Description

0. F. TF-IPP.
Knit-Mittens.
Patented August 26, 1873.

IMPROVEMENT IN KNIT MITTENS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,301, dated August 26, 1873; application filed December 31, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTHNEIL F. TRIPP, of Battle Creek, in the county of Calhoun and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machine Knit or Woven Double Mitten and I do declare that the following isa true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompa= nying drawings, and being a part of this specitication, in which my invention is shown in perspective.
My invention relates to the manufacture of knit mittens, the object of which is to provide a Warm and desirable style of yarn mitten, having the hand and thumb composed of two thicknesses-one within the other-suitably united into a single web to form the wrist, and joined together at other portions in the manner hereinafter described, to prevent displacement while being drawn on and off the hand. This is accomplished by knitting, in the ordinary or any well-known way, both an inside and an outside mitten, uniting both at the termination of the hand portion, and knitting the wrist portion single, and fastening them together by means of stitches at the end of thumb and tip of hand, leaving the hand portions otherwise separate, composed of two thickn essesone within the other--thus forming completely a mitten within a mitten, combining both convenience and novelty in its production.
I am aware that two mittens may have been drawn upon the hand separately-one over the otherand thus worn; andI am also aware that it is not new to construct mittens with cloth linings, or to knit the striped double mittens, such as knit by hand, knitting with two threads alternately. But in my invention the hand and thumb portion of the inner mitten is as complete as the outer, both being united as herein set forth, and manufactured thus for the purpose of being worn double.
I claim- Y A double knit mitten, the innerand outer hand portions of which are connected in several places by stitches, and joined together into a single web, forming the wrist, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
OTHNEIL F. TRIPP.
