application filed January 31, 1922. Serial in. 533,075.
I To all whom it may citizen of the 'United States, -residin Be it known that I, EDWIN a Norfolk, in the county of Nor-folkand tate of Virginia, have invented'certain new. and
useful Improvements in Headlight Screens, 7
of which thefollowing is a specification; Y My invention relatesto head light screens. 'The object of the invention is to provide a simple attachment for automobile head.
lamps so arranged as to avoid blinding of automobile drivers when approaching eac other, at the same time providing suflicient .up portions or bearings. .;j'
're 1 is a front view of my screen or shiel showing both the fixed and movableslats or light projecting strips.
Figure 2 is a front view of the inner ring which is provided with movable slats.
i Figure 3 is a side elevation of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is afragmentary'plan of the inner ring showing bent up portions of the inside-periphery thereof.
Figure 5 is a similar view of the ring with slits therein before". being bent upwards as in Figure'4.
Figure 6 1s a side view of one of the mov.-
able slats.
Figure 7 is a fragmentary plan of the" same at. one end.
Figure 8 is a perspective view of one end of the movable slats.
Figure 8A is a perspective view of a portion of the inner ring showing the turned Figure 9 isa crosssecti'onal elevation. of the upperportion of my-complete' device.
Figure 10 is a perspective fragmentary view of a'portion of the outer. screen member 7 shown in and one end of a single light deflecting fixed slat.
"Figure 11 is a fragmentary view ofthe upper part of the screen showing a modification for operating the movable slats. Figure 12 is a front view of the same.
' In the drawings like reference numerals indicate similar parts in all the several views:
Referring to Figure 9, 1 is the ordinary head lamp body and 2 is the beaded flange h by which the glass 3 is held in place and over wh ch my improved screen'is placed.
My invent-ion consists of the stamped metal ring or dished'member 4 and is offset from the flange'5 in such a manner as to.
leave a space between the in'ner front surface and the-flan e for the reception of the hereinafter descri bed inner ring.
The outer surface of the screen ring 4 is provided with slats or light deflectors 6 formed at the same time as the ring 4 itself,
when stamped from a single iece of metal, and are joined or formed to t e ring by the curved ends 7, Fi re 10.
As shown, the. s atsor deflectors have a fixed angle for throwing the li ht'beams at 'a certain declination and are isposed at a certain distance apart thus making the spaces 8 between them, as in Figure 1..
9 is a flat metal ring and is laced withinthe screen ring 4 usually mi way between the outer flat portion or bulge of the ring and the glass or lens 3; as shown in Figure 1!. v The inner periphery of the rin 15 provided' with tangential slits 10 and diametrical slits 11, Figure 5, which form tongues or lugs when bentupwards so as to form bearings 12 for the movable slat pins 14, as shown in Figures 8A and 9.
InFigure 2, the lungs 13 have the same functions as those at 12 and the former may be soldered to the ring and both arranged in staggered alignment as shown in Figure 2. j
15 are the movable slats or light deflectors and are located between thefixed slats 6 and consequentl-liy disposed in the spaces 8, as
igure 1.
I I At each end of the slats a slit is made an a corner turned down forming a notch 16 Figure 7, and the tongue formed is bent:
over and holds the pin 14, Figurefi, as at 17 which produces the depending end 18 and consequently the ,set' back corner 19, as shown. Q
The object/of the parts 18 and 19 are for engaging the inner edge of the inner ring 9 and thereby prevent rattling in any position of themovable slats.
The slats are provided with a transverse slot, F iguresiland l2 through'which passes the rod 21by which they are operated.-
22 are'washers or projectionsron the rod 21"and are placed above and below each of the movable slats.15 so that when the rod is raised or lowered they may be made to assume different angles, as shown.
The slots 20 permit the rod to pass in-v wards so as to kee the washers 22 in striking alignment wit the slats regardless of their angle, as indicated in Figure 9.
Therod 21 has a bracket 23 for the guidance of its lowerend, Figure 3,'also an ofiset 24 at its upper end for attachment to the cam disc 25 pivoted at 26 on the ring ,4 and has a handle 27 by which the cam is operated and consequently'the raising and lowering of the slats is effected.
In Figures 11 and 121 show amodified form for locking the slat operating rod 21. In this view I provide a bend 28'at right angles to the red at its upper portion which is locked in the plate 30 supported by the bracket 29.
shaped opening similar to a bayonet joint or lowest position correspondin to a The plate is provided with horizontal slots 31 and vertical slots 32 forming an L so that the rod maybe locked at its hi hest orizo'ntal or angular position of t e slots, respectively.v
' The slats 15 are capable of assuming any angle when the rod 21 is operated and working in conjunction with the fixed slats 6,
makes it possible to increase or decrease the amount of lightfrom the lamp. The main ring/1 is stamped out from a single piece of metal by means ofsuitable dies and is therefore cheap to eproduce.
The movable slats-are joined to the ring 9 in such a manner as will not readily get outof order and the whole provides an 'eflicient screen which may be sold at a reasona- -ble price.
I claim: A. head light screen, and in'combination with a ring, of fixed downwardly projecting slats formed therewith, an inner ring in the rear of the first namedringhaving slit portions in its eripher-y for bending into lugs or ears, '0 movable slats across the diameter of the inner. ring having pins upon the ends thereof, and bearing means for the pins on the slats formed by opening said slits, and cam locking and unlocking means for operating said movable slats.
. In testimony whereof I have hereunto afwitnesses.
fixed my signature in the presence of two a EDWIN LODGE.
Witnesses: I
