Description

R. S. SANBORN.
lent-Connections for Hollow Railway Rails.
No. 142,654, Patented September9,1873.
jrzreizfaz 1 A'IENT rrrcnsi RUFUS S. SANBORN, OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN JOINT-CONNECTIONS FOR HOLLOW RAILWAY-RAILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,654, dated September 9, 1873; application filed April 14, 1873.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RUFUS S. SANBORN, of Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Connecting-Tubes for Tubular Rails for Railroads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing a rail made of one piece of metal with tube in place. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the connecting-tube.
This invention relates to a certain improvement on the connecting-tubes for the steelplate-metal rails for which patents have been granted me, which improvements consist in making the connecting-tube with one end or both beveled, in order that the rails may be readily separated when desired.
Heretofore I have made my rail either of one piece of metal, wit-h the meeting edges Welded together, or else having a separate bottom or base secured to the edges. To both of these forms there are many objections, and these are overcome in the present invention, which consists of a rail, a, made of one piece of elastic steel'plate metal, having its edges meet at the middle of the base. By
this construction I retain all that is valuable in my other rails, and besides secure a stronger, cheaper, and much more easily made rail, without seam or joint. 1) represents the tube for connecting two rails together, made of plate metal folded into a tubular form, and inserted into the hollow upper portion or head of the rails. One end is beveled, as at 0, so that when the rails are raised for any purpose the tube will offer but little resistance, and will permit them to slip off of it, as will be readily understood. If desired, both ends of this tube may be beveled.
Of course, I do not limit the application of the beveled tube to this form of rail, as it is essential to the perfect working of the other forms.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with a hollow rail, of a beveled connecting-tube, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my said invention signed and witnessed at Rockford.
