LAUNDRY DEVICE.
I Application filed October 27, 1920. SerialNo. {$19,912.
new and useful Improvement in Laundry Devices, of which the following is a specification. 7
My invention relatesto improvements in laundry devices. a
The object of my invention is to provide a laundry device which is simple in construction, cheap to make, durable, not liable to get out of order, and with which clothes may be quickly and thoroughly cleansed and rinsed and'with a minimum amount of labor.
My invention provides further a novel clothes pounder.
My invention provides still further a clothes pounder having a reversible handle and perforate body combined with novel means for bracing the handle and guarding against the clothes clogging the perforations in the body.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanyingdrawing which illustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved laundry device.
Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the clothes pounder.
Fig. 3 is across section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. i
F 4 and Fig. 5 are respectively plan views of the two guard members, shown de tached.
Fig. 6is a vertical sectional view of the laundry device with the body shown in a position the reverse of that shown in Figs. 1 and 3. i
Fig. 7 is a plan view of a pounder embodying my improvements shown fitted in a. circular clothes receptacle.
Similar reference characters designate similar parts'in the different views.
Referring particularly tothe first six figures, l designates an vordinary wash boiler of the usual oblong form.
2 designates the pounder body which is preferably of concave-convex form and which also is preferably substantially fitted in and vertically reciprocative in the boiler Specification of Letters Batent; P fljgnted Aug, 15,
l. The body 2 is' provided with openings or perforations 3thro ugh which the water in the boiler is forced when the body is re-.
ciprocated. a Centrally mounted in the body is a vertireceivetherein the'lower end of a handle 5 c0 cal member comprising, preferably, a socket. member 4 either end'of which is adapted to which'may be provided with. two transverse holes 6 and 7 either of which is adapted to receive therethrough a bolt 8 which is also adapted to be extended through a transverse hole provided in the socket member 4 at the outer side of the convex side of the body 2. The bolt 8 is provided with a nut 9 arranged to bear against the socketmember 4 for releasably securing the 'bolt in its operative position in the handle and socket member.
For securely anchoring the socket member 4 to the body-2,- and also for keeping the clothes from clogging the perforations .3 in the body, I provide a suitable guard which may comprise two crossed brace members 10 and 11 the ends of which are attached to the body 2 at the edge thereof. The members 10 and 11 each encircle the inner end of the socket member to which the members are attached in any suitable manner, as by soldering. The members 10 and 11 may be flat strips, as shown, each having a central hole through which the socket member is inserted.
In the operation of my invention, the
body 2 is preferably first/mounted in the boiler 1 with the convex side up, as shown in Fig. 1., in which position, the handle 5 is mounted in the socket member 4 with the bolt 8 in the hole 6. When the handle and body 2 are vertically reciprocated in the boiler the clothes will be compressed adjacent to the outer edges of the body and the water will be forced outwardly through the perforations 3 as the body '2 moves downserted into the other end of the socket menu-- ber l, as shown in Fig. 6, the bolt 8. being placed in the hole .7 of the handle. The body 2 will now be reversed in position with wardly., By this manner of use of the respect to the handle 5. The body 2 is then,
.while in this reverse position, inserted into theboiler l and reciproeated' by means of the handle The convex side of the body 2 being now on the under side and next to erence to the form shown in the other figures, both in construction and mode of operation. p
I do not limit my invention to the structures shown and described, as many modifications, within the scope of the appended claim, may be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
hat I claim is In a laundry device, a clothes pounder having a perforate concavo-convex body, a socket member attached at one end to said body, a guard attached to the body and extending across the concave side of the body and attached to and serving as a brace for the other end of the socket member, and a handle adapted to be inserted into either end of the socket member and having means for being releasably attached to the socket member, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
