IMPROVEMENT IN COTTON-BALE TIES.

Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a sectional view of a cotton-bale with my tie attached. Fig. 2 is a top View of my cotton-bale tie. Fig. 3 is a sectional, and Fig. 4 a detail, view of the same.

This invention has relation to tie-plates for cotton-bales; and -it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of a pair of slotted and hooked plates, having the same form and adapted to engage with each other in such a mannerA as 'to form a double look, with one of the tongues or hooks bent under the catch-har of the opposite plate between said plate and the bale.

In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the bale, whether of cotton, hay, or other substance. passing around the bale and having its ends passed through the slots of the tie-p1ates, and bent backward under the rear bar et of each plate. The ends are thus arranged to be pressed between said bars and the substance of the bale. C G indicate the tie-plates, similar to each other in form, and provided each with a slot, b, and a tongue, c, the slot b, in each case, being sufliciently broad for the reception of the tongue or hook c of the opposite plate. Each plate is constructed with a transverse catch-bar, d, from the middle portion of which the hook c projects, a transverse strapbar, e, opposite said catch-bar, and two side bars, g, connecting the catch bar with the B indicates the iron strap,

Onthe same side of each side bar, with the hook c, is preferably arranged a projection, corrugation, or stop, c, at a suitable distance from the end of the plate to prevent the catch-bar of the opposite plate, when in position, from slipping backward out ofv engagement. The hook or tongue c is bent backward parallel with the catch-bar, and at a distance therefrom about equal to the thickness thereof.

The strap having been secured to the strap bar by bending its ends through the plate-slot and under said bar, as above described, the plates, being reversed in position with refer-` ence.` to each other, are brought togetherand interlocked, the tongue of each engaging with the catch-bar of the opposite plate. In this manner a double lock is formed, either tongue being suflicient to hold the strap in c'ase off fracture of the other. The under tongue being 'pressed against the bale is scarcely liable to displacement or accidental fracture, and is very secure. Sometimes the tongue may bev formed on the inside edge of the catch-bar, saving material.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A A pair of `tie-plates, each consisting of a catch-bar, d, and a strap-bar, e, connected at their ends by side bars g surrounding a slot, b, and having extending from the catch-bar, on opposite sides, a tongue or hook, c, adapted toengage with the catch-bar of the opposite plate, forming a double lock, as shown and described.
