IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-DELIVERING SACKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 142,741, dated September 9, 1873; application filed November 30, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WM. S. SHAGKLETON, of Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and Improved Delivering Goal-Sack and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and complete description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of the same.

Figures 1 and 2 are side views of the coalsack. Fig. 3 is an edge View. Fig. 4 is a view of the mouth.

Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several Views.

The object of this invention is to provide a strong, durable, and convenient article in which to carry coal by the coal heavers, which article consists of a stout sack having a projecting lip for discharging its contents, and for protecting the hand holding the sack while the contents are being discharged. The sack is also provided with a handle, whereby it is supported upon the back; and, furthermore, it is provided with a pair of ears or rings, one on each side, for the convenience of being lifted by any appropriate appliance, the same being an improvement of a coalsack for which a patent was granted to me April 4, 1871.

In the drawings, A represents the sack. Said sack is made of a stout tarred canvas, or of other suitable material, and of the shape shown. One side of the mouth of the sack is extended beyond the rim of the other, forniing a lip, B. Said side from which the lip proceeds is considered the front of the sack, and thereon is secured a handle, O, whereby the sack is retained upon the back of the coalheaver, and for the convenience of emptying it. The bottom of the sack is covered with a shield of leather, D, for the purpose of adding thereto greater strength and durability.

The above-described sack is essentially the same as that for which a patent was granted to me at the time above specified.

The sacks are filled in the coal-yard or elsewhere, while they are standing upon the ground. Some trouble has been found in lifting them into a cart or wagon for transportation, for the reason that they are not provided with handles or other means whereby they can be conveniently lifted, the handle 0 not being intended for that purpose, nor is it sufficient therefor.

To avoid this trouble'and to make the sack more convenient for handling is the purpose of my improvement; which consists in securing to each side of the mouth of the sack a loop or ear, E, or its equivalent device, the opening of the loops being of sufficient size to admit the hand.

By this means the sack can be readily and conveniently lifted about, either by the hands or by any mechanical appliance instituted for that purpose, as a rope and pulley, the hooks of which can be caught in the loops, and the sack thereby hoisted into the cart.

This bag, although especially intended for the carrying of coal, is, however, equally as convenient for carrying any other article or articles, in the handling of which especial care is not required to be exercised.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The herein-described coal-sack, consisting of the body A, lip B,handle 0, leather shield l), and ears E, as and for the purpose specified.
