Application filed February This invention relates to feed'roll-releasing mechanism in typewriting machines, and is particularly useful'in facilitating placing and fixing of bills in typing posi .ion, especially where a record-sheet is employed upon which to make carbon copies or entries of successive bills.
According to the invention, from the front of the platen and from any desired position along the platen, the operator may release the feed-rolls that run on the under side of the platen, and may also make said releasing operation constitute a part of the sheetcollating operation. The device includes a sheet-aligning bar or collating table extending along the platen, and hinged so as to be swung forwardly to cast off the feedrolls, and may be locked forward. Said aligning bar or collating table may be held in an intermediate position during the insertion of the work-sheet.
The work-sheet may be positioned for typing by means of the upper edge of the aligning 031.,RSS1S1Z8d by the fingers of the typist, or a ledge at the upper edge of said bar. To accommodate various lengths of bills, the ledge may be adjustably mounted on the bar, to act as a gage.
The aligning bar may be readily adjustable lengthwise of the platen.

Front feed-rolls 15 are on a shaft 17 seated on arms 18 of bell-crank levers pivotally mounted on a shaft 19. Rear feedrolls 16 are on a shaft 20 seated on arms21 of bell-crank levers also pivetally mounted on shaft 19. The bell-crank levers which comprise the arms 18 have other arms 22 which depend to the rear of a shaft 2%,. and the bell-crank levers which comprise the arms 21 have other arms 23 which depend to the front of the shaft 2 1. Leaf-springs 25 hearing against arms 18 and 21 tend to rock the arms upwardly to throw the feedrolls 15 and 16 against the platen 10, and, therefore, tend to press the arms 22 anc 28 against the shaft 2 1. Shaft 2 1 has flats 26 cut thereon where the arms 22 and 23 engage the same. When the feed-rolls l5 and 16 are in effective position, the arms 22 and 23 stand slightly free of the flats 26, as shown in Figure 1. lVhcn, however, the shaft 2% is rotated, the arms 22 and 23 are forced apart to draw down the feed'rolls 15 and 16, as shown in Figure 2. The shaft 2 1 is journaled in the hanger-plates 31 supported from shaft 19. The feed-roll mecha nism, just described, is that found on the standard Underwood typewriting machine. The feed-rolls 15 and 16'may be thrown off the platen 10 by means of a release-control-device 32 besides the usual release-control lever-key 33 through the following interconnecting parts. Fast to the shaft 24 is an arm 34.- which is connected at one end to a link 85, which is connected to a cranklever 36 having a rigid stub-shaft 37, mounted between the right-hand side plate 12 of the platen-frame and a side bracket 38 and mounted on the outer end of the stub-shaft 37 is the lever-key 33 as shown in Figure 3. The release controhdevice 32 may comprise the rod 38 extending over the platen 10 and running lengthwise thereof. Rod 38 is fastened at each end to supporting arms 39, the free ends of which are pivoted at 39 on downwardly-extcnding members 10 mounted on and extending from the front topportion of the platen-frame side pieces 12. An aligning bar 11 which is in effect a collating table also serves as a handle for the control-device 32 and may be mounted to move with the rod 38 by means of widely spacedbrachet arms 42 fastened to :the bar 1 41 and slidingly embracing the rod 38.

Pivots 39 are preferably arranged in alignment with the position of the printing line on platen 10, so that the distance from the printing line to the, upper edge of the bar ll is always the same, thus avoiding-any possibility of shifting the printing line on the bill-sheet 46 with respect to the position of the printing line on platen 10 when swinging the bill-sheet 46 with thebar ll from the position shown in Figure 2 to that shown in Figure 1. y
The above description explains the operation of a typewriting machine embodying the invention for typing a relatively complex work-piece. It is obvious that simple and ordinary forms may be typed with equal advantage by the use of the same.
The bill-sheet'may be held, or, in other words, may be prevented from unnecessarily falling forward, by a finger 60, which may be supported on the usual front bar (not shown) of the carriage-frame. The linger may be so supported that it may be conveniently swung out of the way while in serting a fresh bill.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others Having thus described my invention, I claim: l y

In a tvpewriting machine, a platen-carriage, a platen mounted for case-shifting thereon, a releasable workpiece-feeding mechanism co-operating with the platen, and control means for said mechanism shittable with the platen, comprising a rod operatively connected to said mechanism, the rod be ing supported on the carriage and extend ing lengthwise of the platen, and a bar adjustably mounted along the rod for actuating the latter.
In a typewriting machine, platencarriage, a platen, means for shifting the platen between case-positions on the car-- riage, a releasable workpiece-feeding mechanism co-operating with the platen, control means shittable with the platen and extending lengthwise thereof, said control means including a rod, a bar slidably mounted for movement on the rod to release said mechanism during the removing or inserting move ment of a work-piece in the machine, and a gage-plate adjustably secured to the bar for aligning work-pieces of various lengths in typing position.
3. In a typewriting machine, a platen-carriage, a platen, feed-rolls to co-operate with the platen, and a device pivotally mounted on the carriage lengthwise of the platen, comprising control means for releasing the feed-rolls and-gaging means for positioning a work-piece for typing, said device being arranged to pivot about points aligned with the printing line of the platen, so that the distance between said gaging means and the printing line is always the same as the device is moved with the work-piece.
4. In a typewriting machine, a platen-carriage, a platen, feed-rolls to co-operatewith the platen, and a device comprising a rod movably mounted on the carriage lengthwise of the platen, a bar supported on the rod for movement therewith to release the feed-rolls, and an aligning edge on the bar to position, for typlng, a work-sheet being inserted in the machine, said device when actuated being pivoted to swing about the printing line on the platen, so that the distancebetween said aligning edge and the printing line is always the same as the device is moved with the work-sheet.
5. In a typewriting machine, a platen-can riage, a platen, teed-rolls to oo-operate with the platen, and a device comprising a rod movably mounted on the carriage lengthwise of the platen, a bar supported on the rod for movement therewith to release the teed-rolls, and a gage-plate adjustably secured to the bar for aligning work-sheets of various lengths in typing position, said device when actuated being pivoted to swing about the printing line on the platen, so, that the distance between said gage-plate and said printing line is always the sameas the device is moved with thework-sheets.
6.-In a typewriting machine, a' platencarriage, a platen, teed-rolls to cooperate with the platen, and a device to be actuated by the hand of the operator, comprising a rod swingably supported on the carriage lengthwise of the platen, and a collating table mounted on the rod and operable to swing said rod whereby to release the feedrolls, said table having an aligning edge thereon for gaging a work-sheet to position for typing.
7. Ina typewriting machine, a platen-carriage, a platen, feed-rolls to co-operate with the platen, a device to be actuated by the hand of the operator, comprising a rod swingably supported on the carriage, a collating ta-ble mounted on the rod and operable to swing said rod whereby to release the feed-rolls, and a gage-plate adjustably secured to the bar for aligning work-sheets of various lengths in typing position, said gage-plate including a ledge against which the work-sheets are positioned for gaging.
8. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, oi means to feed a worksheet around said platen, and collating table operatively connected to means and movable to release or restore the same.
9. In a typewriting machine, a platen, a releasable pressure-device tor holding a work-piece against the platen, and a workcollating table connected to said pressure device and directly movable to release or re store the same.
