Specification of Letters Patent. Pmegimqgd Aug, 2Q), 922,
Application lved llebruary 25, 1920. Serial No. 361,'l27.
To all whom t mary concern: l
Be it known that T, FREDERICK FOURNIER, a citizen of the United States, residin at city and county of San Francisco and tate of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window Fasteners or Latches, ofwhich the following is ay specification.
This invention relates to window fasteners or latches. Q
Tt is the principal object of the present in vention to provide a simple and efficient form of window fastener, especially adaptable for use in connection with swinging windows to securely lock the same in their closed posi tion.
The present invention comtemplates the mounting of an eccentric actuated latch iinger on the window casing, which finger is adapted, when actuated, to engage a keeper plate on the window sash to draw the latter securely against and secureit to the casing.
@ne form which the invention may assume description and illustrated in the accompanying drawin s, in which:
ig. 1 is a fragmentary View in perspective illustratingthe manner in which the latch is applied to a swinging window casing. v
Fig. 2 is an enlarged view illustratingl the latch mechanism.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, 10 indicates a sash frame a Swingin sash ll and a latch mechanism generally indicated at l2, the latter forming kthe subject matter of the present invention.
The latch consists of a keeper plate 31 which is secured to the inner face of the sash stile. This plate is formed with a verticallyv extending rectangular slot 32 into which a lock linger 33 may project. The lock finger 33 is pivotally or freely mounted upon an operating eccentric 34. This eccentric is a circular vopening formed through the finger.. A pivot pin35 extends through the eccentr'c at -a point off center and thus insures that as an operator 36 Vis swung the finger 33 willbe advanced or retracted asthe case may be, it being understood that the lock finger is positively secured to move with the eccentric 34. The iinger 33 has a hooked end 37 upon the outer face of which aprotrusion 38-occurs. This protrusion is adapted to register with a recess 39 in the back of the keeper plate 32 to prevent the yfinger from being pried up when provided with the Windew is locked. n will aise be noaav that the finger has an oscillating movement 'as well as a reciprocating movement. This is produced by a lug 40 in theJ path of travel of the enlarged pivotal end of the finger. This lug engages a cam face 41' along the under side of the linger and when is in its forward position will act to elevate the finger while permitting it to fall as the eccentric is rotated and the latch linger re` tracted. p
Tn operation of the present invention it will be assumed that the window is in its closed position and the latch retracted. To latch the'window the operating. arm 36 Vis rotated to rotate the eccentric 3a. This elevates and advances the latch iinger 33 to engage the keeper'plate. During the latter part of the eccentrics action, the nger 33 is lowered and slightly retracted so as to engage the protrusion 38 with "the recess 39 and also draw the window tightly against the sash frame.
Tt will thus be seen that the device here disclosed provides a simple form of latch made by'those skilled in the art without de-l parting from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
the finger `which will draw the sash tightly against the Having thus described my invention, what T claim` and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A latch structure comprising a lock plate, a keeper plate disposed in a plane at right angles thereto, therethrough, a'circular lock cam eccentrically pivoted upon the lock plate and swinging in a plane parallel thereto, a lever member for rotating-said cam, a lock nger having acircular opening through which thel cam extends, said finger moving in a plane Iparallel to the `face of the 'lock plate and adapted to project through the opening in the keeper p1atea downwardly extending hook formed at the outer end of said frame a Wedge face formed on the lower edge o the finger near its pivotal mounting, and a lug on eccentric movement of the lock cam, whereby rotation of said cam will causethe hooked and having an opening lll.
,right angles thereto,
end of the finger to move upwardly' and lor wardly through the opening in the keeper plate, thereafter lowering until its hooked end engages the keeper plete, and then drewi .to project through the opening in the keeper plete9 a. downwardly extending hook formed et the outer end of seid frame, e wedge ieee iorrned on the lower edge ot the finger neer its pivotal mounting, end e lug on the keeper plete9 eooperating with the eccentric move' rnent of the lock cam, whereby rotation of said cern will cause the hooked end of the linger to move upwardly end 'forwardly through the opening in the-keeper plate, thereafter lowering until its hooked end engages the keeper plate, and then drawing toward the lock plete, e retaining lug formed on 'the end'tece of the loolr linger hook and e protrsion on the keeper plete heneeth which said lug seats when the linger isv drawn thereegeinst.
v ln testimony whereof l have hereunto set my hond in the presence of two subscribing witneeses.
