Description
W. L. BUED'INGEN. BOX TRAY SUPPORT,
PPPP IQATION FILED MAY 22. 1920.

TaT ES ii AT BOX TRAY SUPPORT.
Application filed May 22,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. VILLIAM L. Bunorn- GEN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of M11- waukee and State of Visconsin, have 1nvented new and useful Improvements in Box Tray Supports, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tray supports for boxes.
One of the objects of the present invention is to provide a simple tray support which may be easily produced and inserted in boxes to positively support the tray therein spaced from the bottom thereof.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a tray supportfor retaining a tray within a box spaced from the bottom thereof which will be independent of both the box and the tray and not attached to either.
A further object of this invention is to provide a tray support of the class described having supporting legs engageable with the tray bottom, intermediate shelf means upon which a tray is readily removabl v supported within the box spaced from the bottom thereof and means confined between the adjacent sides of the box and tray for retaining the support in position.
A. still further object of this invention is to provide a support of the class described capable of being stamped or struck in a single operation whereby the same may be produced inexpensive enough to be applied to the cheapest boxes and at the same time so complete that it may be used with the most elaborate and costly creations of the box makers skill.
Vith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention may be made as come within the scope of the claims.
In the accompanying drawing I have illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of my invention constructed according to the best mode I have so far Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4, i922.
1920. Serial No. 383,606.
devised for the practical application of the principles thereof, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box having a tray supported therein by my improved form of tray support, the box having its cover removed for the purpose of illustration Figure 2 is a top view of one of the tray supports detached;
Figure 3 is a front view of one of the box tray supports detached; and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a slightly modified form of box tray support.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawing, 5 designates a conventional form of box structure and 6, a tray positioned therein and spaced from the bottom of the box by my improved form of tray support now about to be described. In the present instance, the support is formed from a single length of wire or other similar material and is of substantially U-shape with its intermediate portion or closed end 7 positioned intermediate the adjacent end walls of the box and tray with the vertical arms thereof depending downwardly.
The vertical arms of the U are each in two sections 8 and 9, the sect-ions 8 being confined between the adjacent walls of the box and tray and the sections 9 projecting downwardly and resting upon the box bottom. The sections 9 form the supporting legs and are offset from the perpendicular, but parallel with the sections 8 and the portions connecting the adjacent sections 8 and 9 are struck or bent laterally as at 10 to provide a shelf portion upon which the adjacent edge of the tray rests.
As will be apparent from the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in packing a box in which a tray is to be supported by my improved supports, the bottom of the box is filled with the candy or other materials and my improved tray supports then inserted. One tray support is positioned centrally at each opposite end of the box with the supporting legs or sections 9 resting upon the bottom, when the tray is then inserted to confine the upper half of the inverted U, or that portion formed by the sections 7 and 8, between the adjacent walls of the box and tray. With this construction, the sections 8 of the supports are held firm between the adjacent end walls of the box tray to retain the supports in vertical position, and the tray is prevented from crushing the contents in the lower portion of the box by the shelves or sections 10.
The height at which the tray 6 is supported within the box is governechby'the' .length of the sections 9 and the distances apart of the sections 8 and 9 are also governed by the size of the tray and box with which the present invention is to be used.
In thatform of my invention depicted in Figure 4, the sections 9 of the device are eliminated and a transverse sheet of material llfsubstituted, the sheetll being secured in place by bending the ends 12 inwardly through the material as at 13 andthen upwardly as at 14 to bind the ,materialand make the same rigid with the tray support. The upper portion .of this form of my invention is identical with thathereinbefore described and the description of Figures 1, 2 and 3 will sufiice for Figure 4:.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A box tray support comprising a vertical member engageable in a box adjacent one wall thereof with its lower end resting upon the box bottom, and an intermediate supporting portion providing a shelf for receiving the adjacent end of a tray positioned within the box, the portion of said member above the intermediate supporting shelf beingconfined between the adjacent walls of the box and tray whereby the support is held in substantially vertical position.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a box'and a tray adapted to be supported therein and spaced from the bottom thereof, of means substantially independent of the box and tray for readily removably supporting the tray within the box and including supporting legs resting upon the box bottom, an upper portion confined between the adjacent walls of the box and tray, and shelf means upon which the tray rests.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a box and a tray adapted to be supported therein and spaced from the bottom thereof, of disconnected supporting members for readily removably supporting the tray within the box and each consisting of a single length of wire ofsubstantially U-shape and having laterally bent portions in the legs of the U medially of their ends to provide supporting shelves upon which the adjacent tray end is adapted to rest, the portion of the support below the laterally bent portions enga ing the box bottom and the portion above s aid bent portions being confined between the adjacent walls of the box and tray.
In testimon whereof, I affix my signature.
