CHARLES R. BIRDSEY, F HINSDALE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS,
TO UNITED STATES GYPSUM COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A COR ILLINOIS.
PORATION' 0F PLASTER-IBOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 25, 1921.
Application filed January 2, 1920. Serial No. 348,940.
I a citizen of the United States, residing at Hinsdale, in the county of Du Page and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plaster-Board, (Case B,)- of which the following is a descri tion.
y invention belongs to that general class of devices known as plaster board or the like, and relates particularly to an improved board which will be simple, convenient, substantial, durable, satisfactory and eflicient, and which maybe economicallyand accurately manufactured. The invention relates partlcula'rly to a ty e of board 1n which the plaster, plaster aris or plastlc material body is substantially inclosed on one or both opposite edges as well as on the face sides, and in whic the edges may be perfectly formed to conform to a .definlte specification as to size or angle. Many other objects and advantages of the constructionherein shown and described will be obvious to those skilled in the art from the disclosures herein given.
To this end my invention consists III the novel construction, arrangement and com- .bination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts, v
Figure 1 is a sectional view through a portion of a plaster board embodying the invention; I
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the board; 7
Fig. 3 is a similar view of a slightly modified construction; and
Fig. 4 is a similar view of another slightly modified construction.
Referrin to the drawings, particularly Fi s. 1 and 2, 1 represents a body of suitab e material, as for example laster, plaster Paris, or any equivalent suitable for the.
purpose, which may be handled in a plastic state and thereafter allowed to set or harden..
The body is inclosed between the coverin sheets 2 and 3 of suitable covering materia and in this connection it may be mentione that I have found that paper of the desired weight or thickness very satisfactory for the purpose.
both edges 4 of one of the covering sheets,
as shown sheet 2, are folded toward the covering sheet 3 so as to inclose the plastic material at the edges of the board. Ordinarily I prefer to score the sheet 2, as indlcated at 7, so that a perfect corner 5 may be formed, the particular contour of the edge 4, however, being as desired. In this type the upturned edge 4 is brought to meet wlth the end 6 of the covering sheet 3, the same being of a width so that the free edge 8 is substantially flush with the top face of the board. Generally the edges 4, which may be turned up as mentioned on one or both sides, will adhere to the plastic body, so that it is unnecessary to use additional ngredlents or material to secure the same in place. A portion of the material will leak between the edge 6 of the top sheet and the side 4, securely sealing and securing the two together.
In the construction shown in Fig. 3, 11
represents a plastic body and 12 and 13 the coverin sheets, one of which may be scored as at 1? and bent or folded over as at 15 so as to provide the edge covering 14 at one or both sides. In this case the top covering sheet is of suflieient width so that its under face at 16 overlies the free edge 18 under the side 14.
In the construction shown in Fig. 4, 21 represents the plastic body and 22 and 23 the covering sheets. In this case, one sheet is bent or folded to form an edge 24 at one or both sides, the same being preferably scored as at 27 so as to form a sharp corner at 25. The cover sheet 23 is preferably of a width to form an overlapping end portion 26, the same being scored as at 27 so as to provide a sharp corner if desired. In this case the edge 26 is of a length to en age with its edge 28 overlying the edge 0 the body, and if desired, extending to the cover sheet 22. The extreme edge 29 of the overlying portion 24 may extend to flush with the extreme face of the cover sheet 23 if so desired. In constructing this type, while the overlying or overlapping edges 26 and 24 may be secured together in any suitable manner, ordinarily enough plaster or plaster Paris, if the body is constructed of this or its equivalent, may flow up between the two upturned edges 24 and 26, securely sealing the same and maintaining the parts together.
' this may be at one or both sides.
sheets are integral and Wrapped or folded parting from the spirit of my invention;
It will be noted that with an ofthese constructions, the edge is substantially completely inclosed, and as before mentioned, If the two over one edge, or it is desired to only inclose one edge, then this construction might only be employed at one edge, the opposite edge being different. The resulting product is produced with a straight, smooth edge and at a perfect angle, the board being uniform' in width throughout its len h. The
completed product has many ac vantages,
and it has increased strength and durability,
and an improvedappearance. In case ofhandling, the edges are protected and there is Iio breaking away nor sifting out or powdering of t e body at the edge.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without deonce I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described, or uses mentioned.
a What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A plaster board of the kind described comprismg a body and a covering sheet arranged at each face side thereof, one of said sheets folded over the edge and extending substantially to and terminating at the op-' posite face and inclosing the edge.
,2. A plaster board of the lgind described comprising a body, and a covering sheet arranged at each face side thereof, one of said sheets being folded over one edge of the body and extending substantially to the opposite face side with itsedge lying subsheet portion and overlyingthe adjoining edge thereof.
4. A plaster board comprising a body, and covering sheet portions on two 'ad'oining angularly related faces of the body, t e covering sheet portion on one of said faces having an end portion extending flush with the other of said faces, and the other covering sheet portion extending beyond the meeting edge of said faces substantiallyv flush with the outer face of theother cover-v ing sheet portion andoverlying the adjoining end part thereof.
- In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing. witnesses.
