UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES T. DRAPER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE DRAIPEI MANUFAC- TUBING- COMIPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
REMOVABLE FALSE HEAD FOR METALLIC CONTAINERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4., 1922.
Application filed March 15, 1920. Serial No. 565,722.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. DRAPER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Removable False Heads for Metallic Con tainers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to containers, and
has particular reference to metallic containers which are used for the shipping and storing-of liquids such as alcohol and the like.
In shipping alcohol and numerous other liquids, the law requires that theGovernment agent or inspector impress certain data in the surface of the container. In-metallic containers heretofore used, it has not been possible for the Government inspector to impress therein, the data required by law,
.therefore it has been necessary for the shipper to employ wooden barrels or casks for the shipping of liquids of the above mentioned character. These containers have proven unsatisfactory in use, and for the purpose of eliminating the disadvantages incident to woodencontainers, this invention has been evolved, which permits .tl-ie use of a metallic container, and also comp ies with the law by having means associated therewith which permits the impression of the required data in the head of said container.
It is, therefore, one object of my invention I to provide a container, having a superimposed, removable head, positi0ned on one of the permanent heads, which will permit the'impression of data therein.
A further object of this invention, is to provide a metallic container having a removable superimposed head, and means associated with the container for removably 1 securing the superimposed head to said con-.
tainer, which are easy and inexpensive to manufacture, and strong and durable in service.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following description, and the particular features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claims. p
In the drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein simllar characters of reference designate similar parts in the several views,
Figure 1,- is a perspective view of the con heads 6 and 7 and provided with the usual tainer, showing the superimposed head in position,
Figure 2, is a vertical section through the container.
Fig. 3, is an enlarged section of the chime of the container, showing the superimposed head in position.
I Fig. 4, is a perspective View of one of the superimposed head-retaining means.
Fig. 5, is a perspective view of the container showing the su erimposed head held in position by a modi ed form of retaining means.
Fig. 6, is a vertical section through the container illustrated in Fig. 5.
Fig. 7, is an enlarged sectional view of the chimeof the container illustrated in Fig. 5, and
Fig. 8, is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view of the modified form of the supfiarimposed head retaining means.
' ferring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 5 designates a container which is closed at both ends by means of outlet 5.
As shown in Figure 3, the upper edge of the container is curled at 8 providing a depending flange 9 which is arranged parallel to and extends entirely around the circumference of the container. The means for closing the ends of the container are clearly shown in this figure; the head 7 being positioned within the container and provided with a continuous upstanding circumferential flange 10 which rests adjacent the inner. side of the container 5. The flange 10 is overturned or curled at 11, which curl terminates in a substantially U-shaped portion formed of flanges 12 and 13, the curl 9B 11 resting upon the above-mentioned curl 8. The flange 12 bears against the flange 9, above mentioned, and the flange 13 fits tightly between the flange 9 and the body of the container, the construction thus tightly 100 seaming the head to the container by a double-lock seam.
- A reinforcing hoo or chime ring is rovided for the end 0 the container 5, which hoop is formed of a main portion 14 which 105 is positioned adjacent the chime of the container. This hoop is seamed to the edge of the container by having the portion 14 curled.
as shown at 15, said cfl rl resting on the curled portion 11 and terminating m portions 161.19)
and 17; the portion 16 hearing against the above mentioned section 12 and the portion 17 being bent under the U-shaped' portion formed of sections 12 and 13.
An additional head 18 is provided for the container 5, said head being superimposed on the head 7. This head 18 is formed preferably of wood or any suitable material which is adapted to receive an impression, and is less in diameter than the head 7 to permit it to be securely held in position, as
. will hereinafter be described.
' which is an extension of one of the sides of The superimposed head 18 is removably which is illustrated in Figure 4 and a modified form of which is shown in Figure 8.
Referring to the form shown in Figure 4, it can be seen that the type of retaining means shown therein is formed of bendable material and comprises a lip 19 which forms a part of the entire device, and which has secured thereto and preferably formed integral therewith, a U-shaped portion 20. The U-shaped portion 20 receives the portion 14 of the retaining hoop and the lip 19,
U-shaped portion 20, is adapted to be bent down to the position shown in'full lines in Figure 3, upon the head 18 which has previously been placed within the chime of the container. The head 18 is securely held in position by means of screws 21, or other suitable retaining means, which pass through an opening 22 in'the lip 19. It is obvious that with the structure of retaining means illustrated on sheet 1 of the drawings, any number of said retainers may be employed, from comparatively few. as illustrated by Figure 1, to a multiplicity, or sufiicient to constitute practically an entire circle.
On sheet 2 of the drawings, the retainer for the superimposed head is shown as coinprising substantially a slip hoop, having an upright section 23 and a relatively small flared portion or flange 24 which is retained under and by the portion 14 of the container reinforcing hoop.
The section 23 of the retaining hoop-,terminates in a lip 25 which is adapted to be bent over upon the superimposed head 18.
' As above mentioned, the retaining means illustrated in Figure 8, and above described, comprises substantially a hoop, but said hoop being split providing abutting open ends 26 and 27, permits the use of the device with containers of different size. Moreover, the hoop, being split, may be slightly collapsed,
. and, therefore, it may easily be put into place by hand. This hoop in expanding causes the lip 24 to extend beneath and hook under the vertical wall 14 of the reinforcing hoop. These modified'retaining means are substantial equivalents, although the type first described lends itself more readily to the removal'of the false wooden head. The
members of these retaining means are seen to be essentially S-shaped in cross section, so that they may engage beneath the hoop entering the recessed head and engage above the inserted wooden head. i
In shipping liquids as hereinbefore mentioned, the Government agent or inspector impresses his seal or other required'data on the head 18 in any suitable manner and it is obvious, that after one use of the head 18, the impressions on said head may be eflaced and others placed thereon and the same head may be used again, or the head after use may be removed and a new head substituted therefor.
It is further obvious that the head may be formed of several portions and in this event,-
I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent of the United Statesis:

A s eet metal container provided with a head at each end rigidly secured thereto, a reinforcing chime -ring for said ends, a wooden false head'removably superimposed on one of the first namedheads, and meansextending under said reinforcing chime ring and adapted to'removably engage the superimposed head. r
3. A sheet metal container provided with heads, a reinforcing chime ring for each of its ends, a wooden false I head removably superimposed on one of said heads, and 'a. plurality of retaining means for said superimposed head, each provided with a portion connected to the reinforcing chime ring and a portion adapted to be removably secured'to said superimposed head.
4. .A sheet metal container having a recessed unetallic head, a reinforcing chime ring forsaid head, a wooden false head removably positioned upon said metallic head, and a plurality of retaining members therefor having terminals substantially U-sha in cross section extending behind the chime ring; their bodies being approximately shaped to extend over the false head and retain it in position. Y
5. A sheet'metal container heads, a reinforcing chime heads, a Wooden false head removably superimposed on one of said heads, and a plurality of bendable retaining means for sections of the Wooden head, each having a substantially -shaped portion engaged by said reinforcing chime ring and a lip secured to said U- shaped portionand adapted to be secured to said superimposed head. I
, 6. A metallic container having a head at provided with each end, one being recessed, a reinforcing recessed head, a Wooden ring entering said head superimposed on one of the above meritioned heads, and means connected beneath said reinforcing chime ring and to the superimposed wooden head for retaining said wooden head in position. I
7. i In combination with a metallic container provided with a head at each end and a rein-v forcing chime ring for each end a sectional Wooden false head superimposed on one of the above mentioned heads, and retaining ring for said means substantially S-shaped in cross sectionconnected to said reinforcing chime ring and engaging the individual wooden sections for removably securing the superimposed d in position,
8. In combination with a sheet metal container having a recessed head secured there- -to by a double-lock seam and a reinforcing chime ring, of a false Wooden head superposed upon and within the recessed head comprising Wooden sections substantially covering the latter, and sheet metal means approximately S-shaped in cross section engaged beneaththe chime ring and overlying the'edges of the Wooden sections to retain them in place.
In testimony whereof I do now affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
