Be it known that we, HYMAN GOLBER and ARTHUR F. The totalizer of the 'Wahlmachine is mounted upon a traveling truck, moving synchronously with the carriage of the type writer, audin order to insert .a number in the machine this carriage first tabulated to the decimal place corresponding to the first significant digit of said number,:and the number is then inserted in the machjne one digit at atime. As eachdigit key is depressed, the master wheel rotates a number of places, correspondin to :said key, and inserts the required igit into the proper decimal place of the totalizer. After each digit is inserted, the typewriter carriage advances one step to the left,-thus bringing the master wheel into engagement with the next lower decimal order of the totulizer, and the next digit of the number is inserted in said place. This operation is continued, one digit at a time being inserted into the totalizer' until the entire number has thus been inserted. The mechanism by which the vertical motion of the digit keys is translated into a differential rotation of the master wheei has been thoroughly described in the cited patents to Wahl, and-since said mechanism is no part of our present invention, it is not necessary to describe it in detail in this place.

Vhen it is desired to clear the machine, that is, write the exhibited total on the worksheet, the gear shift is thrown to its subtracting position and the numeral keys are operated in a sequence determined by the exhibited total. This results in subtracting-the 'exhibited total from the totalizer, which, if the operation has been correctly performed, then stands at zero.
Inasmuch as the lVahl machine has no operation corresponding to the automatic extraction of a total, that is, totals must be extracted from the W'ahl totalizer by the process of copying the total as just de scribed, it sometimes happens that the operator either misrcads the total exhibited by the totalizer, or operates the wrongdigit keys and thus an amount is left in the totalizer when the totalizer should stand at zero or be clear. Accordingly when the next computation is made in the machine if it is not noticed that the totalizer is not standing clear before the beginning of the computation a wrong computation will result, since the number stand ng in the totulisier wiil be added to the numbers in EUl'tSijl therein.

Reference to the cited :patents ofWahl will disclose the fact thatthere' are ten of these fans 53, one for each of the nine di 't keys and one connected to the 0 key. ach of the fans has cut into its surface a series of ratchet teeth 54 on the upper side and a second series of'ratchet teeth 55 on the lower side. The ratchet teeth 54 are adapted to be acted on by the front full stroke pawl 56, and the ratchet teeth 55 are adapted to be acted on by the back full stroke pawl 57. The front full stroke pawl 56, being in engagement with the teeth 54 during the down stroke of the digit key, prevents any upward motion of the key until the down stroke has been complebed and the' back full stroke pawl 57 is in engagement with the teeth 55 on the up stroke of the digit key and prevents any downward motion of said key until the up stroke has been completed.
The rockshaft 41 has rigid with it an opcrating arm 58 which by its action on an arm 59 rigid with the back fullxstroke pawl 57- hol'ds said pawl out of engagement with the teeth 55 during the downstroke of the key. r In order to provide means for restoring the machine to service under these conditions, we have provided the lever 25 with a finger piece 68, which project through the totalizer side plate 69. In the event that the machine has, become locked up through the printing outof a wrong total, then the fingerpiece 68 may :be pulled towards the front of the totalizer,thereby' maimall unlatching the lever 30. This will result in therreturn'of the totalizer to zero, wand when theikey-67is operated in the subunits place, thus printing a-second star -over the star previously printed, it will, return to its normal 'postionfiwithout interference. The totalizer of the machine will then be 'clear and: read 'for anew computation.
-'It inay ihei urged that the presence of a .star on the worksheet opposite a total does not necessarily meanfthat the correct total Zhas been printed-:-from the machine, since, as just"noted, one' may print an incorrect total, then rint'th'e star, which will result in the mac ine becoming locked up. The machine can-ihen-be re eased by manual operation of the finger piece 68 and a new computation'stnrt'ed with the totalizer not standing at clear. However. we do not consider that this objection is at all material, since an adding machine of the lVahl type can always be intentionally misoperated. as. for oxample,-by inserting a piece of paper between the type bar and the platen, where by a number may be inserted in the machine and not be printed :on the platen at all. \Ve do not aim in'our present invention to guard against; malicious misoperation. The person who operates a Wahl machine is more interested than anyone else in operating themachine correctly. since the operator is the person who will have to search for errors when the same have been discovered. Consequently, it is sufficient for our present purpose to warn the operator at the time an incorrect total is extracted from the machine, and to this end our hereinidescribed invention is well adaptedpsince uponzattempting to print a star in the subunits place when the totalizer is not clear, the machine will become locked up and can only be restored toworking condition by intentional operation of the fingerpieoe 68. .It will be noted that by the present invention' the condition of the register is tested by operating thekey 67 iii-the sub-units positionil'fwhen-this 'key is depressed it immediately returns to normal'position without'loclring up the machinethen-the operator issthereby-notified that the totalizer is clear, but if when it is operated the key remains in its depressed position and locks up the machine then .the o erat-oris'by that condition notified that die machine is not 1 clear; The star type isnsed'merely to'indicate or to assure thatithis key was operated in the Lsub-units position. .rThehoperator is required tohdepress this key whenever. .the

Anotheradvantage resulting from pm improved mechanism is its extreme simplicity, since it consists in the addition of but a few simplepartsto theordinary totalizer mech- V It will-be furthor' observed that totalizers equipped with'ourclear signal device and totalizers not so equipped rrgay'be operated on the same machine without interference. It is only" necessary to remember not to attempt to printflthe star in the sub-units place of a totalizer notequipped with our improved signal. As a matter offact, it willbe impossible to operate the star'printing key in -the sub-units place of anytotalizer not equipped with ourimproved clear signal, since the lYali l totalizers -are customarily providedwith aii extension of the side plate 69,- which registers with the master dog 40 when the totalizer is in the sub-units position and thus prevents the rotation of said dog. Therefore, in operating a machine equipped with ordinary Wahl totalizers and l'lahl totalizer equipped with our herein described invention, the operator is automatically prevented from misoperating the ma china.
In our herein described structure, which is our preferred form, we have describedthe star printing signal as being placed on the zero key and printed by throwing said key into its shift position. However, it is by no means necessary thatthe zero key; be employed. Any of the other digit keys might be employed for this purpose or-indeed-an extrafan -53 mightbe put into the-actuator and connected .-to the special key which printedwonly the starpthus obviating the necessity of operating the typewriter in'its shift position when it was desired to print the characteristic mark for theclear signal. \Vahl actuators equipped with eleven fans are described in the Ipatentto, Arthur .'F. This feature has been thoroughly explained in" the .eo nding application of 120 Arthur F. Poole erial No. 757934, filed March 31, 1913, 'nowrPatent No; 1,311,710, dated July 29, 1919, to which reference may be had for further description of the action of the comb 18 on the short teeth 17.
Many improvements and variations may be made in the precise mechanism herein de scribed without departing from the spirit Of our invention, since we claim:
1. In a calculating machine, the combina- 130 saidkey and said totalizer to permit a par (ion of a totaiizer, a zero determining device in said totalizer, a key adapted to print a characteristic mark, and mechanism connecting said/key with said totalizer to permita partial operation sufficient to print said 1na1 k, but to prevent a complete operation of said key in the-event said totalizer does not stand at'zero;
