AUTO HEADLIGHT-DEFLECTOR DEVICE.
Application filed February 16, 1924. Serial No. 693,278.
To all 107mm it'may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. HART- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Auto Headliglitz-Deflector Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an automobile headlight deflector device, and the object of the invention is the improvement of a de flector device, which will give a great amount of light on the road without producing a glare that is confusing to the chauifeur of an approaching motor vehicle.
Another object of the invention is the provision of simple and eliicient means for indicating to an approaching chauffeur in an on-coming motor vehicle the exact position on a road of a motor vehicle provided with my invention.
This invention is an improvement along the lines of the invention disclosed in my copending application, Serial Number 683,361, filed December 29, 1923.
lVith theseand other objects in view, my
invention comprises certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing the same in an ordinary headlight.
Figure 2 is a View, in front elevation, of a deflector device constructed in accordance with the present invention, while Figure 3 is a side view of the same.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary, perspective view of the ring-like body of the device.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the ease of a lamp in which is positioned by deflector device 2. The de flector device is placed behind the lens 3 as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The deflector device 2 comprises a conical-like body 4i which is provided with an outwardly-extending flat flange 5, formed integral with the outer edge of said body 4.
I position horizontal blades 6 and 7 across the lower part of the body, having the prongs or extensions 8 extending through the body 4 for securing the blades fixedly in position. These blades 6 and 7 slant downwardly from their rear to their front edge, whereby rays from the lamp are thrown downwardly upon the road.
In the center of the body, and arranged in a vertical position, is a slatted device which 1s formed or stamped from a single piece of metal and which comprises a pair of verti cal side blades 9, 9, and connected to these blades are webs 10 from which extend slats 11. These slats 11 project outwardly and downwardly for throwing the rays of the lamp downwardly upon the road. The blades 9 extend outwardly from their rear edge to their front edge, and the same is true with reference to the vertical blades 12, whereby the light rays are spread over the roadway, giving a large area of illumination without any glare occurring on the chauffeur of an approaching motor vehicle. It will, therefore, be seen that I have provided, in a deflector device, means for deflecting the rays downwardly upon the center of the roadway as well as spreading the rays laterally over a broad area of the same.
The blades 9 and 12 are provided with the prongs or extensions 8 the same as blades 6 and 7 for holding the blades in position upon the finished device.
It is desired to provide means upon the lamps, whereby the chaufieur in an approaching motor vehicle can tell at once the exact position of the approaching automobile and this is accomplished by providing a colored transparent strip 13 which is preferably provided in its center, with a starlike opening 14. I use the term strip in a broad sense, meaning a piece or body of material which can be of any color. It is to be understood that I preferably place a red strip on the left-hand lamp, as this lamp will be close to the approaching, or passing automobile, and on the right-hand lamp I place a green colored piece or strip so that the approaching chauffeur can readily calculate the position of the ear approaching him. Integral prongs 15 extend preferably outwardly from the flange 5 and by bending over these prongs, against the colored transparent means 13 the same can be securely held in position upon the body of the device. These clips 15 constitute clamping fastening means for holding the indicating means upon the body.
I have found from practical experience trated thesame in the accompanying: draw ings, certain minor changes or alterations may appear to one skilled in the art to which this invent1onrelates,; during the extensive 'manufacture ofthe same and I, therefore reservethe right to make such alterations or changes as shall fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
That I claim is:
l.-1n a headlight deflector construction, a
ring-likeibody, horizontal deflecting strips-1 extending acrosssaid body in spaced relation to the'lower point thereof and disposed forwardly at a downward incline, vertically disposed deflecting strips extending. up-
Wardly from the upper one of said horizontal strips and having their upper ends anchored to said body, the last-mentioned horizontal stripbeing; positioned below the cen-- ter of the space enclosed by the ring like body, and horizontal deflector strips extending between-certain of said vertical strips and disposed in spaced relation to each other from a point adjacent the upper point of said bod-y to a -point adjacent the upper horizontal strip.
2. In a headlight deflector construction, a
ring-like body, horizontal deflecting strips extending across the lower portion of said body and extendingforwardly at a down ward incline, deflecting. means positioned above the upper one of said horizontal strips, said deflecting means being formed of a single piece of material and having verticall-y disposed side strips diverging forwardly and provided with attaching -1neans at their ends for engagement with the upper horizontal strip and body ring cross strips having upper portions attached to the side strips and lower portions bent to extend forwa-rdly at a downward incline and other vertical deflector means positioned at oppo site sides of said deflecting. meansand disposed parallel to the side strips thereof for directing light towards the sides of a road.
In testimony whereof I hereunto a'liix my signature.
r CHARLES A; H-ARTMANN.
