T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE A. STEINER, a citizen of the United States, resident of Salt Lake City, county of Salt Lake, State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roller-Towel Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.

' The object of my invention is to provide a cabinet of simple, inexpensive construction and one which will'allow the convenient removal of the roll with the soiled towel thereon and the insertion of the roll with the clean towel. r I

Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line In the. drawing, 2 represents the cabinet, made of suitable material, preferably wood, and mounted inany suitable manner in the toilet room, or wherever the'cabinet may be placed. The cabinet is open at the top and bottom and has a door3 in its front wall, held in place by a button 4: and provided withla suitable mirror 5. When this door is opened,convenient access may be had to the interior of the cabinet. The side walls of the cabinet are provided with vertical ,slots 6 and? extending'therein to a point near the lower end of the cabinet. In the bottom of these slots I arrange the clean towel roll 8 having the shaft 9 to turn freely within the slots and resting on the lower ends thereof. This roll is preferably covered by a material 10, such as sand paper, which has the function of gripping the -towel andpreventing it from slipping on the roll.

6 and 7 and slidable therein and at one end a chain connection 16 is provided between the shafts 15 and 14 by means of which the shaft 14 is driven at the same speed asthe shaft 15, a dog 17 being mounted'between the shafts to prevent backward movement of the drive sprockets and chain. These rolls 12 and 13 are of the same size and each is preferably provided with a roughened surface consisting preferably of sand paper, as described with reference to' the roll 8, and a space is provided between the rolls 12 and 13 and they are held at all 'times in spaced parallel relation and out of contact with .eachother.

The outer end of the hub has a flange 19 thereon provided with acam groove 20 to receive a lug 21 of a crank arm 22 having a slot 23 to receive the end of the shaft 15. The lug 21 follows the cam groove 20 when the crankis adjusted therein on the shaft and a stop is provided in the groove for checking the movement of the crank at the end of each revolution. I do not show this device or claim it in detail herein, as it is described and claimed in a companion application, Serial-No, 213 152, filed Jan. 22, 1918, now matured into Tatent No. 1,287,786, dated Dec. 17, 1918..

The frame 11 and the roll 12 rest by gravity upon the roll 8 andthe toweling wound therein and the roll 25 rest by gravity upon the roll 13 and as theroll 12 is positively driven fromthe roll 13 it follows that when the shaft'15 is revolvedeither by the operation of the crank or by the pull of the user on the clean towel that all the rolls will the roll 25. This cross bar is so positioned in the cabinet that it will hold the soiled portion of the towel out of contact with the clean towel roll in the bottom of the cabinet, an important feature of this invention being the arrangement of the rolls in such a manner that any contamination of the clean portion of the towel through contact with the soiled portion is positively prevented. The cabinet is therefore clean and sanitary under all conditions.

I may provide a similar roll at the lower end of the cabinet having the same function as the roll 27 at the top and which I will designate by the same reference numeral. This cabinet is extremely simple in construction and provides an inexpensive, convenient means for feeding the clean towel roll and winding the soiled towel roll so that the attendant is only required to lift the rolls out of the slot in the cabinet, place a roll filled with clean toweling in the bottom of the slots, then put the frame containing the two parallel measuring or feed rolls in the slots above the clean towel roll, pass the free end of the clean towel up through the rear of the cabinet, wind up a few turns on the roll at the top, then place this roll in the slots and the cabinet is ready for use. When the towel has been all transferred from the lower or clean towel roll to the upper or soiled towel roll, the rolls are all removed from the slots, the soiled towel taken to the laundry, a clean roll of toweling placed in the bottom of the slots and the operation repeated.

In the use of the above described towel cabinet, I have noted the following advantages. It makes the unwinding of the clean towel and the winding up of the soiled portion thereof more positive. It provides a greater air space between the clean and soiled portions of the toweling that is being used by the customer and therefore is better for sanitary reasons. It also provides a greater distance between the clean and soiled portions, so that the soiled section, which is often twisted, will have a better chance to become straightened before being wound up on the soiled towel roll. The manufacture of the cabinet is cheapened, its size is decreased and the operation is considerably simplified. V

I claim as my invention:

1. A roller towel cabinet comprising a casing provided with vertical guideways, a clean towel roll slidable in said guideways, a soiled towel roll slidable in said guideways,

feed rolls mounted between said towel rolls them, said soiledtowel roll resting by grav ity upon its feed roll and said clean towel feed roll resting by gravity upon the clean towel roll and being further held thereon by the weight of the other rolls, revolution of said clean towel feed roll unwinding the clean towel from its roll and winding the soiled portion of the towel upon its roll.

2. A towel cabinet having guide ways therein, a clean towel roll mounted in said guideways, a soiled towel roll also mounted in said gu-ideways, a frame interposed between said rolls and having freedom of vertical movement, feed rolls journaled in said frame and having a driving connection between them, one of said feed rolls engaging the clean towel and resting by gravity thereon, the other feed roll contacting with the soiled towel roll, revolution of said clean towel feed roll delivering the clean towel from one roll and synchronously winding the soiled towel on the other roll.

.3. A towel cabinet comprising a casing, a clean towel roll journaled therein, a soiled towel roll also journaled in said casing, feed rolls for said clean and soiled towel rolls respectively and contacting with the towel thereon, said feed rolls being of the same diameter and having a driving connection between them for revolving said clean and soiled towel rolls synchronously, and said feed rolls and soiled towel roll resting by gravity upon said clean towel roll the feed roll for the soiled towel roll being out of contact with the clean towel roll and with the clean portion of the towel.

4. A towel cabinet comprising a casing, a clean towel roll journaled therein, a soiled towel roll also journaled in said casing, feed rolls for said clean and soiled towel rolls and contacting with the towel thereon respectively, said feed rolls having a driving connection between them,'and means for unwindingthe towel from the clean roll and winding up a corresponding length of the towel on said soiledroll, and said feed rolls and soiled towel roll resting by gravity upon said clean towel roll the feed roll for the soiled towel roll contacting only with the soiled portion of the towel and the soiled tween them for simultaneous operation thereof and of said'soiled and clean towel rolls, said cabinet being open at the bottom and a loop of the clean towel depending through and below said opening, and guides in said casing for directing the soiled towel to its roll and preventing contact thereof with the clean portion of the towel, said feed rolls resting by gravity upon the lower towel ro 6. A towel cabinet comprising a casing, a clean towel roll in the lower portion of said casing opposite "an opening therein-through which the user may grasp and pull aclean portion of the towel, a soiled towel roll in the upper portion of said casing to receive the towel as used, feed rolls mounted to contact by gravity with said clean and soiled towel rolls and having a driving connection between them for operating one feed roll, and the soiled towel roll contacting therewith synchronously with the movement of the other towel roll and its feed roll.

7. A towel cabinet comprising a casing having guideways therein, a soiled towelroll and a clean towel roll movable in said guideways, feed rolls for said soiled and clean towel rolls and mounted between said towel rolls to contact thereweith respectively, said feed rolls being supported by the lowertowel roll and having a driving connection between them for simultaneous operation thereof and of said soiled and clean towel rolls, said cabinet having an opening through which a loop of the towel extends and guides in said casing for directing the soiled towel to its roll and preventing contact thereof with the clean oprtion of the towel.

8. A towel cabinet, comprising a casing, a

clean'towel roll journaled therein, a soiled towel roll also journaled in said casing, feed rolls for said clean and soiled towel rolls and contacting with the towels thereon respectively, said feed rolls having a driving connection between them and means for unwind ing the towel from the clean'towel roll and winding up a corresponding length of the towel on said soiled towel roll, the feed roll for the soiled towel roll contacting only with the soiled portion of the towel and the soiled towel roll, and the feed roll for the clean towel roll contacting only with the clean towel roll and the clean portion of the towel,

and the soiled towel roll contacting therewith synchronously with the movement of the other towel roll and its feed roll, and means preventing contact of the clean por tion of the towel with the soiled portion thereof. v

12. A towel cabinet comprising a casing, clean and soiled towel-rolls mounted therein, said casing having an opening in its lower part'through which the user may grasp and pull the clean towel, feed rolls mountedto contact by gravity respectively with said clean and soiled towelrolls, and having a driving connection between them for operating the soiled towel feed roll to wind up the soiled'towel synchronously with the pull of the user on the clean portion of the towel to operate its feed roll.

13. A towel cabinet comprising a casing,

clean and soiled towel rolls mounted therein, said casing having an opening in its lower' part through which theuser may grasp and pull the clean towel, feed rolls mounted to contact by gravity respectively with sai clean and soiled towel rolls, and having'a driving connection between them for operating the soiled towel feed roll to wind up the soled towel synchronously with the pull of the user on the clean portion of the towel to operate its feed roll, and means preventing contact of the clean portion of the towel with the soiled portion thereof.

14. A towel cabinet comprising a casing having guideways therein, asoiled towel roll and a clean towel roll movable in said guideways, a frame mounted for vertical movement between said rolls, feed rolls mounted in said frame, and contacting respectively with said clean towel rolland said soiled towel roll for-driving them simultaneously, a driving connection between said feed rolls for simultaneous movement thereof, the loop of towel from the clean towel roll being extended between the roll and the back of the cabinet to the soiled towel roll in the top thereof and a guiding means in the rear of the soiled towel roll and between which and theback of the cabinet the towel is fed. a

15. A towel cabinet comprising a casing having guideways therein, a soiled towel roll and a clean towel roll movable in said respectively with said clean towel roll and said soiled towel roll for driving them simultaneously, a loop of towel from the clean towel roll being extended between said roll and the back of the cabinet to the soiled towel roll, and a guiding means in the rear of the soiled towel roll and between which and the wall of the cabinet the towel is fed.

16. A towel cabinet comprising a casing, a clean towel roll in the lower portion of said casing through which the user may grasp and pull a clean portion ,of the towel, a soiled towel roll in the upper portion of said casing to receive the towel as used, feed rolls mounted to contact with said clean and soiled towel rolls and having a driving connection between them for operating one feed roll and the towel roll contacting therewith synchronously with the movement of the other towel roll and its feed roll.

17. A towel cabinet comprising a casing, clean and soiled towel rolls mounted therein, feed rolls for contact respectively with the clean and soiled portion of the towel, a driving connection between said feed rolls for simultaneous movement therewith, a loop of the clean towel depending at the front of said casing and extending to the rear of the clean towel roll, and guide means between which and the rear of said casing the soiled portion of the towel is fed and guided to said soiled towel roll.

18. A. towel cabinet comprising a casing, a clean towel roll in the lower part of said casing from which a loop of clean towel depends, within reach of the user, a soiled towel roll in the upper part of said casing to which the soiled towel is guided between said clean roll and the rear of said casing, feeding means acted on by one roll and a feeding means for the other roll, said feeding means being inter-geared to cause the same amount of surface movement of the rolls, whereby the pull of the user on the clean towel to unwind it from its roll will impart a similar movement to the soiled roll to wind the towel thereon.

19. A towel and holder comprising i a lower clean towel roll from which a loop of clean towel depends, within reach of the user, an upper soiled towel roll to which the soiled towel is guided, and feeding means acted on by one roll and a feeding means for the other roll, said feeding means being inter-geared to cause the same amount of surface movement of the rolls, whereby the pull of the user on the clean towel to unwind it from the roll will impart a similar movement to the soiled roll to wind the towel thereon.

20. A towel holder, comprising a clean towel support from which a loop of clean towel depends and extends within the holder down through its bottom, a soiled towel roll to which the soiled towel is guided, feeding means for the clean and soiled towel separated so as to prevent infection from the soiled to the clean towel, said feeding nieans having driving connections between them to cause the same amount of surface movement of the towel rolls, whereby the pull of the user on the clean towel to unwind it from the roll will impart a similar movement to the soiled towel roll to wind the towel thereon, and guide means within the holder preventing the soiled portion of the towel from contacting with the clean portion thereof:
