To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALLAN A. MCDONALD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Potlat'ch, in the county of Latah and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in-tSTzlf-Locking Paper-Files; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to malge and use the same.

This invention relates to paper files and binders, and more especially to that class ineluding pins which areguarded; and the ob jeet of the same is to produce a file of this character upon which a paper may be 1nstanta-neously passed or impaled and from which it will not be accidentally lost, although when desired the papers strung upon the pin may be easily removed by the operator.

This and other objects are accomplished the constructionher zinafter more fully described and claimed, and as shown in the drawings wherein Figure lie-a general perspective view of this 1n'iproved paper file secured to an up right and in positionv readyto receive a sheet of paper upon its pin, the papers already there being heldjn place'by the guard. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through this device with the guard thrown up over the upper arm and out of the 'way so as to show the position the parts may assume when the operator desires to inspect or remove the papers on the pin. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the guard is made, the dot-ted lines therein showing the lines on. which the same is folded in the act of making the complete guard.

In the drawings the letter; U desl 'nates an ""upright member such as a-plece of lurniture to which this improved file holder is attached or the same may be a strip forming part ot a cabinet or file box-within which the papers when mounted on the holder are to be stored-4t being only essential that this piece be upright as illustrated in Fig. 1. Coming now more particularly to the details of construction, the file itself is made of a single piece of rather stilt wire bent into substantially U-shape in side elevation, the lower arm of the U forming the pin for puncturing or impaling the sheets of paper and the upper arm formingthe support for upward in a stretch 5, and formed into-another eye 6 preferably disposed at the cppo-- site side of said upright from the first eye, andfrom the second eye the wire iscontinued vertically upward and outward. in substantially a right angle 3 into the arm 8 which carries the guard. For the latter purpose the front end of said arm is formed into a tri- I angle 9whose cross barlO stands at the front and about over the head of the lower arm as shown. The guard is by preference made from the blank shown in Fig. 3, and may be of tin or other light sheet metal, and aftercard or label holder'assecn. a V-shaped notch 12 in its lower end, and its upper end turned over into a rather long eye 13 which engages the cross bar of the triangular loop at the front end of the upper arm.

In assembling the parts of this improved paper file as above described. the wire member is attached to any. suitable upright U by means of two screws S passed through its eyes as shown, and when inplace thereon. the pin will project forward from the upright and preferably slightly upward and the arm will also project forward and possibly upward to some -extent, while the guard will hang from the front end of the triangular loop of the arm, its body inclining slightly backward as shown. in Fig. 1, and its notch standing astride the pin just in rear of the head 1 as illustrated. When new it is desired to apply or impale a piece of paper upon the pin, it is simply passed over the point of the head and pushed to the rear, and in doing so the operator will swing the lower end of the guard rearward I and upward around its eye so that its notched end rises off the pin and leaves the latter free for the reception of the paper. When now it becomes desirable to remove one or more papers the head of the pin must be deflected downward by hand so that the guard may be swung' forward at its lower extremity until its notch, clears the head, after which it is swung over toth'e position indicated in-Fig. 2 where free endstands above the arm, and the operator is then at libertyv to, remove any or all of the papers and to replace them at leisure.
