BLANK FOR FORMING THRASHING-MACHINLCYLINDER TEETH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,135, dated November 18, 1884.
To ail whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN CHRISTIAN, of
San Jose, conntyof Santa Clara, and State of California, have invented an Improvement in Blanks for Forming Thrashing-Machine-Cylinder Teeth; and I hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to certain improve- IO ments in the construction of teeth for thrashing-machine cylinders; and it consists, mainly, in the formation of the blanks for the steel fronts, which are to be welded to iron teeth to increase their durability, and in a means I for retaining the rough blanks from which the tooth and front are formed in contact until they are welded securely by a drop-hammer and dies.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation. of my invention, Figure 1 is a View of the rough strip of steel with lug or projection shaped and ready to be attached to the tooth-blank. Fig. 2 is a view showing the blanks in position to be welded and shaped. Fig. 3 is aview of the completed tooth. 1
In the constructionof iron teeth for the cylinders of thrashing-machines it has been found desirable and necessary tomake the fronts of 0 the teeth of steel, so as to reduce the wear and render the teeth more durable.
My invention relates to the formation of the blanks A of steel, which are to be applied to the tooth-blanks, so that the two may be welded and struck into form by one blowof the die. These steel blanks A are made by means of adie having one end much shallower than the other andhaving ahole or depression in it. The pieces of steel, out to the proper length and heated, are laid in this die, and a single blow of the hammer shapes them, drawing one end to a thin edge, and at the same heated,the pin is readily forced in the soft Application filed January 14, 1884. It'will be seen that the teeth may be hardened or tempered at the same heat.
Having thus described my invention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters 6 Patent, is-
1. The steel blank A, to be applied to the front of athrashing-cylinder tooth, said blank having one enddrawn thinner than the other, and provided with a pin or lug by which to 7( secure it to the tooth-body, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The steel blank A, to be applied to the front of a thrashing-cylinder tooth, said blank being thinner at one end than the other, and 7 provided with a lug or pin upon one end, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
