OSCAR W. J ONES, 0F CAMBRIDGE CITY, INDIANA.
ADVERTISING WHEEL.
Application filed February '7, 1921.
citizen of the United States, residing in Cambridge City, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented a new and novel construction for Advertising Wheels, of which the following is a full, clear, and comprehensive specification and exposition, the same being such as will enable others to make and install the same with exactitude.
"The object of rny present invention,
broadly stated, in the provision of an advertising wheel, adapted to be operated by the wind, and which is new and novel in construction, attractive in appearance, strong and durable in construction, and which can be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low price.
The device is in the nature of a wheel mounted to rotate horizontally being propelled by the wind, and upon the periphery of which a number of advertisements may be displayed whereby the attention of passers-by will be attracted thereto, and also having means whereby the advertisements may be changed without disfiguring the mechanism and with very little trouble and time devoted thereto.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will suggest themselves in the course of the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, and as particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
The preferred means for carrying out the principles of my inventionin a practical manner is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Figure 2 is a top plan view of the device. Figure 3 is a central cross section as taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2. And Figure 4 is an enlarged detail horizontal section taken through one corner of the device.
Similar indices denote like parts throughout the several views.
In order that the construction, the operation, and the advantages of my invention may be more fully understood and appreciated, I will now take up a detailed description thereof in which I will set forth the several parts as fully as I may.
Referring now to the drawings in detail: Numeral 1 denotes the supporting post Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 11, 1922.
Serial No. 443,086.
which extends up vertically, and projecting upward from the upper end of the post 1 is the pivot 2.
Numeral 3 denotes the hub which has a central cavity or socket which opens clownward and located concentric thereof, into which socket will fit the upper end of the pivot 2, the hub being adapted to rotate horizontally on said pivot.
A set-screw L is inserted loosely through an aperture in the center of the top of the hub andit extends down into the center of the pivot 2 whereby it prevents the hub from being lifted off of the pivot unless the screw the first removed.
Radiating out from the hub 3 are a plurality of spokes 5, each of which is secured to a flange of the hub 3 by a pair of bolts 6.
Carried by the outer portions of all the spokes 5 is a sheet-metal band, which is bent to extend from spoke-to-spoke forming six display portions 7, which are integral with each other, each extending from the outer end of one spoke to a point centerward from the end of the spoke next thereto. The said band also forms the six wing portions 8, which are also integral therewith. Each of said wing portions is formed by that portion of said band which contacts with the side of a spoke and connects the ends of two of the said display portions 7. Each of the wing portions 8 is parallel with the spoke 5 to which it is secured.
The outer ends of the spokes 5 are connected by means of bolts 9 to the respective wing portions 8, as is shown in Fig. 4:.
The upper and the lower edge portions of each of the display portions 7 are bent outward and then toward each other forming the respective upper and lower lips 10 and 11, thereby providing channels to receive the edges of the display plates 12, each of which is adapted to cover the face of one of the display portions 7, substantially as inclicated in Figs. 3 and 4.
Mounted on the upper edge of each of the display portions 7 and over the outer end portions of the spokes 5 are the sheet metal cones 13, there being one over the outer portion of each of said spokes, each of the cones having its larger end directed in the same direction as the face of the corresponding wing 8.
Advertising matter may be printed on the faces of the display portions 7 and when the advertising matter has become old or out of date or change thereof is required, then the display plates 12, having the desired printed matter thereon, may be slid into place. over the display portion 7 where they will be re tained by their respective lips 10 and 11 until another change is desired. a
It can now be seen that my invention, being arranged substantially as set forth, can be placed at the sides of roadways or at the intersections of streets, and that the movement of the air in any direction will cause the wheel to revolve, thereby bringing panoramically into view the several advertisements above mentioned, and it is apparent that the movement of the wheel will attract the attention of persons passing and cause them to read the advertisements, thereby accomplishing the ,desideratum of this invention. 7
It is to be understood that various changes may be made in the several details of construction without departing from the spirit of my invention andwithout sacrificing any of the advantages thereof which are new and useful and which involve invention.
Having now fully shown and described my invention, what I clai1n, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s
A construction of the nature set forth comprising a vertical post, a pivot extending up from theupper end of the post, a hub having a central cavity to receive said pivot, a set-screw for securing the hub in place on the pivot, a plurality of spokes radiating from the hub, a sheet metal band connecting the outer ends of the spokes and bent to form display portions each extending from the end of one spoke to the side of the spoke next thereto thereby forming wings each parallel with its respective spoke, all of said'dfisplay portions and wings being integral parts of said metal band, a removable plate adapted to be placed over the face of each of said display portions, andflmeans' for retaining said plates removably 'in'position, all sub-V stantially as shown and described,
In testimony whereof 'I have hereunto subscribed my,name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
