The object of my invention is the construction of van easily-removable tool -handle particularly adapted for picks, adzes, and such tools, where a portion of the head or working part projects, in either direction, beyond the line of the handle; and the invention therein consists in the construction and combination of the means employed for securing the handle to the tool, so that, `when in use, it shall b e firmly and rigidly attached to said tool, and be, at the same time, capable of ready removal therefrom. i

In order to better understand my invention, so that persons skilled in the particular art may be enabled to construct the same,

' I proceed to describe the same, taking, for

convenience, a pick, and having reference to the drawings making a part of this speciication, in which- Figure l is a plan view of my device; Fig.

Like letters of like kind denote similar parts in each figure.

In the drawings, A represents the head or working portion of a pick of usual construction, except that ou the inner side, or that whiehcomes next to the handle, it is recessed or cut away, which recess is shown at a. Upon and around the head of the handle B is a metallic covering strap, C, extending down the sides of the handle, and secured to the same in any proper manner. That part of the coveringstrap which forms the head of the handle projects beyond the wooden part of the same, leaving an opening, b, and is rectangular in outline, and of a size which enables it to mit closely into the recess a in the tool. Within this opening/b, and to the inner side of the head of the covering strap C, is secured a metallic block, D, having a groove, c, on its under side; and, next in order below this, is another metallic block, E, having a groove, d, in its upper side, both of said grooves being of a size to receive atapering key, f, which passes between the blocks D and E. This block E has a transverse rib,

Ve, across its bottom, with dependent lockinglips f' at each end, and has a length suiicient to enable such lips, in use, to lock into the holding strap or clip, not yet described. Next in order to the block last described is the block G, preferably of wood or other elastic material, which rests upon the wooden portion of the handle. Openings g through the strap C, on either; side thereof, complete the description of this part of my device.

The holding strap or clip H, of suitable material, passes over the head or working portion of the tool, and down over the sides of the handle not covered by the strap G, and closes up the opening b; and has itself', on either side, openings h, through which the lips f', before described, pass, and lock said strap on either side.

In putting together my device, the blocks E and G, being placed in the opening b, and the holding strap or clip H being sprung over the lips f', the head Ais inserted between the strap H and the end of the strap C until the recess aits upon the end of the strap G, when the key f is inserted through the openings g, and all the parts are firmly bound together. To take them apart is simply reversing the manner just described. y

I am aware that a patent was granted March 29, 1859, to J. E. Emerson for a tool-handle which has ageneral resemblance to mine, but differs in important particulars. handle the clip is fitted into a recess 4on the outside of the tool, thereby brin ging the strain or shock, in use, upon the clip. It is, furthermore, believed that the recess upon the outside tends to weaken the tool much more than the recess upon the inside, as I have it. What I do claim, however, as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

`1. The combination of the clip H, the tool A, provided with a recess, a, uponits inner side, and the strap G having its head constructed to t into said recess, substantially as described and shown.

2. The combination of the clip H, the tool A, the strap G and the blocks G and E, the latter provided With the lips f', substantially as described and shown.
