Be it known that I, LoUIs L. ANsAR'r, a citizen of the United States, residing in borough of the Bronx, in the county of the Bronx, city and'State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Combined Typewritin and Computing Machines, of which the Iollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to combined typewriting and computing machines, settable for addition or subtraction, and, more particularly, to state-controlling means effective during the return or. backing movement of the carriage, and is herein illustrated as applied to a bookkeeping machine of the Underwood-Hanson type.
In such machines'now in use, the statecontrolling for addition or subtraction is effected automatically in the letter-feeding movement of the carriage, but no state-con trolling is effected during the return movement thereof. Means have been proposed whereby, when the machine is set for subtraction, upon backing the carriage into a computing zone, the machine will be reset for addition, thus insuring the proper Setting of the machine when backedinto an addition zone, but failing to insure sub; traction-setting upon backing the machine into a subtraction zone. Means'have also been proposed whereby the proper setting of the computing mechanism will be insured upon hacking into a zone irrespective of the addition or subtraction character of the zone.

easily applicable to machines in use, whereby the proper setting of the machine will be insured in case the carriage is backed into either an addition or a subtraction zone.
In carrying out. the present invention. advantage is taken of the fact that actuation of a motor-trip by the carriage will reset the machine for addition it previously set for subtraction. To this end, the tappet on the motor-trip-lever is provided with a beveled face on the side engaged by an additiou-stop as the carriage is backed into the corresponding computing zone, and, in orsponding subtraction-stop an Serial No. 520,799.

In hacking into a subtraction zone, it is obviously undesirable to trip the motor, for, if the machine is set for subtraction, it is undesirable to disturb the mechanism, and, if set for addition, no chan e in the condition of the computing mec anism Will be effected. Consequently, the subtractionstop or subtraction-state-controller is provided with a hinged downward projection which is supported against yieldin when it. is brought into engagement with the tappet of the motor-trip-lever during a lettert'eed movement of the machine, but which will yield when brought into engagement with this tappet during a backing or return movement of the carriage.
In machines of this kind, subtraction-setting during a letter-feeding movement of the carriage into' a subtraction zone is effected by a cam-bar carried b the correextending substantially the length of a computing zone which, as the carriage enters a computing zone, engages and depresses the tappet on the subtraction-trip-lever and maintains the lever in actuated condition until the carriage passes out of the computing zone. In machines heretofore in use, the tappet has been supported on the subtraction-trip-lever so as to yield when engaged by the cam-bar during a return movementof the carriage. According to the present invention, however, the cam-bar ,on each stop is utilized to actuate the subtractiontrip-lever in the'return movement, as Well as in the letter-feed movement of. the carriage, and the tappet on the subtractiontrip-lever is modified in form and so supported on the subtraction-trip-lever as to transmit movement from the cam-bar to the subtraction-trip-lever irrespective of the direction of movement of the carriage. For convenience, the tappets on the motortrip-lever and on the subtraction-trip-lever may be of the same general shape, and supported on the corresponding levers in the same general manner.

Preferably the right-hand tapered or cam edge of each tappet is so inclined as to readily co-operate with the corresponding portion of the proper stop mounted on the carriage, and the left-hand tapered edge is at a comparatively steep angle, but so inclined, however, that a slight rocking of the tappet or dog to the right about its pivot will bring the left-hand beveled edge to a. proper camming angle.
Hitherto, the general operator has been automatically operated as the carriage passes out of acomputing zone, and consequently the machine has been reset for addition, if otherwise set while in the zone, and,
upon entering a' subtraction zone, the 'com-.
puti ng mechanism has been automatically set for subtraction. There has, however, been no provision of means to insure an addition setting when the carriage is moved into an addition zone in the letter-feed di-' rection.
In order, however, to prevent improper action of the computing mechanism in an addition zone, due, for example, to the settingof the machine to subtraction manually before it enters the zone, provision is made, according to the present invention, of suitable means to avoid the possibility of such errors. To this end, the ordinary additionstops are provided with bars extending leftwardly therefrom substantially the length of a computin zone, and these bars are provided with o set portions, in the form of tappets or dogs, which, upon movement of the carriae into addition zones in the letter-feed d1rection, will actuate the motortrip and insure the proper setting of the addltion zone or zones. Obviously, no advantage is gained by actuating the general operator as the carriage backs out of an addition zone, and, to avoid such'actuation, the ofiset portion or dog at the left-hand end of the bar of the addition-stop may be mounted thereon, so as to yield when en-' gaged by the addition-trip-tappet during a backing movement of the carria e. o
It will be evident that, according to the present invention, very slight changes in existing machines 'are necessary to insure proper state-setting of the computing mechsage .of the carriage through a computing zone in a letter-feeddirection.

Upon movementof a carriage 11 into a computing zone, a' frusto-conical roll 12 on a denominational selector 13 will ride up the tapered end of a roller or zone-controller 14, thereby raising a selector dog or tap pet 15, mounted on the selector in theusual manner, into position to actuate denominational jacks 16 seriatim as the carriage is fed through the computing'zone as a result of the successive actuation of numeral-keys,
not shown. The denomination-selector 13 is mounted for swinging movement about a rod 17, extendlng across the carriage at the rear and carriedother'eby, and may be set at different positions along said rod by means of a tooth 18 on the selector which may be set in notches arranged at letterspace positions along a second rod 19. Ohviously, morethan one denomination-selector 13 may be used.
The denominational jacks 16, when operated, act through well-known -means, notv shown, to advance denominational bars 21 to bring index-pins 22 carried thereby into position beneath the setting bars23 of numeral-key-actuated linkages. lVhen the carriage is in a letter-space position in the computing zone, a corresponding denominational bar 2lwill be in position for setting of the pins 22thereon, and, upon actuation of a numeral-key, a. proper setting bar 23 will be depressed, and a pin 22, of the same value as the numeral-key depressed, will be depressed into set position. After the indexing of the digits of a number has been completed, a general operator 24 may be given a forward-and-rearward reciprocation by means of motor mechanism indicated in general by reference numeral 25. In the forward movement of the general operator, a bar 26 thereon will engage the lower ends of the depressed index-pins and actuate the corresponding denominational bars 21 to rotate the number-wheels of a corresponding register, not shown, in accordance with the index-pins 22 depressed.
To position the carriage 11 in the various computing zones, determined by denomination-selectors 13,- provision may be made of tabulating mechanism including a verticallymovable slide or counter-stop 27 which, when lifted by the depression of a tabulator-key, not shown, will be moved into the path of either an addition-stop 28 or a subtraction-stop 29 set ona notched bar 30, mounted on the carriage at its rear, at a letter-space position corresponding to that of a denominational selector 13. The computing zones are determined by the positions of the selectors 13 on the carriage, and the,states of the different zones are determined by addition-stops 28 or subtractionstops 29 positioned in accordance with the positions of the selectors 13. Preferably the machine is provided with more than one counter-stop 27, so that tabulation may be effected toany denominational position desired in a computing zone.
Upon movement of the carriage out of a computing zone in a letter-feed direction, the corresponding tabulator-stop, irrespective of its addition or subtraction character, will engage a tappet or dog 31 carried by a. motor-trip-lever 32 and rock the latter about its pivot 33. Such rocking of the lever 32 will bc transmitted through a vertical link 34 to a pivoted bail 35 at the lower part of the machine, and shift a link 36, pivoted 'at one end toone arm of the bail 35, from a position overlying the rear end of a lever 37. The lever 37 will then be swung about its pivot 38 by suitable means, such as a i s ring, not shown, and the forward end of .t e lever, which overlies a projection 39 on a vertical slide 40 guided by pins 41 enga ing in slots 42 therein, willdepress the slide and rock the lever 43, thereby lifting a pin 44 forming part of the motor-controlling means. Such lifting of the pin 44 will withdraw its lower end from the path of :1 lug 4., by which the motor mechanism is controlled, and the latter will be thrown into action, the motor mechanism acting through an arm 46 and a yoke 47 of the general operator 24 to actuate the latter. If desired, the slide 40 may be operated manually by means of a finger-piece 48 at the upper end thereof. The motor mechanism and controlling means therefor may be in general the same as that disclosed in the patent to R. F. Hoyt, No. 1,280,228, granted October 1, 1918.
Each subtraction-stop 29 may be provided with means whereby subtraction-setting of,
the computing mechanism may be controlled. For this purpose, a cam-bar 49 of substantially the same length as the computing zones is attached to the subtraction-stop 29 so as to extend therefrom in the letterfeed direction. As the carriage enters the subtraction zone, the forward end of the cambar 49 will engage a tappet or dog 50 carried by a subtraction-trip-lever 51 and rock the latter about its pivot 33 Wl1l(l1 lS the same as that of the motor-trip-lever 32. Such movement of the subtraction-trip-lever 51 will be transmitted by means of a link 52 and a pivoted bail 53, connected thereto, to a latch-member 54 to withdraw the latter from a position underlying the end of a rearwardly-extending arm 55 of a threearmed lever 56 mounted on a shaft 57., The lever 56 will then be turned in a clockwise direction, Figure 1, by a spring 58 attached to the upper end of an upwardly-extending arm 59 of the lever 56. Such movement of the'lever 56 will rock the shaft 57 and withdraw to ineffective position a hook 60 fixed on the shaft and normally engaging a notch 61 in a subtraction-bar 62. When released the subtraction-bar will be drawn rearwardly by a spring 63 attached thereto.
, A pin 64 on the subtraction-bar 62 extends through a slot in an arm 65 fixed on a rockshaft 66, and an arm 67 also fixed on the rock-shaft 66 is provided at its free end with a slot through which extends a pin 68 at the rear end of an arm 69 fixed on a plate 7O pivoted at its upper edge. The lower edge of the plate 70 projects into notches in shafts 71 of the key-actuated pin-setting mechanism, and, upon rearward movement of the subtraction-bar,'.the shafts 71 will be moved forwardly to change the conefi'ect subtraction by the well-known complemental method.
Upon the advance movement of the general operator 24, which will occur as the carriage 11 passes out of each computing zone in a letter-feed direction, bar 26 will engage a cam-surface on a forwardly-extending arm 72 of the three-armed lever 56, and turn thelatter in a clockwise direc ion against the action of the spring 58, so that the book 60 may again engage in the notch 61 of the subtraction-bar'62, which is also restored to normal position by engagement of the bar 26 of the general operator with a lug 73 on the subtraction-bar. As soon as the lever 56 is restored to its normal position, the latch-member 54, which has been released from the control of the cambar 49 of the subtraction-stop 29 which has just moved out of the computing zone, will move under the rear end of the arm of said lever 56 and the subtraction-bar 62 will be locked in its ineffective position.

(now Patent No. 1,456,660, dated May 1923) the tappet on the motor-trip-lever 1s beveled on both sides, so as to be actuated in either direction, and the movement of the tappet about its pivot, when engaged by a stop moving in a return direction is limited so as to render the tappet effective during such movement, and, at the same time, to enable a decrease of the camming angle of the left-hand inclined face of the tappet, so as to facilitate the actuation of the motor-trip-lever. In other words, the
camming angle of the left-hand edge ofthe tappet is too great when in normal position, but, upon a slight turning to the right to its limiting position, the camming angle is decreased to such an extent that the tappet and the supporting lever may be shifted by the stop without difficulty.
In the preferred form of the present invention, the tappet is similar in form to that disclosed in the Vickers application, and similarly mounted on its supporting lever. The motor trip-lever 32 comprises a main portion 74 and a parallel portion 75, which extends from the end of the lever farthest removed from the, link towards said link far enough to receive the pivot 33, the portions74 and 7 5 being spaced at the proper distance apart by suitable means. The tappet 31 is positioned between the two portions of the motor-trip-lever and held therein by means of a pivot 76 extend ing'through the tappet 31 and supported in the lever on opposite sides of the tappet. Figures 3 to 7, inclusive, furnishes a lefthand abutment for the tappet against which the tappet is held by means of a suitable spring 77, the movement of the tappet 31 in the opposite direction being limited by tappet to be readily cammed down by a tabulator-stop, but, upon engagement by the stop during a return movement of the,

According to the present invention, the tappet or dog 50 on the subtraction-triplever 51 is also so constructed and mounted on the subtractiontriplever 51 that it may be actuated by the cam-bar 49"of the subtraction-stop 29, irrespective of the direction of movement of the carriage. The tappet 50 may have right and left hand camfacesv81 and 82, respectively, and it may be pivoted in the subtract-ion-trip-lever 51 and limited in its movement therein in the same manner as the tappet 31 is supported in the motor-trip-lever.
In the movement of the carriage through a computing zone in the letter-feed direction. the addition-stop 28, shown at the left in Figures 3 to 7, inclusive, will pass idly by the tappet 50 of the subtraction-trip lever ;),,1,-but,ias the carriage passes out of the computing zone corresponding to the position of the addition-stop, the motortrip-lever 32 will be actuated and any number indexed during the movement of the carriage through the computing zone will be run into the register. As the carriage moves into a computing zone corresponding to the position of a subtraction-stop 29, the cam-bar 49 will actuate the subtractiontappet 50 and the subtraction-tripdcver 51 and set the machine for subtraction. The

As previously pointed out, the cam-bar 49 will actuate thesubtraetion-trip-lever when the carriage is backed'into the corresponding computing zone, and, if the subtraction-stop were formed in the usual manner, it would actuate the motor-trip-lever which might interfere with the setting for subtraction or even reset for addition.
At best, such actuation of the motor-triplever would be undesirable. To avoid this difiiculty, provision may be made whereby each subtraction-stop will be ineflt'ective on the motor trip-lever during the return movement of the carriage into the corresponding computing zone. As shown in Figure 2, the preferred form of subtraction-stop is formedof a left-hand side plate 83 and a right-hand side plate 84 adapted to fit over the toothed bar 30 and to enter notches between the teeth 85 on the lower side of the bar, so as to include three of said teeth, the plates 83 and 84 being held in proper position apart by a spacer 86 near the front part thereof and spacers 87 at the rear, the usual cam-bar 49 having a portion extending upwardly inside of the side plate 83 and secured to the stop. To render the subtraction-stop ineffective on the motor-trip-lever when moving in a-return direction, provision is made of a pawl or dog 88 mounted on a pivot 89 carried by a block 90 secured to the right-hand side plate 84, in any suitable manner, and the pawl. 88 is prevented from yielding when engaged by the motor-trip-tappet during a letter-feed movement of the carriage by means of a bar 91 extending across the slot in the plate 84 in which the pawl 88 is mounted, and the pawl 88 is normally urged to this limiting position by a spring 92 secured to the side plate 84 and engaging a portion of the pawl 88 above its pivot 89.
In Figure 5, the pawl 88 is shown as swung to an ineffective position, when engaged by the pawl or tappet on the motortrip-lever 32, so as to prevent actuation of the motor-trip-lever; and Figure 6 shows the actuation of the motor-trip-lever as the carriage is backed into the computingzone corresponding to the addltion-stop. Figure 7 shows the position of the various parts after the carriage 11 has been backed into the computing zone corresponding to the addition-stop or state-controller shown to the left of the subtraction-stops.
In the preferred form of the tappet 31, which is shown best in Figure 7, the righthand cam-face 7 9 is at the proper camming angle to enable actuation thereof by one of the stops 28 or 29 during theletter-feed movement of the carriage, the left-hand cam-face 80 lying at a comparatively steep angle, so as not to interfere with the release of'the tappet by the dog when passed by the latter in the letter-feed direction. Upon movement of the carriage in the return direction, however, the tappet will, upon engagement of the tappet 31 by an addition-stop, be swung to the rightsufliciently to bring its left-hand face 80 to the proper camming angle, and, as the distance of the point of the tappet from the pivot 76 is comparatively short, the properchange of angle of the inclined face or edge 80 will be effected in connection with a very small angular movement of the tappet 31, so that the difference in position of the point of the tappet, when cammed down by an additionstop movingin the letter-feeding direction or moving in the return direction, will be very slight, and conse uently the so-called lost motion will be reduced 'to a great exten-t.
The mechanism so far described provides means to insure a proper setting of the computing mechanism whenthe carriage enters a computing zone, except when the carriage enters an addition zone in the letter-feed direction] To insure proper setting of the computing mechanism, for this condition, provision may be made of means for tripping the motor as the carriage is moved in a letter-feed direction into the addition zone, thereby insuring the proper setting, since, if the machine were previously set for subtraction, the actuation of the general operator would result in a resetting for addition. To this end, each addition-stop 28 may be provided with a bar 93 extending to the left therefrom, and with a hinged tappet or dog 94 extending substantially at right angles thereto and held against a stop 95 on the bar 93 by means of a spring 96, so that the tappet 94, when it engages the tappet 31 during the letter-feed movement of the carriage, will actuate the motor-tripmechanism, and, upon engagement of the tappet 31 by the tappet or dog 94 during a return movement of the carriage, the dog 94 will yield and pass the tappet 31 without actuating the same.
It will-be seen that, according to the present invention, the proper setting of the computing mechanism in either an addition or a subtraction zone is insured, irrespective of the direction of movement of the earriage in entering any of the zones.

An addition state-controller to be set on the carriage of a combined typewriting and computing machine in accordance with the computing zone determined by the latter, said machine having mechanism for indexing numbers digit by digit, a general operator for effecting computation of num-- bers so indexed, subtraction-setting means actuable by the carriage and resettable by the general operator, and carriage-controlled motor mechanism for actuating'the general operator, said addition state-controller comprising a body-portion settable on a rack bar on the rear of the carriage in accordance with the position of an addition zone, and provided with a portion to actuate the motor mechanism irrespective of the directionof movement of the carriage, an extension, of substantially the length of the addition zone, attached to said body-portion, and a dog mounted on said extension at its end, so as to actuate the motor mechanism when the carriage enters the addition zone in the letterfeed direction, and to yield and to move to ineffective position when the carriage is backed out of the addition zone.
15; A subtraction state-controller to be set on the carriage of a combined typewriting and computing machine in accordance with the computing zone determined by the latter, said machine having mechanism for indexing numbers digit by digit, a general operator for effecting computation of numbers so indexed, subtraction-setting means actuable by the carriage irrespective of the direction of movement of the carriage and resettable by the general operator, and general-operatoractuating motor mechanism actuable by the carriage irrespective of the direction of movement of the latter, said subtraction state-controller comprising a body-portion settable on a rack bar on the rear of the carriage in accordance with the position .of a subtraction zone, and provided with a motormechanism-actuating dog mounted on said body-portion, so as to be effective during the movement of the carriage in the letter-feed direction, but to be swung to ineifective position during movement of the carriage in the opposite direction, and an extension, of substantially the length of the computing zone, to actuate the subtraction-setting means, said extension being effective as long as the carriage is in the subtraction zone.
16. A set of state-controllers adapted to be supported in letter-space positions along the carriage of a combined typewriting and computing machine, comprising a subtraction state-controller having a portion to actuate a trip to set the machine for subtraction when the carriage passes into a corresponding zone in either direction, and a dog yieldable to ineffective position when the carriage is backed into the subtraction zone, but effective upon movement of the carriage out of the zone in the letter-feed direction to actuate a motor-trip to cause actuation of a general operator and the consequent resetting of the machine to the state of addition, and an addition state-controller having a fixed portion to actuate the motor-trip as the carriage passes out of a corresponding zone in the letter-feed direction, or is. backed into the same, and a dog spaced at the Width of the zone from the fixed portion yieldable to ineffective position when engaged by the motor-"trip during a backing movement of the carriage, but effective in the letter-feed movement of the carriage into the zone to actuate the motor-trip.
