Iva/Mania? W. Wild,
WILLIAM wrnn, or me t. 00L, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 WESTS GAS IMPROVEMENT COMPANY LIMITED, 0F MANCHESTER, ENGLAND.
HEATING 0F To all whom it may concern Be it known that i, WILLIAM Winn,
subject of the King ofG'reat Britain and Ireland, and resident of Beechwood, Newton Drive, Blackpool, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Connection with the Heating of Vertical 'Retorts for the Distillation of Garbonaceous Materials, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vertical retorts for the distillation of coal and like carbonaceous materials and has for its object to provide in a ready and efiicient manner for the regulation of the secondary air required forcombustion in the combustion chambers around the retorts so that the control of the temperatures in each of the said chambers can be more effectively exercised and without interfering with the conditions existing in the remaining chambers.
The invention comprises the provision of two secondary air inlets to each combustion chamber at each side of the retorts, the one inlet being adjacent the flame orifice and the other at a point midway between the ends of the chamber, the arrangement being such that by reducing the amount of air passed to the gas as it issues through the flame orifice into the chamber, combustion can be effected at the second air inlet and the temperature at the end of the chamber opposite the flame orifice be'maintainedapproximately the same as at the flame orifice end of the chamber.
Referring to the accompanying explanatory drawings Figure 1 is a sectional elevation and Figure 2 a sectional elevation on the line AB of Figure 1 illustrating a retort setting constructed and arranged in accordance with this invention.
Figure 3 is a sectionai plan the setting on the line CD of drawn to an enlarged scale.
Figure is a detail view to be herein after referred to.
lhe same reference letters in the ent views indicate the same parts.
in accordance with this invention, the secondary air required for combustion by each of the gas jets in the combustion chad bore a is drawn direct from the atmosphere view through Figure 2,

and independently of the supplies for the remaining gas flames. Preferably, each secondary air supply 5 has its own control valve c which may be a sliding plate, and extends across and through the division and outside walls d of the setting from the side opposite its flame orifice 6 so that the said air becomes heated prior to meeting the gas. To ensure a more even distribution of the heat in the combustion chambers a, 1 cmploy two secondary air inlets 6, f at the opposite sides of each row of retorts g, the 7 one inlet (3 being adjacent the flame orifice e and the other approximately midway between theends of the chamber a; so that b reducing the amount of air admitted by the port 5 and passed to the gas at e as it issues into the chamber, combustion can be effected at the second air inlet f and the tempera ture at the ends of the chambers opposite the flame orifices e be maintained approximately the same as atthe gas inlet end of the chamber. E thus obtain a more uniform heating of the various retorts of a setting. The waste gases leave the chambers a at the ports h. The gas burnt at the orifices e is obtained from the producer 5 and travels up the setting by the passages The air supply for the secondary air passages 7 which lead to points midway between the ends of the combustion chambers The secondary air passages 3 and 7" serve to assist the brickwork of the combustion chamber a; in withstanding the high temperatures now usual when steaming of the retorts is practised. Further, the use of two secondary air passages as 6 and f for such gas inlet 6 prevents locai overheating adjacent the gas orifice.
When steaming is practised, the steam may be passed down the setting through passages formed in blocks as disposed between the retorts where it will. be highly superheated. It enters the retorts by the purposes.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by 'Letters Patent is ln means for the distillation of carbonaceous materials, in combination, a row of vertical retorts, superposed horizontal combustion chambers disposed around the said retorts for heating the latter,-each row of mamas retorts being heated in anyone horizontal plane by two chambers arranged at its 0pposite sides, gas inlets to said chambers at one end of the row of'retorts, air supply conduits extending along the whole horizontal-vlength of the combustion chambers to adjacent said gas inlets, further air supply conduits extending along a portion only of the horizontal length of the combustion chambers and each entering one of the latter at'a point between its ends, and a waste gas outlet from each combustion chamber at the end thereoi opposite to the gas inlet, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my named to this specification.
WILLIAM WILD.
