To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVE GRACE HENDER- soN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Desks and Chairs, of which the following vis a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates to desks and chairs especially designed for use in school rooms,
- andhas for one of its objects to .provide a the tion.
chair or seat adapted to be interchangeably used by students of different sizes.
Another object is to provide a combination desk and chair of simplified and improved construction which is durably built and conveniently arranged for use. Uther objects will appear as the description proceeds.
The invention will be first hereinafter de'- scribed in connection with the accompanying drawings, which constitute part of this cification, and then more specifically dened in the claims at the end of the descrip- In the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters are used to the several views:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a combination desk and chair egnstructed substan tially in accordance with'this invention.
F1 re 2 is a right hand side elevation of evice.
Figure 3 is a front elevation thereof.
Figu said desk and chair, and I Figure 5 is a detailed section through the shelf of the chair taken centrally thereof from front to back, showing means for limiti the forward and rearward movements of t e foot-stool.
The chair has a. seat 1 supported on suitable legs 3 and 4, the two rear ones of which extend above the seat and ca-rry the back 2-. Strips 21 may extend between the legs under the seat. The right hand front leg a also extends above the seat lifor supporting an arml, the rear "end of which is connected to-the upward extension of the right hand rear leg 3. The upward extension of the leg 4 also serves to support the-ri ht hand Specification of Letters Patent.
upon the floor.

Application filed December 1, 1921. Serial No. 519,185.
The 1e t hand rear corner of the desk top 10 is supported by a bracket 13 secured to the left hand upright 11, a separate upright support for said corner being omitted in order to permit ready access to the chair from the right hand side thereof. A box or compartment 17 may be secured along the right hand side of the desk for storing writing inaterials, artists su plies, or the like. A. cover 18 may be hinge at 19 to the upper edge of said box so that when it is folded down it will form a continuation or extension of the desk top 10. Said cover 18 is designate corresponding parts throughout:
re 4 is a left hand side elevation of preferably hinged to the outer edge of t e box so that when it is raised or swung u wardly it will not. interfe re with access being had to the box by the occupant of the chair. Rubber tips 22 are preferabl inserted on the top edge of the box 17 w ere the cover 18 strikes so as to eliminate thenoisev when said cover is dropped.
The chair is provided with a shelf 5 arranged below the seat 1 and preferably supported by two cross spindles28 between the 3 and 4. This shelf may be used for le S hiding. students books and book bags which are usually carried from one class room to another. To the under face of said shelf 5 channeled trips 7 are secured to extend alon its lateral. edges and face inwardly or toward each other. A foot-stool 6 is fitted-to slide in said channeled strips 7 and has its front edge supported on legs 8 suitably secured to the under surface thereof by metal angle braces 9, as shown in Figures 2, 3 and i.
Said foot-stool may be projected beyond the front edge of the shelf 5 as illustrated in Fig. 1, and in dotted lines in Fig. 2, when the chair is used by a small child. When a larger student occupies the chair, the foot.
stool 6 is pushed back in the guiding channels 7 to a position below the? shelf 5 where it is entirely out of the way,'as indicated in solid lines in Fig. 2, and also in Fig. 4c. The
outward and inward movements of the footstool may be limited in any suitable manner, as by metal stops 24 and 25 screwed under the shelf 5, and adapted to contact with a plate 27 secured to the rear edge of the foot-stool and projecting above the same, see Figure 5.
The provision ofthe sliding foot-stool makes it possible for a uniform size of chair to be used throughout a number of class rooms in which students of different ages or sizes are to be accommodated. The chair equipped. with said sliding foot-stool may also be employed to advantage in the class rooms of high schools or other educational institutions where the same room is occupied during the day by different classes made up of students of various ages and sizes. Thus the same size of desk and chair constructed in accordance with the present invention may be used to accommodate all grades from the' first to the eighth, as well as high-school classes. 6
The provision of the braces between the desk supports or uprights and the chair le insures steadiness and firmness of the (2165i and chair, so that there is no danger of paint pans or paint boxes sliding off while in use and spilling water and paint on the floor or clothing of the user. The arrangement of the storage compartment at one side and on a level with the desk top makes it easy for students to take out and put away supplies quickly and noiselessly. It will also be noted that the rigid connections between the desk and chair make it possible for them to be moved from. place to place as a single piece of furniture without disturbing the proper relative positions of one with respect to the other. Moreover, the desk top being level, ink and other supplies may be placed thereon without danger of upsetting, and the desk is constructed so that no bolt heads or ragged edges of iron come in contact with the hands or clothing of the occupant.
The legs 3 of the chair and supports 8 of the foot-stool may have metal knobs or silence domes 26 attached thereto so as to slide freely over the floor.
I claim:
1. The combination with a chair, of a desk arranged in front of the same, one of the front legs of the chair being extended upwardly to support one of the adjacent corners of the desk, supporting means reaching to the floor from both of the remote corners of the desk, and a substantially L- shaped brace to extend along the floor and connect the bottom of said supporting means with the lower end of the leg having said upward extension.
2. The combination with a chair, of a desk arranged in front of the same an arm at one side of the chair extending to the corresponding side of the desk, a storage compartment extending along one lateral edge of the desk beyond said arm, and a removable cover for said compartment adapted when closed to abut against said lateral edge of the desk and lie in the same plane with said desk so as to constitute a continuation thereof.
name to this specification.
