3 is an end elevation thereof,
Figure 4: is a section on the line' 14 of Figure 1,
Figure 5 is a sectional view through the crate when in the folded posit-ion, the section being taken on the line 5'5 of Figure 6, and Figure 6 is a plan view of the folded crate. Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a rigid e5 base which may be formed of any desirable material. This base has secured to its upper surface at the ends thereof transversely extending guide plates 11, each having formed therein a pair of slots 11* parallelao ing the base and having their adjacent ends separated by an integral portion 11 of the plate arranged centrally of the plate.
The numeral 12 indicates a reticulated top structure which is formed of spaced transuu versely extending cross members 13 and lonty. er object of the invent-ion is to progitudinally extending members 14. The
center of the top 12 ispreferably provided with a slidin door closure D. I
Certain of the transversely extending members 13 are continued at the sides of the top 12 and bent downwardly and rovided at their lower ends with loops 15 w ich piv-,
otally receive therein the upper strands 16 of side members S. These side members S have the lower strands 17 formed of relatively heavy material, and these strands 17 are of greater length than the side members and have their end portion 17 projecting into the grooves 11 of the guide plates 11, and slidable therein. The ends f the upper 72 strand member 16 of the side members are bent downwardly and secured to the lower strand 17 and combine therewith to form the support for a reticulated structure form- 7 ing the side member proper. The side memi5 .bers S are of less than one-half the width 01 the top member 12 so that the side members may fold beneath the top members without overlapping.
End members 19 are provided, pivotally 86 connected to the end transverse members 13 at opposite ends of the top 12 by means of loops 20 formed upon the upper ends, of the side strands 21 of the end members 19. The side strands 21 have secured thereto the horizontal strands 23 to which are secured the vertical strands 24, these vertical strands having their lower ends secured to the lower strand 22. To a transverse strand 13 adjacent each end of the top is pivotally eon so nected a gravity latch member 25. Each of these members embodies a cam section 26 adapted to be engaged by one of the transverse or horizontal members 23 of its adjacent end member 19 when the same is swung an inwardly and upwardly so as to force the latch to swing about its pivot and permit the strand 23 tobe received on a shoulder 27 of the latch, so that the end member 19 may be supported in elevated position. Extend we ing transversely of the base 10, approximately centrally thereof, is a member 28 provided upon its, ends with the resilient hook portions 29 with which the strands 17 are adapted to engage when the strands 1? we are moved outwardly in the slots 11, the hook portions 29 engaging the strands 1? to resiliently oppose their return movement to ward the inner ends of the slots.
When it is desired to fold the coop the end are
