Description

J. RICHTER. RIBBON ATTACHMENT FOR STRINGED INSTRUMENTS.
APPLICATION FILED MAR. I0, 1920.
Patented July 11, 1922.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RIBBON ATTACHMENT FOR STRINGED INSTRUMENTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 10, 1920. Serial No. 364,868.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHANNES RICHTER, residing at Niederlossnitz, near Dresden, Saxony, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ribbon Attachments for Stringed Instruments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device whereby an instrument such as a mandolin may be held in position by a cord which passes over the shoulder of the player, both ends of the cordbeing held by a groove of the knob.
In the accompanying drawings the device is shown by way of example.
In all the figures the device is shown in natural size.
Fig. 1 is an elevation of the device.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a section of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 shows a plan view of part of the instrument with the device attached.
Fig. 5 is an end elevation of the instrument showing the device in position.
The device for holding a mandolin or a similar stringed instrument consists of a piece of metal of right angular cross sectionfitted with a knob. Instead of metal any other convenient material could be used. The attaching device is about 5 centimeters long. Two arms of the metal piece are either of the same width or one arm is slightly wider than the other as shown on the drawings. The wider arm a has an eye 0 at one of its ends in which the knob cl is fixed. The metal piece of right angular cross section is slightly curved to conform with the lower end of the instrument. The edge at the angle of the metal piece is rounded off so that it does not present any sharp edges. The device is to be placed surface of the instrument.
upon the upper edge of the lower end of the instrument in such a manner that the arm a grips over the bottom plate of the instrument, the arm 2) bearing upon the upper The middle of the device is located across the longitudinal axis of the instrument; the strings of the instrument pass over the rounded edge of the device. In order to insert the device the strings are slightly loosened so that the device can be pushed under the same whereupon the strings are tightened again and maintain the device in position. There are no special means required for holding the device in place, both ends of the ribbon 0r cord being held in the groove of the knob d. Said knob being outside the range of the springs, the ribbon or cord does not interfere with the playing of the instrument.
I claim A device whereby a mandolin or a similar stringed instrument may be held in position by a cord consisting of a piece of metal slightly curved to conform to the lower end of the instrument of right angular cross section and comprising two arms of difi'erent widths, said piece having its edge at the angle roundedofi', an eye at one end of the arm which bears upon the lower end of the instrument and a grooved knob secured in said eye so that it stands outside the range of the strings, both ends of the cord being held by the groove of said knob.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence or" two witnesses.
JOHANNES RICHTER. I
Witnesses ERNST Mr'iLLER, KARL WERNER.
