career or CRAYTON ALVA LANG,
OF BLOOIVIFIELD, IOWA.
COLLAPSIIBLE COOP.
Application filed April 6,
To all 10710111 it may concern Be it known that I, ()nnrror: A. LANG, a resident of Bloomfield, in the county of Davis and State of Iowa, a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Collapsible Coops, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in collapsible coops particularly of the character or type used. in storing and shipping poultry or small animals.
One object of my invention is the provision of a' coop which can be easily collapsed and as readily opened for use and which will be light in weight but possessing the necessary strength and durability to withstand hard usage.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a folding or collapsible coop which will be of compact construction to occupy a small amount of space and thus be capable of shipment at a comparatively small price.
Another object of my invention is the provision of a collapsible coop which will be of extremelysimple construction to assure its cost at a minimum and which in every particular will prove useful, eflicient and practical.
With these objects in view my invention consists of a folding or collapsible coop embodying novel features of construction, arrangement and combination of parts for service, as described, claimed and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a collapsible coop constructed in ac cordance with and embodying my improvement, shown in open position.
Fig. 2 represents a central longitudinal sectional view of the complete coop.
Fig. 3 represents an end elevation of the coop, showing in dotted lines the position the top member and side members occupy when partially collapsed.
Fig. lrepresents a top plan view of the coop, and
Fig. 5 represents an end view showing the coop in folded or collapsed position.
Referring by numeral to the drawing in which similar numerals of reference are employed to denote the same parts in all the views: I
The numeral 1 designates the base or struction 1922. Serial No. 550,062.
floor of the coop, of rectangular shape and of the proper and desired dimensions, and at each end of which is secured the angle shape strips or plates 2, whose horizontal wall is secured by suitable fastenings 3 to the base and whose vertical wall is of suflicient height to form a partial closure for the members of the coop when collapsed, and which further is provided with openings l, which form bearings for the extended ends 5, of the lower rods of the side members 6, of the coop.
From this construction it will be ob served that the end plates form the mounting or connecting structure for the coop as well as the means for protecting the coop when collapsed, as most clearly shown in Fig. 5, and the side member 6, are of rectangular form and have their central or intermediate rod or connection 7, formed with extensions 8, which bear in eyes 9, on the links 10, whose upper ends are formed with eyes 11, which bear upon the extended ends 12 on the side rods 13,01? the top member 14, which construction provides two side members which by reason of the pivoted links 10, will cause the top and side members to be easily collapsed as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 8, while to the end rods 15, of the top member are connected the eyes 16, at the upper ends of the end members 17, which construction permits said members to swing upward, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, this conpermitting collapsing or folding of the top, side and end members constituting the coop.
Upon the base of the coop is secured the fiat strip or plate 18, whose ends are bent over at 19, to engage the lower rods 20, of the side members and said plate is formed with bearings 21, for the lower rod 22, of the dividing member 23, which is provided with a pair of eyes 24, adapted to be engaged When in closed position by the latches 25, on the sliding door 26, to lock the parts in closed position, and said dividing member 23 is provided upon its upper rod with the hooks or latches 27, which engage the top member to lock the partition in open position, thus the latches operate to lock the parts of the coop when in closed or open position.
The top of the coop is provided with an opening 28, at one side of which is disposed the guide rods 29, which receive the loops 30, on the pair of sliding doors 26, which can be moved to either side to permit access to either of the compartments provided by the central or division member,- and each door is locked by the pivoted individual latch 32 and 32 that engage the cross bars 26 of the respective doors, as most clearly shown in Fig. 2, thus providing means for locking either or both doors and permitting access to either compartment of the coop.
The doors 26 are made up of longitudinal rods and cross bars, the outer bars having the loops 30 while the adjacent bars 26 are adapted to be engaged by the hooks 32 and 32 that are hinged on central main bar 31 of the top of the coop and on being raised will release the door bars 26.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings it willbe instantly apparent that I provide a folding or collapsible coop which can be instantly opened and locked in position for use, or as readily folded or collapsed and locked in such position and that the coop will possess the necessary strength while being comparatively light in weight to save shipping charges and withstand hard usage, and that the peculiar tapered shape from bottom to top will in a manner protect the coop and permit easy nesting when being shipped or stored, and that generally in every important particular the coop will commend itself as meeting all requirements and providing a desirable, practical and eflicient article of this character.
I claim:
1. A collapsible coop, consisting of a base, side members of a single open work frame pivoted to the base, a top member, links connecting the top member with the side members, end members hinged to the top member, and bearings for the pivots of the side members and adapted to limit the movement of the end members.
2. A collapsible coop, consisting of a base, strips across the ends of the base, side members of a single frame and pivoted at their lower ends in the strips, a top member, links connecting the top and side, members, and end members pivoted to the top member and limited in their outer movement by said strips.
3. A collapsible coop, consisting of a floor or base, strips of angular shape and having one side secured to the base and the other vor base, angular strips secured to side adapted to operate as a stop and pivot bearing, side members pivoted in said strips, a top member linked to the side members and adapted to told on them, and end members hinged to the top and adapted to fold under the same and be limited in their outer movement by the strips.
4:. A collapsible coop, consisting of a floor each end of the base and extending across the same, an intermediate strip having up-turned ends and secured to the base, side members pivoted in the end strips, a top member linked to the side members, end members adapted to fold beneath the top member, and be stopped by the angular strips, a partition member pivoted in the intermediate strip and adapted to prevent the collapse or the side members, and latches for the partition member.
5. A collapsible coop, consisting of a floor or base, angle shape strips secured to said base near each end, a central or intermediate strip secured to said base, a central or intermediate member having its lower ends pivoted in said intermediate strip, side members pivoted at their lower portion to said intermediate and angle shape strip, means limiting the outward movement of the end and side members, a top member connected to the upper portion of said side members, and end members pivoted at their upper ends to said top member, said top member being formed with an opening extending across each compartment of the coop, doors slidingly mounted within said opening, latches for holding said doors individually, and means for securing all members of the coop in closed and in open position.
6. A collapsible coop, consisting of a base, angle strips at the end of the base, an intermediate strip, side members hinged in the strips, a top member having openings, links connecting the corners of the top member with the ends of the side members at the middle end members hinged at their upper ends to the top members, a partition member pivoted to the intermediate strip, sliding doors for the opening in the top and at each side of the partition, a latch for each door, and a finger on one of the doors and adapted to engage the partition.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.
