BED-BAIL FASTENER.
Application :tiled Detobe 1,
To @ZZ 'whom t may concern:
Be known that. l, ALEXANDER S. PUT- NAiin a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county ot Los Angeles and State of' (lalitoi'nia, have invented new and useful improvements in Bed-Rail Fasteners, of which the 'following is a specification.
My invent-ion-relates 'to a bed rail fastener, the principal object of my invention being to generally improve upon and simplit'y the construct-ion of the existing Jforms ot bed rail tasteners'toprovide a relatively simple and etlicient fastening means that may be advantageously utilized between metal side rails and the wooden posts oi' a bed frame; Jfui-ther to provide a construction that is selttightening, that is. the parts being constructed so that they are automatically drawn into close engagement with each other when properly assembled, there- 'by providing a firm, strong and substantial structure between the side rail ot' the bed and the corner post of the bed trame.
A further object oiimy invention is to provide a rail, simply and practically constructed, wherein the side rail ot thebed may be turnedI end to end, so that when it is arranaged with its horizontally disposed flange at the bottom and inwardly presented, it will serve as a. support tor .transversely disposed spring or mattress slats.
llilith the foregoing and other objects' in view my invention consists in certain novel tentures of construct-ion and arrange1 ment ot parts/ that will be hereinafter more tuly described and claimed and illustrated in the acconn'ianying drawings in which--` Fig'. 1 is a perspectivel view ot a hcd rail` fastener ot' my improved construction;y
llig. i is a ,plan view ot the fastening dcvicc ol' my improved construction and showing the corner post oi the hed traine in hori- :mntal section:

1221. Serial No. 504,556.
.embodiment of my invention, `designates the kwooden corner postof a bed frame; 11
'the head rail or panel that is disposed becomprises a substantially rectangular plate 18 of suitable sheet metal in the upper corner and rear portions, on which are formed appertures 14 that are adapted to receive metal dowel pins 15, when the rear portion of the plate is positioned in slot 16, that is formed in the corner post 10. This manner ot fastening the plate 13 to the corner posteliminates the use oi fastening devices, such as screws and bolts and which latter tend to work loose.l while in service. Pressed from the body ot plate 13 and extending at right 'angles thereto, is a vertically disposed .Hange 17, which, when the plate 13 is secured. to, post 10, occupies a shallow recess 18, that is vformed in the face ot said corner post and this flange serves as. a bearing for the plate 13 on the post, as Well as for a. bearing for the rear edge of the part of the fastening device that. is secured to side rail 12.
' Formed in the upper forward portion of plate 13 is an inwardly extending slot 19 andextending downwardly and rearwardly 1fromy the rear end thereof is a 'slot 19', the lower portion 'ot which terminates a short distance in iront of the central portion of flange 17. Formed integral with the lower front' portion ot plate 13 is a laterally projecting anole bracket 20, the horizontal flange ot which is rearwardly presented andr said bracket. serves'as a support* and point` ot attachment forthe end portion of and lend 4igail 21'and vwhich latter is preferabl construeted'-trom a piece, of angle iron. llt will be understood that both ends of end rail 21am connected to the bracket 20 ot plates 13," and thus the two plates that are connected to a pair of the cornerposts 10 are rigidly connected to .each otherand a firm and substantial structure is thus produced.
The end portion of the side rail 12 is provided with a longitlulinally disposed slot 22 between the vertical and horizontal flanges and positioned and directly beneath this slot and spaced apart a slight distance from the end portion of the vertical flange of said rail 12 is a plate 23, the rear portion of which is bent latterly a slight distance so that it bears directly against the inner face of the vertical flange of said rail 12, and said bent rear portion of said plate being secured to the vertical flange of the siderail by rivets 24 for like fastening devices. Formed integral'with and projecting upwardly and downwardly from the upper and lower corners of plate 23 and immediately adjacent toitsouter end are lugs 25, having inclined rear edges 26 and the upperrone of these flanges project upwardly through the outer portion of slot 22. Seated in the upper outer portions of plate Q3 and vertical flange of rail 12 isa pin or rivet 27, the ends of which are riveted down against the outer faces of said plate 23 and the vertical flange of rail 12. (See dotted lines Fig. 5.) l
When the side rail 12. carrying the plate 23, is secured to the corner post attachment, the parts are manipulated so that the upper portion of plate 13 `occupies a position be` tween plate .23 and the end of the vertical flange of side rail l2, and with the rivet 2'? positioned in the downwardly and rearwardly projecting slot 19. As the parts vare forced into engagement with each other the rivet will ride down the edges of the in clined slot 19', thereby drawing the parts firmly together with the endfof' plate 23 bearing against flange on the face of post 1Q and this drawing together action is enhanced by the bearing of the inclined rear edge 26 of the lowering 25 againstthe rear edge of the end rail 21. Thus the parts of the fastening device vare very firmly secured to each other when properly assembled and the parts cannot be detached until side rail 12 is engzgaged and lifted so as to withdraw rivet 27 from the slots 19 andr19. lhen it is desired to utilize the side rail for supporting` transverse slats and which latter support a spring or mattress (not shown) the side rail 12 is turned end for end and fastening devices on the ends of said siderail areengaged with the plates 13 in the manner hereinbefore described, and when so positioned the horizontally disposed flange of the side rail projects inwardly from the lower .portion of the Avertically disposed flange, thereby providing a wide and substantial support for` the ends of the slats or the like.
A bed rail fastener of my improved construction is comparatively simple and may be easily and cheaply produced, and is especially applicable for the attachment of metal side rails to wooden corner post-s, permits vto the corner post l''that is arranged projecting upwardly and the side rails to be reversed so as to produce tial, and very effective in performing their intended functions. It will be understood that minor changes in the size, form and 'construction of the various parts of my improved bed rail fastening device may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of my invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention f l. In a bed rail fastener, a plate secured of thebed frame, which plate is provided with an inverted L-shaped i slot, a bracket projecting laterally from said plate, an end rail aflixed to said bracket and spaced from the corner post, a side rail, aplate sect-'"ed to the end thereof, means seated in vsaid side rail and in the plate carried thereby for engagement in the slot in the first mentioned plate, and lugs formed on the upper and lower corners of the4 plate that is secured to theside rail, the lower one of which lugs is adapted to be positioned between the end rail of 'the bed frame andthe post.
2. Ina bed rail fastener, a corner post, a plate, lhaving a portion seated in a slot in said post, means for securing said plate to said post, a flange projecting laterally from said plate and bearing against the outer face of the post, there being an inverted L-shaped slot formed in `the outer portion of said plate, a side rail, a plate secured to the end of said side rail, and a rivet seated in said plate and side rail and adapted to occupy the slot in the first mentioned plate.
3. In a bed rail fastener alpost, a plate carried by said post, and projecting outwardly therefrom, -a laterally extending bracket on said plate, an-end rail affixed to said bracket and spaced at its'rearwa-rd edge from said post, said plate formed above the bracket with an open ended, downwardly inclined slot, a side rail, a pin on said side rail adapted to be engaged in said slot and a plate on said side rail arranged to abut against the post when the in is engaged in the slot, said plate being downwardly from the side rail, either of which lugs isadapted to extend between the end rail and the post in Wedge engagement therei'vvith.`
