Ill/VENTOR Arrow/1? sire AUGUST EDWIN CARLBERG, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO WALDEN- WORCESTER, INC, 015 WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSA- CHUSETTS.
ATTACHMENT FOR WRENCHES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 1, 1922.
Application filed June 16, 1920. Serial No. 389,271.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST EDWIN CARL- ily and quickly applied to a wrench of any' suitable type to permit bolts and nuts to be assembled or separated.
The invention further has for its object to provide a wrench attachment adapted to be secured to a socketwrench and having a nut or bolt holding socket adapted to register with the socket of the wrench.
Further objects of the invention are to provide an attachment of this, character which is simple in construction, efficlent 1n operation, and economical to manufacture.
Other objects will in part be obv ous and in part be pointed out hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawing, forming part of this application, wherein I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention for the purpose of illustrating the principle thereof,
Figure 1 is an elevation showing the attachment applied to a socket wrench;
.Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of the attachment;
Fig. 3 is a plan view thereof, the caps being removed and Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line IV-IV of Fig. 2, the cap being re moved.
Referring to the drawing, the attachment is shown as including a yoke shaped frame comprising a rod 1 having an upwardly bent end 2 carrying a socket member 3 having a socket 4: formed in its inner end. As shown, the end of the upturned portion 2 extends within a recess 5 formed in the socket member which is secured in place by a pin 6 positioned within registering holes formed in the socket member and in the up- Y turned end portion of the rod 1. Mounted upon the upper end of the support, serves to hold the wrench in position within the recess.
Slidingly supported within a hole extend- 1ng through the support 8 is a rod 11 preferably having a head 12 at its outer end to limit the inward movement of the rod. A block 13, secured to the inner end of the rod by a pin 14 has a U-shaped recess 15 formed in its upper end to receive the shank of a wrench. A knurled cap 16 is in threaded engagement with the upper end of the block and serves to hold the wrench in place.
The U-shaped recesses 9 and 15, in the support 8 and block 13, which are of the same size and shape, are in register with one another and withthe socket 1 in the socket member 3. Surrounding'the rod 11 is a coil spring 17 having its ends engaging the support 8 and the block 13 and serving to hold the rod normally in its innermost position.
Referring to Fig. 1 the attachment is shown, for purposes of illustration, as being applied to the shank of a socket wrench 18 of the speed type, but it will of course, be understood that'the attachment may be used in connection with anyother suitable type of Wrench. 'Io affix the attachment to the wrench it is merely necessary to remove the knurled caps 10 and 16 from the support 8 and block 13 and place the shank of the wrench within the U-shaped recesses 9 and 15 after which the caps are replaced to hold the shank of the wrench seated within the curved inner ends of the grooves in such a manner that the wrench may be freely rotated with respect to the attachment.
In use, as shown in Fig. l, the head of the bolt 19 is held within the socket 4 of the socket member 3 and the nut 20 is received within the socket of the wrench, whereupon the nut and bolt may be assembled or separated depending upon the direction of rotation of the wrench, the
and lifting the wrench from the U-shaped recesses.
By providing attachment, such "as hereinabove shown and described, which can be readily applied to an ordinary socket wrench, the necessity of having" a "special wrench for assembling or separating bolts and nuts is avoided and when the attachment is not in use the wrench may be employed in the usual manner.
While the attachment is adapted for use "with many types of socket wrenches, it is particularly adapted for use in connection with wrenches of this type in which the socket is permanently secured to the shank. 'While I have illustrated and described my invention 'in connection with a preferred embodiment "thereof, it will be understood that I donot intend to limit myself to the specific embodiment shown, but that I intend I to cover my invention broadly in whatever 'form its principles may be employed\ Having thus described my invention, 1
