@ur invention relates to the construction of furnaces and has particular reference to a novel buclrstay for use in connection with open hearth furnaces.
One object of our invention is to provide an improved form of vbuclrstay composed of a substantially lrectangular rolled or forged lsteel slab having a novel water passageway therein. p
Another object is to provide a buclrstay which may be more easily and cheaply manufactured than those heretofore used. Y
Heretofore buclrstays of this class have had an aperture drilled throughout their length to provide a p'assagewayfor the cooling water. rThe drilling of these buclrstays requires a great amount of labor' and'is costly. i
To provide a buclrstay of reasonable cost and of great durability, we manufacture it of a rolled or forgedsteel slab. of the required length. This slab, usually rectangular in cross section, is then machined. or forged to form an open recess along one of its narrow faces, and closing plate is into the passageway and tapped to receive the circulation pipes.
The construction of our improved buckstays will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawings,in which :-v

A cover plate 13 is mounted on the shoulders 11 and is of such size as to completely close the open side of the recess 10. The edges of the cover plate 13 are beveled as at 14 to co-operate with the beveled portion 12 of the recess walls and forni a V-Shaped retaining pocket 15 for the reception of welding met-al 15a used to weld the plate in position. It will readily be understood that by welding` the plate 13 in position a permanent, tight and practically integral construction is obtained.
An inlet port 16 is formed through the end of the stay and communicates with the recess 10 and has its outer end countervbored and threaded to form a seat 17 for plate 13 adjacent the upper end of the recess l and an outletpipe 2l' is *screwed therein.
