BUCKET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug 3 822.
Application filed August 10, 1920. Serial No. 402,602.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN Gnirrirris, a subject of the King of England, residing at Brook Cottage, Maghull, near Liverpool, in the county of Lancaster, England, plumber, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in or Relating to Buckets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to metal buckets, but more particularly those used for domestic purposes in households, and the like, which buckets frequently become useless through the wearing away and consequent erforation or holing of the bottom plate.
My invent-ion has for its object to prolong the life of such a bucket in the event of perforation or holing of the original bottom plate, and broadly consists in the provision therein in a liquid tight manner of a new or false bottom.
According to a preferred mode of carry ing out my invention, I provide a circular plate or disc of galvanized sheet iron, or other suitable metal, on the periphery whereof is formed an upstanding wall of such shape or configuration as to retain a packing or joint-making ring of india rub-- ber, asbestos, or other suitable joint-making material disposed around same, and whereby a liquid tight joint is made with the inner wall of a bucket, on said false bottom being positioned therein.
I will further describe my invention with the aid of the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings, which illustrate, by way of example only, one, mode of embodying same.
In said drawings 1- Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of a bucket, provided with a false bottom.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section and Fig. 3 a plan of the false bottom prior to fitment, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section of the bottom drawn to an enlarged scale as compared with the other views.
a generally designates a bucket, a representing a broken bottom plate. I) is the false bottom which comprises a circular plate or disc of galvanized sheet iron, and an upstanding wall which is annularly recessed at c and on which is formed an outstanding peripheral lip 63.
c is a joint making ring of asbestos or the like, disposed in said annular wall recess of the bottom.
In use, said false bottom, which is of appropriate diameter, is placed in the bucket to be repaired, and due to the customary taperof the interior wall is supported thereby, then, on downward pressure being applied thereto, it becomes firmly fixed in position, the packing ring-which is positively prevented from upward displacement by said lip (Z-making a liquid tight joint with the wall of the bucket including any projecting portion or portions due to seaming or otherwise.
Said bottom piece when positioned (which positioning may be effected by an unskilled person) cannot become accidentally displaced, and thus the longevity of the bucket is enhanced.
The false bottoms will, of course, be of various diameters in order to suit buckets of different sizes.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A false bottom for a bucket comprising a disk having a peripheral flange provided with a recess, and a packing ring seated in said recess.
2. A structure as in claim 1, in which the wall is provided with an exterior recess containing a packing ring.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
