STEPHEN BRYANT, OF BETHANY, MISSOURI.
POST AND BRUSH FULLER.
Application filed August 18, 1921.
T aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that STEPHEN O. BRYANT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bethany, in the county of Harrison and State of lllissouri, has invented new and useful improvements in Post and Brush Pullers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, strong and ethcient device adapted for pulling pests and post stumps from the ground for replacement by new posts and also adapted for use as a brush puller and a means for uprooting stumpsof comparatively small size with the minimum of effort on the part of the operator, such device being suitable particularly for farm use in the repairing of fences to avoid the loss of time and effort incident to the removal of the base 2 portions of rotted or broken posts and avoid the disadvantages of placing a substitute or new post at one side of the old post and therefore either out of alignment with the fence as originally erected or at unequal distances from the adjacent posts; and with this object in view the invention consists in a coi'istruction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pulling or raising apparatus embodying the in vention.
Figure 2 a side view of the same showing the support in section.
Figure 3 is an elevation of the support.
The device consists essentially of a lever 10 comprising a socket member 11 and a handle member 12 fulcrumed upon a support 13 and provided with grappling means 14 for engagement; with a post or like object to be lifted, uprooted or drawn.
in the construction illustrated the grappling means consists of a chain attached at one end to the extremity of the socket memher ll. of the lever and adapted to be wrapped one or more times around a post or the ebject to be lifted and a hook 15 for engagement by the free end of the chainor any convenient link thereof when the proper engagement of the chain with the post has been effected, it being obvious that in practice the tightening of the chain when the extremity of thesocket member is arranged at i one side of the post will serve to clamp the post and prevent slipping during the pivotal Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 29, 1922.
Serial no. 493,285.
movement of the lever incident to the depression of the free end of the handle member, and as the pulling of the post or other object progresses fresh grips thereof may be secured to provide for a step by step pulling thereof by relieving the pressure on the handle member and depressing the grapple end of the lever to thereby loosen or relieve the tension on the chain and permit it to slip downwardly on the post.
The socket member is tubular at its rear end for the reception of the adjacent end of the handle member as clearly indicated in the drawing and preferably said socket member carries the bearing sleeve 16 which is engaged with the fulcrum pin 17 between the upper end of the standards 13 which constitute the support and which standards are preferably provided with relatively broad bases 18 to bear upon the surface of the ground. Said standards are inwardly curved toward their upper ends as indicated at 13" to form an arch and the fulcrum pin 17 connects said inwardly turned extremities of the standards near the upper edges thereof and therefore near the crest or keystone portion of the arch so as to ensure the maximum strength for the weight and dimensions of the elements employed.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A pulling or lifting apparatus having a support, a lever fulcrumed upon the support and a grapple carried by one end of the lever, said support having a transverse bearing pin and the lever consisting of a socket member and a handle member for detachably engaging the socket member, said socket member being provided at the end opposite to the grapple with a depending bearing sleeve engaged with the fulcrum pin.
2. A pulling or lifting apparatus having a support, lever fulcrumed upon the support and a grapple carried by one end of the lever, said support consisting of spaced standards having inwardly curved upper enus forming an arch and terminally spaced apart, and a fulcrum pin connecting the extremities of said standards near the upper edges of the inwardly curved portions thereof, and the lever having a depending hearing sleeve engaging said pin.
In testimony whereof he affixes his signature.
STEPHEN O. BRYANT.
