Be it known that HENRY ARMBRUSTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVoodburn, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Post Fullers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in post pullers, and has for its principal object to provide a simple device which may be readily set upcin an operative position for the purpose of removing or extracting decayed posts or stumps from the ground.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a post puller of the above men# tioned character, which is of such a construction as to prevent the accidental displacement of the post engaging means from its operative position around the post while the latter is being raised. j
A further object of the invention is to provide a post puller of the above mentioned character which when placed in an operative position with respect to the post to be raised will permit the post engaging means to firmly grip the post in such a manner as to prevent the possibility of any lateral strain on the post, thus preventing 1z0 the post from breaking olf at a point adjacent the ground.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a post puller of the above mentioned character, which is especially adapted for use in raising telegraph poles, trees, or the like, in a quick and eiiiclent manner. l

In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral l designates generally the support forming my invention and comprises the vertical standards 2 and 3, respectively. Each standard tapers smaller towards its upper end and` adapted tobe supported on the upper end of each standard by suitable fastening means such as is shown at 4in thel drawing, is the bracket or casting 5. Each bracket is preferably supported on the front face of each standard, as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawing, and the bracket, furthermore, is provided with an opening 6 adjacent the upper end thereof and a similar opening 7 adjacent the lower 'end thereof, the purpose of which will here- 75 inafter be more fully described. A similar bracket 8 vis mounted on the lower front face of each standard and is also provided with an opening 9, as is clearly illustrated in the drawing, preferably Fig. l.
.A suitable brace l0 is adapted to extend through the openings 9 in the bracket 8 supported on the lower end of each .standard forholding the same in proper spaced relation, and this brace or shaft 10 is so mount- 85 ed in the opening 9 of cach bracket as to be rotatably supported therein. yKeyed to thel shaft l() intermediate its ends is the sprocket wheel'll.' j Y Extending through the registering open 90 ings 6 provided in thejupper portion `of each bracket 5 is the shaft 12.' One of the ends of .this shaft extends for a substantial distance beyond the side ofy the standard 3, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2 95 of the drawing, and mounted thereon is the gear wheel 13. Any .suitable means lmay be associated therewith for securing the ygear wheel in a locked position on the shaft so as te rotate therewith. A similar `ahaft 14.n 113@ is adapted to extend through the lower openings 7 of each bracket 5, and keyed on the shaft 14; beyond the side of the standard 3 is the pinion 15. rl`his pinion is so arranged on the shaftas to mesh with the gear wheel 13, whereby the latter may be driven thereby. A suitable handle orV the like such as illustrated at 1G inl the drawing is mounted on the free end of the shaft- 14 adjacent the pinion 15- foractu-ating the same. A sprocketwheel 17 similar to the sprocket wheel 11 is keyed on the .shaft 12' and is arranged in vertical alignment with the sprocket wheel 11 and adaptedto'` extend around these aligning sprocket wheels is an endless sprocket chain designated by the numeral 18.
This sprocket wheel may be of any suitable construction as is' well" known in the art. Formed on certain of the links of the sprocket' chain 18 are the hooks 19; Certain of the links have these hooks 191 extending laterally from the sides thereof, as is clearly illustrated in Fig; 2 of the drawing, and the purpose of' this arrangement will be hereinafter more fully described. These hooks are so arranged aste-halve the free ends thereof extending upwardly and as many of these links having the hooks formed thereon may beprovidedas is necessary, and
I do not wish to limit myself to the particular number or arrangement of the links and hooks associated therewith.
Also forming" a part lof the present invention is the post' engagingI means, whichin the present instance is in the formation of a lleiiible chain and isy further illustrated at 2OL in the drawing. One end of the chain is provided with a` hook: 21 for the well known purposes, and when the chain is wrapped around the post to be raised in theV manner as will be presently described, the hook 21 will engage one of the links of the chain and hold the same in position around the post, while the opposite end of the chain is'adapted' to be placed on the hooks 22 which are provided on the lower portion of the unitv 23, the upper portion of which is provided with the downwardly turned hooks 24. The downwardly turned hooks 2d are adapted to engage a pair ofthe upwardly extending hooks 19l carried byl certain of the links of the sprocket chain 18.
In operation, the device is so arranged or set up as to have the sprocket chain 18 extend-ing substantially parallel and adjacent the post A, which is to be raised and the chain 2O is then placed around the upper "portionof the post or at any desired point thereon, andl after the chain has been wrapped around suliiciently to insure against the accidental displacement from the post, the unit 23 is then brought into engagement with the post engaging chain by having the hooks22 receiving the free endof the chain 20, and the hooks 2d formed on the upper end of the unit are then brought into cngagement with the nearest pair of upwardly extending hooks 19 provided on the sprocket chain 18. The operator then actuates the handle 16 so as to canse the pinion 15 to operate the gear wheel 13, whereby a rotary movement is imparted to the shaft 12 and the sprocket wheel 17 keyed thercom thus raisingI the endless-chain 18 and consequently resulting in the raising or lifting of the post from the ground.
If desired, a suitable pawl and ratchet means may beassociated with the driving shaft 1d for holding the saine in a prede termined position so as to prevent the accidental return of the sprocket chain 18, and thereby enable they pest to be supported in a ra'isedl position, so that the same may be easily and quickly removed and transported".
lt will thus be seen from the foregoing description that a simple and efficient devieehas been provided which will enable stu-inps and' posts of various kinds to be easily removed from the ground, the device bei-ng` so arranged and operated in such a manner as to prevent the possibility of any lateral strain on the post while the same is being raised which would ordinarily result in thebreaking off of the post adjacent the ground.
From the foregoing description of the construction of myy improved apparatus, it will beA seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efficient means for carrying out the objects of the invention, and while l have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion, and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit or sacricing any of the principles of the invention,
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by lietters Patent is 1^. ln a device of the class described comprising a vertical standard, fastening means thereon, comprising brackets, spaced shafts mounted in said brackets and carrying sprocket wheels, an endless chain mounted on said sprocket wheels, means for actuating;l the same, a flexible member adapted to eircircle a post, hooks formed on certain of the links of'said endless chain, and a. detachable unit having hooksl formed on the lower end thereof for engagement with said flexible member, and hooks being provided on the upper end of said unit for engagement with said hooks on said endless chain, substantially as described.
2. A post puller of the class described comprising vertical supports tapered toiisy Wards their upper ends, fastening means comprising an upper bracket7 openings in the upper and lower ends thereof, shafts eX- tending through said openings, meshing gear wheels on said shafts, an endless chain mounted on said upper shaft, means for aetuating the same comprising a handle on the shaft mounted in the lower opening of the bracket, a flexible chain adapted to en- 10 circle a post, upstanding hooks formed on certain of the links of said endless chain, a detachable unit having hooks formed on the lower end thereof for engagement With the flexible post encircling chain, and hooks formed on the upper portion of said unit for engagement with said upstanding hooks, substantially as described.
