A TTOR/l EV8 GOTTFRID IN'GELSON', OF INDIANA HARBOR, INDIANA.
UNIVERSAL CONCAVE SHAVE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1922.
Application filed November 6, 1920. Serial No. 422,238.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GoT'rrRn) INoEpsoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Indiana Harbor, in the county of Lake the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and-claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a novel form of a shave having a cutting blade adapted for trimming and finishing concave and curved surfaces.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described having a handle normally positioned at right angles to the cutting blade and being arranged for movement relative the cutting blade to occasion the position of the latter at an angle to the handle greater or less than a right angle, as desired.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described that has means for guiding the shavings cut from the work away from the cutting blade and out of position to interfere with the further operation of the device.
A further-object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described that is simple in construction, thoroughly effective for the purpose intended, and capable of being produced in large quantitles at a relatively .low manufacturing cost.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device,
Figure 2 is a section along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1,
Figure 3 is a section through a portion of the device,
Figure 4 is a view of the cutting blade of the device.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a blade holder comprising a body portion 1 having the form .of a plate formed integrally with a rearwardly extending hemispherical socket 2 that is positioned intermediate the side edges of the blade holder and adjacent of the body portion 1.
to the upper edge thereof. The forward face of the socket 2 is relatively raised or offset beyond the plane of the forward part The body portion 1 is formed with rearward extensions 3-3 along its side edges and with a pair of openings 4-4 located adjacent to the side edges thereof, as clearly shown in Figure 2. Cap screws 5-5 are projected through the open ings 44 and through slots 66 in a blade 7 into engagement with threaded openings 8-8 in a cap plate 9, whereby the blade 7 is held clamped between the rear part of the blade holder and the cap plate 9 thereby providing a gap 25 between portions of the adjacent sides of the body portion 1 and the blade 7, as clearly shown in the drawings.
The blade 7, it will be noted, is formed with a curved cutting edge 10 beveled at 10. The edge of the body portion 1 projects beyond the cutting edge of the blade 7 and is curved to conform with the contour of the latter. The body portion 1 is fashioned with its edge beveled at 11 and 12 along both sides thereof, the angle of the bevel 11 to the body portion being the same as the angle of the bevel 10' to the blade. The body portion 1 is provided with an aperture 13 extending along the beveled curved edge thereof for a purpose which will be hereinafter set forth. The hemispherical head 14 of a threaded shank 17 having a non-circular neck 15 is disposed within the hemispherical socket 2, the non-circular portion 15 extending through a slot 16 in the wall of the socket and the threaded shank 17 being adapted for engagement with a threaded socket 18 in a handle 19. The slot 16 extends at right angles to a plane intersecting the side walls of the body portion, whereby the handle 19 may be swung about on the head 14 as a pivot toward or away from the beveled edge portion of the body portion. The handle 20 has its proximal end reduced at 20 and a ferrule 21 is fitted thereon. The forrule 21 is formed integrally with a ferrule nut 22 having a threaded bore 23 adapted for engagement with the threaded shank 17 adjacent to the non-circular neck portion 15 thereof. The ferrule nut 22 has its end contiguous to the socket 2 concaved at 2-4 to conform with the contour of the socket, whereby the handle 19 can be secured in adjusted position relative to the socket 2 and therefore with res ect to the body portion 1, by turning the andle 19 until the con- 1 1 2. The device is operated in the manner caved end portion 2A of the ferrule nut 22 tightly en ages the socket 2. The engagement of t e non-circular neck 1901131011 15 with the walls of the slot 16 prevents lateral oscillation of the handle 19 and the latter is maintained in adjusted position by the.
cap screws 5-5 are operated to permit ad-v justment'of the blade 7 relative to the body portion 1, to vary the depth of the cut, as
required. In actual practice, the blade 7 is arranged with its cutting edg'elO sli htly in advance of the adjacent edge 0 the beveled portion 11 and to the rear of the edge of the body portionv 1, that is to say, to the rear of the line of juncture of the beveled. portion 11 with the beveled portion suggested by its construction to ,finish and trim concaved, and curved surfaces in vari- "ous kinds of work being articularly adapted for use in finishing. ca inets and the like. The handle 19 is grasped and drawn toward the operator, the beveled, portion 11 of the body ortion 1 sliding upon the work. Since the odly portion 1 is beveled at 11 at .the same ang e as the blade 7 is beveled at 10' and the edge thereof is positioned in advance of the ed 'e of the blade, it will be manifest that shavings uniform in thickness will be cut from the work, the thickness of the shavingsv being determined by the adjustment of the edge of the blade with res ect to the edge of the body portion 1. he body portion 1 therefore also serves as a guard. The shavings enter the gap between the blade 7 and the adjacent face of the body portion 1 and are guided throu h the, aperture 13 out of the path of t e blade, so as to not interfere with the continued operation of the device. The handley19 may be swung in a plane at right angles to the plane inter-.
secting the sides of the blade 7 and ma be secured in adjusted position in the manner described. Consequently, the device is available for use in finishmgor shaping work that is inaccessible to a device having a handle rigidly positioned at a certain angle to its blade and as a result, the S00 e of operation for which the device is suitab e is enlarged;
. Obviously, a circular opening (not shown)- substantia ly flat bod relatively raised the other of which is may be rovided in the socket 2 instead of the s 0t 16, wherefore the handle 19 would have a universal movement relative the blade instead of being capable of movement in' one plane as is the device illustrated in the drawings.
ll claimr I 1. A device of the character described comprisin a blade holder consisting of a portion having a beveled rear edge. an a relatively raised portion on its face adjacent to its rearedge, a blade having a cutting edge beveled at the same angle as the rear edge ofthe body portion and positioned to the rear of the latter, and means for clamping the blade to the relatively raised portion, whereby a gap is provided between the face of the bod portion and the adjacent side of j.
the bla e.
2. A device of the character described comprisin a blade holder consisting of a substantia ly fiat body portion having a beveled rear edge and a beveled forward edge, an aperture therethrough having a wall comprising two beveled edges, one of which is parallel to said rear edge and the other parallel to said forward edge, and a ortion on its face adjacent to its rear e ge, a blade having a cutting edge beveled at the same angle as the rear edge of the body portion and posi-' tioned to the rear of the latter, and means for clamping the blade to the relatively raised portion, whereby a gap is provided between the face of the body po'rtionand the adjacent side of the blade.
3. A device of the character described comprising, a blade holder consisting of a substantially fiat body portion having a beveled rear edge and a beveled forward ed e, an aperture therethrough having a wal comprisin two beveled edges, one of which is parafiel to said reared e and blade having a cutting edge beveled at parallel to said for-J not the .same angle as the rear edge of the body portion and positioned to the rear of the latter,- means for clamping the blade to the" relatively raised portion, whereby agap is provided between the face of the body portion and the adjacent side of the blade,
and a handle attached to the'blade holder.
