Sjrow- ELL a citizen of the United States, residing at Wheatland, in the county of C'ass and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain Holders for Binders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andeXact description of the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

'This invention relates to a grain holder for binders, and particularly to a holder which is disposed on the sheaf forming deck of a binder. It has been the practice heretofore to hold the head end of the sheafon this deck by means of a pair of depending spaced wires or light rods disposed 1n the slot in the grain deck through which the binding and packing members operate, orv by upwardly projecting wires or rods. It has been found that such holding means does not operate efficiently to form the proper sheaf.

It is an object of this invention, therefore, to providev a grain holding means for the head end of the sheaf which will insure that a compact and even sheaf is formed.

It is a further object of the invention to provide such a device which can be readily attached to a standard binder without any serious change therein. These, and other objects of the invention will become apparent as the description proceeds in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters indicate the same parts throughout the dierent views,

The device of ther invention comprises an arm l which extends laterally from the trip bar Z referred to, and vis preferably disposed beneath the grain board or deck a. Elongated Slots 2 are formed in the deck and suitably spaced to receive pins or rodlike members 3 which project upwardly from the bar l. The bar l is illustrated as being somewhat flattened at its outer end, and at its other end is formed with an at! taching iiange or plate extending at right angles to the same and provided with bolt holes 4 to accommodate the fastening bolts which Secure it to the said trip bar'. It will, of course, be understood that the bar -rl may be of any suitable shape, and while three of the pins 3 have beenl shown, this number may be varied, as desired. `Whle it has i been found convenient to attach the member l to the trip bar d, which is present in practically all types of binders, it can, of course, be attached to any oscillating member which will be found convenient to swing it to its desired positions. The slots 2 are made of sufficient length to accommodate the motion of pins 3 when the sheaf is being formed, and said pins are projected upwardly through the deck, as shown in full lines in Figs. 1 and 2. and when the sheaf is to be discharged, the same will be swung downwardly to substantially the position shown in dotted lines in these figures, so that the sheaf can be readily discharged thereover.

The pins 3 form a firm support for the' heads of the grain as the sheaf is being formed andthe stalks are prevented from slipping downwardly toward the head end as the butts are packed into` position by the butter Z). The device, therefore, co-operates with the grain packers and the butting member to form a sheaf in which the heads are evenly disposed and one which can be se* curely bound and be subsequently handled Without the grain becoming loosened or without being distorted.

It is thus seen that applicant has produced a simple attachmentv for a binder, the use of which greatly improves the formation of the sheaf. It will, of course, be understood that various changes may be made in the form, size and details of the device without' departing from the scope of the invention, which, generally stated, consists in the matter shown and described and set forth in the appended claims.

What I` claim is:

l. A grain holding device for a binder adapted to be disposed on the head side of the sheaf supporting grain deck thereof, which comprises spaced members extending upwardly from the surface of said deck.

2. A device of the class described, comprising a plurality of spaced rod-like members extending upwardly from the head side of the sheaf forming deck of a binder, a supporting means for said members, and means for attaching said irst mentioned means to a trip member of a binder whereby said rod-like members will be swung downwardly to sheaf discharging position.

3. The combination with a sheaf forming deck, and shear forming members of a grain binder, a grain holding device comprising a bar extending longitudinally beneath said deck, spaced pins thereon extending upwardly through slots in said deck, and means for swinging said pins to and from sheaf discharging position.

4. An attachment for a grain binder comprising a bar adapted to extend longitudinally of the sheaf forming deck of a binder, spaced pins extending at right angles thereto and adapted to project upwardly from the said grain deck, attaching means on said bar for attaching the same to a swinging member of a binder.

5. The combination with a sheaf forming deck and sheaf i binder, of means `for rigidly holding the heads of the sheaf as the same is formed, and means for swinging the same to sheaf discharging position.

G. In combinationwith the sheaf-forming means of a binder including the sheaf holding members and packers, an auxiliary sheaf holder comprising spaced pins projecting upwardly from and through `the grain deck of the binder at one side of the slot in said deck in which the grain-forming and tieing devices operate.
