CHARLES R. BIRDSEY, 0F HINSDALE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ITNITED STATES GYTSUM'COMIIANY, 0F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF'ILLINOIS.
PLASTER BOARD.
Original application filed January 2, 1920, Serial No. 348,940.
Serial No. 434,649.
, January 3, 1921.
To all whomz't may concern Beit known that ICHA1,iLEs R. BIRDsEfY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hinsdale, in the county of Du Page and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plaster Board (Case B-l), of :which the followmg 1s a description.
My invention belongs to that general class of devices known as plaster boardior the like, and relates particularly to an improved board which willbe simple convenient, substantial, durable, satisfactory and elicient, and .which may be economlcally and accurately manufactured-- The invention relates particularly to a type of board in -which the plaster, plaster Paris or plastic material body is substantially enclosed on one or both opposite edges, `as well as the face sides, and which edges may be perfectly formed to conform to a definite` specification as to size or angle. Many other cb-v jects and advantages of the construction herein shown and described will lbe obvious to those skilledin the art from the dis closures herein given.
To this end my invention .consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described -and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, characters indicate Parts,
Figure 1 is-a sectional view through-a portion of a plaster board embodying the wherein like `reference like vor correspondmg invention;
I@ i L:application isl a divisional application of Figure 2 is a perspective view` of a. portion of the board;
It may be mentioned that the present my application Ser. No. 348,940 which ma- 'tured into Patent 1,395,031 on AOctober 25,
Referring to the drawings l represents a body of suitable material, as for eiiample plaster, laster Paris, or any equivalent suitable for the purpose which may preferably be handled in a plastic state and thereafter allowed to set or harden. The body is enclosed between the covering sheets 2 and 3 of suitable covering material, and in this connection it may be mentioned that I have found that paper of the desired terial at the edges of the the particular contour of the extreme top sheet and Divided weight or thickness veryv satisfactory for the purpose. One of th as shown sheet 2, is folded toward the coverlng sheet 3' so as to enclose the plastic maboard. Ordinarily I prefer to score the sheet 2 as indicated at 7 so that a perfect corner 5 may be formed, edge, angle type the uphowever, being as desired, and the belng `as preferred. In this turned edge or flange 4 is of a width so that the same will underlie the inner face of the top sheet 3, and the same extend substantially flush with the extreme edge of the cover 3. Generally, the edges 4, which may be turned up as mentioned. on one or sides, wil1 adhere to the plastic body 'so vthat it` 1s. unnecessary to use additional ingredients or material to secure the same 1n place.v A portion of the material Will leak between the extreme edge 6 and the the flange sealing and securing thetwo together. The board may be produced by any desired method or process and with such machinery as may be suitable for` the purpose. The width of the turned up edge orliiange por` tion 4, it being terial which sheet is provided with the ange, will depend upon. the thickness of the body and whether the edge is straight or at angle to the faces of the board, the straight type edge being shown in the drawin s.
It will be noted that in this construction,
or folded over one to enclose only one edge, then this construction might only be,
employed at one ed e the o osite ed e or edges being differet. Thepipesultinggproduct presents a finished and at a perfect desired angle, the board being uniform in'width throughout its length. The completed product hasl many advantages, including increased .strength and durability, and an improved appearance. In case of handling, the edges are protected and there is no breaking away nor sifting out or powdering of the body at the edge.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modificaor side 4, securely.
understood that it is imma.
If the two sheets are` and this application filed`r` e covering sheets,
and smooth ed e vtions may be made in the same Without departing from the spirit of my invention;
hence I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, or uses mentioned.
What I claim as neviT and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A plaster board of the kind described lf comprising a body and a covering sheet aring the cover sheet at said face.
3. A plaster board of the kind described comprising a body and a covering sheet arranged at eachface side thereof, one of said sheets, scored and .flanged over to enclose the edge of the body and extending to adjacent. the opposite face and under1y l ing the cover sheet at said face and te`rminated thereat, said last cover sheet being of a Width toproject to the outer face of the flangedportionof the other sheet.
4. A plaster board of the kind described comprising a body and a covering sheet arranged at each face side thereof, one of said sheets folded over at opposite edges ofthe board to enclose the edge of the body, said folded over edge portions terminating short of the other cover sheet with their eXtremities underlying the edges of said other cover sheet.
In testimony whereof, lt have hereunto signed my name in the presence of tWosubscribing Witnesses. i
