T0 all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, Pirrnicn LACOSTE, acitizen of the United States,residing at San Antonio, in the county of Bex-ar and State of` Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sink Strainers, off which the following is a specificationI This invention relates to attachments for drain outlets, such as sinks, wash basins, and the like, and theA prima-ry object' 'ofthe invention is t'o provide an improved means for. leffectively preventing particles vof dirt and the like from 'enterlng into theywaste pipe and cloggingthe same.
Another ob'ect ofl the inventiorris torpro# vide an improved strainer for drain` pipes, which is so constructed and arranged in rela'- tion tothe drain pipe thatthe solid matter will fall into the strainer while the waste water will pass around' the same, thereby preventinfg'the particles of dirt or the like from. following the water into the drainit plpe;
A further object ofthe invention isf to provide an improved strainer for waste pipe so constructed as to catch the particles of dirt and solid matter without the passage of waste water therethrough, the strainer. bel ing detachably associated with the drain pipe to permit the removal thereof whenthe. strainer becomes filled with solid matter.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved strainer for drainpipes of the above character which is dur able and efficient in use, lone that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market ata reasonable cost. f
Other objects'of the invention will appear in the following detail description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which drawings:
Figur 1, is a vertical. longitudinal section through the improved drain provided with the improved screen.
Figure 2 is a transverse section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and- Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of the removable handle for removing the strainer from the drain pipe.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A indicates the casing for the strainer B which is held in place therein Specification of Letters 'ateiit.

vThecasingJAincludes a cylindrical body 5 'andl anupp'er relatively short cylindrical section. The lower end of th'e'relatively yshort 'sectionis provided with suitable-exterior threads 7 for engaging the.` upper threaded end of the cylindrical body 5. The` bodyadj acent toits upper endfis provided with yan. inwardly extending arcuate bowed portion or. bead h8, whichlextends inwardly of the inner. surface of.l the body 5 forapurpose whifchwill be hereinafter more fully described. The upper end of' the bead 8 terminates in an outwardly extending annular flange 9, which forms .means whereby thel *thev sink or the..
casing A may be secured to like.. The lowerend of.=the.cylindrical body 5 is contracted as at 1`0.and provided with a suitable ythreaded extension 11` whereby the. same can drain pipe.
.be connected to the ordinary The. upper end of the section.
5-is. provided with an offset upwardly extending flange 11', which isv internally threaded Vfor the reception of they exterior threadedlower end'ofthe section 6. Owing tothe offset portion 11 formed onthe upper endfof the lower section 5, ythe inner surfaces of the upper andlower sections 6 and 5 extend iush with one another. A
`The strainer B includes a hollow cylindiical` perforated body 12, which is positionedwithin the ycasing' and the same ends or terminatesshort of the contracted end 10 thereof. The lower. end of the strainer is provided with a perforated wallll, while the upper end of the same isopened and providedpwith an outwardly and upwardly annular {iange 14. n
The hanger or support C is provided for detachably holding thestrainer lB in concentric relation to the casing A and the same includes the upwardly and outwardly flared annular guide 15, which is provided with outwardly extending radially arranged horizontally disposed lugs 16 which are adapted to detachably engage in the recesses 17 formed in the lower. edge of the section 6 which rests on the offset portion of the cylindrical body 5 of the casing. When the annular ared guide 15 is placed in position surface of the short section 6 engages the upper surface of the oiset portion andprevents displacement of the strainer. The inner end of the guide"15 isprovided with an inwardly extending annular supporting iiange 18 upon which is adapted to rest the y outwardly extending flange 14 formed on the strainer B;
The upper end of the outwardly flared guide 15 is located beyond the annular arcuately curved, b eadaS so ,that any -solid particlesfof matter flowing over .the bead will .drop into thezguidef 15v and then into `thestraine'r. i
The inner surface lot the strainer B .is provided at dianietrically opposite positions with inwardly extending kpairsiof spaced lugs 19 and theselugs torin'nieans whereby 'the strainer B may bereadilyr'emoved from'v the casing when the sainebec'ome -iilled with solid matter and a handle 20 of inverted Uf, shape is provided `for engaging the lugs 19. rlhe arms 21 of the U-shaped handle 2O is provided with pairs of openings 22 and when it is desired-'to remove the strainer fromv the body, the legs are pressed inwardly toward -its-otlier end and inserted into thel bodyl of the strainer until the lugs 19 lride into the openings y22 atwliich times the arms21 arereleased:V Upon upward inoveel ment of the handle the strainer will be ,lifted therewith.- .-5.1 v
nuse'of the improved device the water in the sinlrwill followv the curvature-of the arcuate bead 8 and iiow downfthe sides of,
thecasing A. `Any solid matter carried :with the water will fall into the guide l-whenthe same reachesthe curved Aportion yof the bead. This eliminates the tlowing oitv the water in the strainer vand thus preveiitsthe particles of dirt from leaving the Vstrainer which would be^liable i'fxthe `water .was `flowing therethrough. f Y i F rom the `foregoing description'it can be seenfthat an.y improved strainer 'is provided ofthe above character which is exceptionally simple and' :durable,'aiid which will elitectivelyprevent the entrance of dirt into Athe waste pipe. f
`Changes` :in detail may be made without departing from the spirit or scope omy invent-ion; Abut, f
1. The combination of a `'body having. a
drain aperture, of an attachment therefor including a casingarranged to surround the drain aperture, a lstrainer associated with 'the casing and spaced 'from the casing `throughout its entire length, and a transversely curved bead formed on the upper end of the casing arranged above the strainer and to partially overhang said strainer.
2. The combination with a body having a drain opening, o1 an attachment therefor including acasing arranged to surround the drain casing, .an annular flared guide carried by the Opening and arranged ink spaced -rela` tion'to .the inner surface thereohthe casing, inwardly extending annular i vbowed bead formed thereon, an upi'vardly and outwardlyflared annular guide carried bythelcasing and arranged below and Aoutwardly of the bead `and in spaced relation to the innersurface ofthe casing, and a strainer detachably carried by said guide.
Aix'catchY basin including a cylindrical easing including a pair ot sections, the uppermost section having a lower' cxteriorly threaded terminal arranged" to engage the upper end of the lowermost section, the lowerinost fsection khaving an internally threaded oiset portiony lor the reception ot the lower terminal of the upper section, an
upwardly and' outwardly liared annular guide arranged in the casing, outwardly extending/lugs liornie'd on the guide and ar-` ranged `to detachably engage the offset portion of the lower section, the lower end of theexte'nsionvedge ot the upper section be# ing arranged to engage the upper surface ot the voiiset portion and having recesses :toi-ined therein to receive. the legs to prevent displacement of the saine olii ot the olf set. portion,` a strainer detachably yassociated withthe guide, the upper endV ol said upper section .being 'provided with a curved annular bead-.arranged inwardly of the guides.
