ASH PAN.
Application filed February I improvements in ash pans and more particularly to an ash pan adapted for use in or laces and the like, the main object of the present invention being the provision of an ash pan which can be quickly and readily fitted into a fireplace so that portions of the pan will fit beneath the grate for receiving the ashes and other waste material from the main portion of the fireplace.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an ash tray, which can be constructed for ready application to various types of fireplaces so that a portion of the pan will be disposed beneath the grate of the fireplace for catching the ashes etc, and the remaining portion of the pan :be disposed in front of the fireplace with a movable cover whereby the cover may be moved to permit the accumulation of ashes directly beneath the grate to be moved forwardly into the remaining portion of the pan so that the entire receptacle can be filled before it is necessary to empty the same.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of an ash pan for fireplaces having therein suitable draft regulators whereby the heat to be derived from the fireplace can be regulated at the will of the operator so that more or less heat can be obtained from the fuel within the fire.- place if found desirable.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an ash tray adapted to be used in connection withfireplaces, a portion of which is readily disposed beneath the grate of the fireplace for receiving the ashes and other waste material from the grate and which is further provided with suitable means whereby the pan when full, can be quickly and readily removed from the fire place and emptied of its contents. v
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set forth Specification of Le-tter P Patented An. l, 1922.
3, 1922. Serial No. 534,983.
pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanymg drawing, in which:
Figure 1 1s a front elevation of an ash pan constructed in accordance with my invention;
2 is a top plan view. and v Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view. Referring now more particularly to the drawings in which the various reference characters indicate the several parts throughout the views, the numeral 1 indicates the body portion of my improved ash tray which is preferably rectangular in form and provided with an extension, as shown at 2, the extension 2 being preferably adapted to be fitted beneath the grate of the fireplace, while the mainbody portion 1 is disposed outside of the grate or fuel receiving portion and provided within the space between the ends of the extension 2 and the body 1 with curved portions as at 3, which are preferably formed to be fitted tightly against the frame of the fireplace. While this portion is shown as curved in the present instance, it will be readily apparent that various forms can be used in accordance with the frame of the fireplace in which the device is to be used. It will be noted that the height of the extension 2 is somewhat below the main body portion 1 so that this extension may be readily inserted beneath the grate of the fireplace while the body portion 1 is disposed upon the exterior.
In order to facilitate the handling of the ash pan, a suitable handle 4 is attached to the main body of the pan at a point preferably where the extension 2 extends from the body as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. This handle when not in use, may be disposed within the main portion of the pan as shown in Fig. 3, or swung outwardly and fitted over the extension 2 as indicated at 5, this latter position being preferably adapted when shipping the pans or storing the same. An additional hand-grip 6 is attached to the front end of the main portion 1 and is used in connection with the handle 4 when it is desired to remove the pan from the fireplace for emptying the same of its contents.
A removable cover 7 is provided and is normally fitted upon the top of the main portion 1, said cover extending over the entire open space of the body 1 and the rear edge of this cover is formed with a cut away portion 8 whereby to fit the cover closely against the fuel receptacle of the fireplace.
The cover is preferably provided-with an up standing flange 9 xtending around the entire surface of the cover whereby to pre vent hot coals and dirt, etc. which might beaccidentally or otherwise removed from the fuel receptacle of the fireplace from reaching the floor or floor'cove'ring.
The cover is further provided with a downwardly projecting flange I as at 10 can be readily pulled forward and the ashes or other material within the extension 2 be moved forward to the main sectionof the pan 1, andthis operation carried out until the entire pan is filled, after which the contentsof thefpan can then be emptied.
In order to prevent the burning coals of the fireplace from moving outwardly onto the top of the cover 7, an upstanding guard plate 12 is provided, said guard. plate having formedat its lower edge, suitable projecting hooks 13 wh ch are adapted to be inserted through openings in the topof the cover? whereby to retain the guard 12 in its proper position with respect to the grate.
This guard 12 is preferably arranged around the cut away portion 8 of the cover and is formed toconform to theshape of the fireplace grate and in order to provide for a suitable draft through this guard. plate, a sliding plate 14 is carried by the guard and is further provided with openings 15 communicating with suitable openii'igs 16 formed in the guard whereby sliding movement of this plate, will open or close communication to the fireplace ,or support for the fuel. The plate 14- is manipulated through the medium, of a handle 17 which extends out through a slot 18 in the guard 12 and is adapted to be moved within said slot to open and close the. openings16.
Further draft regulating means is provided, by having suitable o enings 19 formed in the cover 7 directly in front of the guard. plate12and arranged beneath theopenings 19 is a movable plate 20 having openings 21 adapted to cooperate with the openings 1.9 for admitting'air into the ash pan which will direct theair beneath the grate 22, the air passing upwardly through said ,grate to create adraft in. the burning fuel. ,Th s plate 20 is operated by means of a handle 28 wh ch extends out through a suitableslot 24 formed in the cover 7 where by the plate 20 may be moyed to an open or closed position, the ends of the slot 24 limiting the movement of the plate.
will.
From theabove .description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be readily apparent that I have provided a very simple and eflicient ash pan particularly adapted for use in fireplaces wherein the extension member 2 can be readily inserted beneath the grate of the fireplace for receiving theashes and other waste material from. the grate and the cover 7 can be readily moved so as to-permit access to the receptacle for moving the collected ashes and material from the extension 2 into the body 1 until both portions of the receptacle have become filled, after which the cover? may be entirely removed and the handles 1- and 6 utilized for carrying the receptacle out to any suitable dumping place where the contents thereof maybe readily emptied, after which the receptacle may be replaced in the fireplace and the cover 7 arranged in its original position over the body member 1 so that the guard. plate 12 will fit tightlyagainst the fire box and the curved portions 3 will be fitted against the frame of the fire box.
As set forth heretofore, the fire within the tire box may be regulated by means of the movable plates 14 and 20 so thatthe heat of the fire may be increased or decreased at I claim: p a
1. An ash pan including a body member, an extending portion formed integralth'ere with, a removable cover normally arranged to cover the top f the body, an upstanding. guard plate removably mounted upon said cover and arranged at one side of the extension and draft regulators carried by said guard plate and cover plate,
2. An ash pan including albody portion having an extension at one side thereof,
said extension bein shorter than the bod r portion, a removable cover plate for normally covering the top of the body portion, a handle member having connection with the body atthe junction of the extension, and an additional handle memberformed upon the opposite side of the body, as and for the purpose set forth. I i
5-}. An ash pan including abody portion, an extension formed :integral therewith, a handle member having connection. with the body at the junction of the eiztension, a second handle member formed upon the opposite side of the body, a removable cover normally closing the top of the body, an upstanding guard plate removably mounted upon the body at one side of the extension and draft regulators carried by the guard plate and the cover, as andfor the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
