Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN MEEKER, or BRIDGEPORT, ooNNEoTIoUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN DIES FOR FORMING CARRIAGE-CLIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,804, dated September 16, 1873; application filed J une 28, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN MEEKER, of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Con necticut, have invented an Improved Die for Forming Uarriage-Glips, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in constructing a die in which I can strike up to a desired form wrought-iron when at a welding-heat, the object being to expedite the manufacture and give an equal and symmetrical form.
Figure l is a longitudinal section, Fig. 2 is a top view, Fig. 3 an end view, Fig. 4 side view of clip; Figs. 5 and 6, top and end views of same.
A is the body of the die, in which is Worked the contour of clip. B is the cap; 0, the reenforce attached to the cap. Fig. 4 shows the clip after it is struck up. The opening 2, formed by the re-enforce (J, sets over the crossbar that connects the springs on the top. The grooves 3 3 are for the tie of clip-bolts to fit in, and are deep enough for the tie to be even with 4 4 on top. These depressions or grooves 3 3 are formed by the re-enforces 5 5 in the die. The iron, as. it is pressed or forced into the mold, fits down on each side of it, and gives the form shown in drawing of finished clip.
In striking up a clip of wrought-iron, the bar is bent to correspond somewhat with the shape of die; then heated to a welding-heat, set in the die, and the cap B forced down onto to it by a press or drop. I 0
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is f The re-enforces 5 5 in the die, by which the grooves 3 3 are formed in carriage-clips, as described and set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification before two subscribing witnesses. k
EDWIN MEEKER.
