To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Jenn Harrison, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at l/lalad City, in the county of Oneida and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful lmprovementsin v -Trenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches of the sliding jaw type, and more particularly to the adjusting means therefor. An important object of this invention is to provide means for quickly and accurately adjusting the jaws of a wrench by establishing sliding connection between the adjusting elements and the ratchet teeth of the shank.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench. of the character described which is few in parts, of highly simplified construction, and cheap to manufacture.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described, which by virtue of its extreme simplicity and cheapness of manufacture, will successfully compete with numerous other devices in a highly crowded art.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

Rotatablyonthe upper side of the shank 6. To normally retain the adjusting element 12 in engagement with the ratchet teeth 14, I have provided a leaf spring 15. As clearly shown in'l igure 2, the leaf spring 15 is longitudinally curved and is adapted to engage the jaw 8 at its central portion thereof. The end portions of the leaf spring 15 are adaptedto engage the opposite end portions of the spindle 10. For the purpose of retaining the adjusting element on the spindle 10, I have provided a head 16 thereon. One end portion of the leaf spring 15 is provided with a semi-circular recess 17, adapted for contact with the upper side of the spindle 10.
To counteract the excessive friction between t-he ratchet teeth 14 and the spiral threads 13 as a result of the action of the leaf spring 17, I have provided a cross section or bearing arm 18. As clearly shown in Figure 2, this bearing arm 18 traverses the rear portion of the jaw 8 and supports the rear portion of the spindle 10. It will be apparent that by virtue of this bearing arm 18 the free turning of the adjusting element 12 is thus permitted.
In the use of my invention, it will be apparent that the jaws maybe quickly closed by sliding the jaw 8 along the shank 6 without the necessity of adjusting the same through the medium of the adjusting element 12. When it is desired to widen the space between the aws 7 and 8, it will be obvious that the adjusting element 12 is lifted upwardly, thereby releasing the engagement between the same and the ratchet teeth 14. For a fine adjustment of the jaws, it will be apparent that the adjusting element may be rotated as is usual in the construction of sliding jaw wrenches.
While l have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that I may make such minor changes in arrangement and construction of parts, as will remain within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.
It should be observed that the cavity of the hollow movable jaw constitutes a housing for the stem upon which the worm nut is revolubly mounted, said stem being pivotally mounted at the end remote from said worm nut, and that the bowed spring by which the nut is yieldingly held in engagement with the rack of the shank, and which has terminal bearing upon the stem and in- Patented Aug. 22, 11922.

A wrench having a jaw with a shank extendingtherefrom and provided with teeth, a movabl'e jaw on said shank, a bar on the movable jaw, a spindle having a head integral therewith, a screw element to engage said teeth disposed intermediate said integral head and said bar, said screw element having an axial opening therethrough of greater diameter than the spindle and of less diameter than the integral head, whereby the spindle at its free end may bepassed through said opening to journal the screw element thereon against displacement, means to pivot said spindle to said movable jaw, and
a leaf spring carried by said movable jaw in contact with thespindle to maintain the screw element normally in engagement with the teeth of the, shank. I
