herein disclosed as applied to the Underwood machine, which is especially adapted to be utilized in making single-line entries upon work-sheets,- such. as bill-heads, in which there is only one entry for every day in the week, or month, etc. In machines used for such work, and for other purposes, the rapid insertion of a bill is greatly facilitated by having it inserted from the front, and, when so inserted, held in position by a .clip or clips. According to the present invention, the clip or clips used for this or other purposes may be in the form of rigid or comparatively stifi' members overlying the table. The table is adapted to be depressed to carry it away from the clip, with the result that the work-sheet may be slippedbeneath the clip, and held in position thereby at the upspringing of the table when pressure upon it is released.

The platen 10 is provided with an axle 11, by which it is journaled in the end- plates 12 and 13, and adapted to be revolved by the usual line-space wheel 14.

as adapted to be used in a system of bookkeeping in which the line-record-sheet 15 is passed down over the rear paper-table 16, and up in front of the platen, past the feedrolls 17, andguided tothe wing-scales 18, so that it may fall over the top of the platen.
In inserting the record-sheet 15, it may be gaged against the usual side-gage 19 upon the paper-table 16. The feed-rolls 17 are soarranged that they run only upon the margins of the record-sheet 15, in the form of the machine herein illustrated, thus permitting a narrow statement-sheet 20 to be inserted from the front, behind the wingscales 18, with the result that it will curve beneath the platen guided by the usual paper-apron, not shown.
In order to align the statement-sheet 20 and the carbon-sheet 21, which may be inserted therewith, there is provided a papertable 22, above the platen and having an upturned edge 23, adapted to serve as a sidegage for the statement-sheet 20. The statement-sheet is adapted to be caught by 1ts leading end under tin adjustable clip 24.
To permit this to be done, according to the present invention, the clip is rigidly held upon the plate or bracket 25, which 18 fastened inany suitable manner upon the crossbar 26, which in turn is fast upon brackets 27 and 28, wcured upon the end- plates 12 and 13. Thebracket 25 supports the table 22 in a yielding manner, because the springs 29, interposed between the table 22 and the bracket 25, normally press the table forward bracket 25.
To thus draw down the clip 24, there is upon each bolt a thumb-nut 35, which is adapted to be screwed down uponthe clip 24, and clamp it against its collar 32. The bolt 33, on which the thumb-nuts 35 are threaded, are provided with flat sldes 36, which are adapted to fit the sides of the slots 37 in which the bolts 33 are movable up and down to adjust the position of the clip 24 away from the printing point on a level with the wing-scales 18. To permit the adjustment of the clip 24 in this manner, the table 22 is provided with corresponding slots 38 through which the bolts 33 pass, but the slots 38 are wide enough to allow the table 22 to slide up and down along the sides of the collars 32, there being preferably a separate bolt and collar for each end of the clip 24 when it is of the form, herein illustrated, i. e., when it extends substantially across the top of the table 22. The heads of the screws 30 rest in depressions 39, deep enough to permit the surface of the table toremain clear of the heads when it is depressed to allow the statement-sheet to be slid under the clip 24. The slots 37 and 38 are made long enough to allow as many lines of the statement-sheet to be used as will ever be desired, and to enable the slots to be as long as possible with a minimum length of table 22, the screws 30 are set to one side of the slots. The lower end of the table 22 may extend near enough to the platen to enable a comparatively short space to intervene between the clip 24 and the writing line at the wing-scales 18.
After one sheet has been slipped under the clip 24 and typed, it is removed by depressing the table 22, and another sheet is inserted and typed; The smooth faces of the collars 32 form an end gage for the inserted sheet.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others. Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen and a papertable upon which a sheet is adapted to be adjusted, of a clip overhanging said table, and a spring device normally lifting said table against said clip, but adapted to permit the table to be depressed from the clip to enable the work-sheet to be adjusted beneath the clip and to be seized against the clip by the upsp-ringing of the table.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen and a papertable upon which a sheet is adapted to be adjusted, of a clip overhanging said table, a fixed mounting for the clip, a spring between the table and the fixed mounting normally holding the table against the clip, but adapted to be depressed to permit the table to drop from the clip to enable the worksheet to be slipped under the clip to be seized by the upspringing Of'tllG table, and means for adjusting the position of the clip.
3. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen and a papertable upon which a sheet is adapted to be adjusted, of clipping means adjustab e at each end of the table and'overhanging the table, a gaging device associated with the clipping means to gage the leading end of the work-sheet, and a spring device normally lifting said table against said clipping means, but adapted to permit the table to be depressed from the clipping means to enable the work-sheet to be; adjusted beneath the clipping means and to be seized against it by the uprising of the table.
4. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen and a papertable upon which a sheet is adapted to be adjusted, of devices for gaging a work-sheet upon said table, a clip fast to one of said .devices and overhanging the table, and
spring means normally lifting said table against said clip, but adapted to permit the table to be depressed from the clip to enable the work-sheet to be adjusted beneath the clip and to be seized against the clip by the uprising of the table.
5. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen and a papertable upon which a sheet is adapted to be adjusted, of a bracket upon which said table is yieldingly mounted, and a clip fast to the bracket and overlying said table and adapted to receive the thrust of the table.
6. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen and a papertable upon which a sheet is adapted to be adjusted, of a bracket upon which said table is yieldingly mounted, means for guiding said table as it moves up and down, and an adjustable clip fast upon the bracket and overlying the table and adapted to receive the thrust of the table.
7. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen and a papertable upon which a sheet is adapted to be adjusted, said table having an opening therethrough, of a bracket upon which said table is yieldingly mounted to thrust upward, a clip overlying the table, and a member for supporting the clip adjustably mounted on the bracket and extending through said opening in the table to hold said clip against the thrust of the table and clamp the worksheet therebetween.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen and a papertable upon which a sheet is adapted to be adjusted, of a bracket carrying the table, guide-members upon the bracket and pass ing through the table, springs coiled around said members and holding the table upward, and a clip adjustably fast to the bracket and overlying the table to hold work-sheets in position when seized between the clip and table.
9. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble platen and a papertable upon which a sheet is adapted to be adj sted, of a bracket ry g the ta le,
said bracket having a longitudinal slot, guide-members upon the bracket and passing through the table, springs coiled around said members and holding the table upward, a clip overlyingisaid table, said table having a longitudinal slot therein, and a supporting member for said clip movable in said slots to enable said clip to be adjustably positioned on said table, said member being adapted to hold said clip to receive the thrust of said table.
10. In a typewriting machine, the comb-ination with arevoluble platen and a paper-table upon which a sheet is adapted to be adjusted, of a clip device extending across said table, a bracket on which the table is ieldingly mounted to bear up against t e clip device, and an adjustable. mounting at each end of the clip device adapted to hold it to the bracket.
11. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revoluble' platen and a paper-table upon which a sheet is adapted to be adjusted, of a clip device extending across said table, a bracket, guide-members on said bracket holding said table centered, springs encircling said members to hold the table against the clip device, and a support.

16. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a revo uble platen and a paper-table upon which sheets are adapted to be adjusted, of a clip device extending across said table, a bracket on which the table is yieldingly mounted to bear against the clip device, and supports for said clip device mounted on said bracket and extending through said table, said table being adapted to be moved awa from said clip device to allow insertion 0 said sheets, said supports servin as end gages for the adjustment of sai sheets.
