Description

B. W. MYER AND J. BROWN.
CALF WEANER. APPLICATION man SEPT-16,1921.
1 428394. I Patentedsept. 12,1922.
jwmntots abhor mug Patented Sept. 12, 1922,
raser BERT W. MYER- AND JOHN BROWN, OF ELKHABT, KANSAS.
CALF WEANER.
Application filed September 16, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BERT W. MYER and JOHN BROWN, citizens of the United States, residing at Elkhart, in the county of Morton and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Calf Weaners, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to calf weaners, the object being to provide a structure that is both simple and inexpensive, at the same time is highly effective, and will not inflict serious pain or injury to either the cow or calf.
The preferred form of structure is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, where1n:
Figure 1 is a face view in front elevation of the structure,
Figure 2 is an edge View.
In the embodiment disclosed, a mounting member in the form of a yoke is employed, preferably formed of wire, and comprising a cross bar 3, side arms 4: and inturned clamps 5 carried by the cross arms and terminating in a nostril-engaging enlargement 6. A shield plate 7 is pivoted between its ends on the cross bar 3 of the yoke, said plate having offset ears 9 through which the said cross bar 3 passes. The plate is slightly narrower than the distance between the side arms 4, and at its inner or upper end is provided with offset lugs 10 that are adapted to abut against the side arms 4 and thus limit the swinging movement of the plate in one direction. The opposite end margin of the plate is upset slightly as shown at 11, and said end portion is furthermore provided with upstanding spurs 12 preferably formed by upsetting portions of the plate. lt will also be noted that the front corners of said plate are preferably rounded as illustrated at 13.
Obviously this structure is inexpensive and may be readily applied as it is only necessary to engage the cartilage of the calfs nose between the abutments 6 where they will be retained by the yielding or spring action of the yoke. The upper portion of the plate is slotted as shown at 14, thereby permitting the free passage of air Serial No. 501,161.
and materially lightening the structure. The upset front margin insures that the device will readily slide over the grass when the calf is grazing. The barbs or spurs 12 will irritate the mother, but do not interfere with the calfs grazing, the plate readily turning to accommodate itself to the different positions of the animals nose.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape. proportion and minor details of construetion, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A calf weaner comprising a mounting yoke having means for engagement with the calfs nose, a shield plate pivoted near its middle on the cross bar of the yoke, and a stop carried by the plate and abutting against the side arm of the yoke to limit the swinging movement of the plate.
2. A calf weaner comprising a mounting yoke consisting of a cross bar, side arms and inturned nostril-engaging clamps, and a shield plate journal ed between its ends on the cross bar and having outstanding lugs at one end that abut against the side arms to limit the swinging movement of the plate, the other end margin of the plate being olfset and havingspurs.
3. A. calf weanor comprising a yoke havin means for engagement with a calfs nose, and a shield plate pivoted near its middle on said yoke and having offset ears to engage the yoke and limit swinging movement in one direction, said plate having its upper portion slotted and outturned spurs on its lower portion. I
In testimony whereof, we dlfili our signatures in the presence of a witness.
BERT W. MYER. JOHN BROWN. Witness:
