UNITED STATES JAMES SAMUEL BOYD, 0F SPRAY, NORTH CAROLINA.
REGISTER.
Specifieationof Letters Patent.
Patented July 4, 1922 Application filed September 28, 1920. Serial No. 418,386.
: To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JAMES S. Born, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spray, in the county of Rockingham and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Registers, of whiclnthe following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in looms for weaving blankets and the like, the principal object of the invention being to provide counting means for registering the number of blankets formed by the loom.
Another object of the invention is to provide means whereby the register will be actuated by a roller on the chain of the control cylinder of the loom.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the sev eral parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a side elevation of the head portion of a loom showing my invention in posltion.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the invention.
Figure 3 is an enlarged face view of the dial and its associated parts.
Figure 4, is a view showing certain portions of the invention before being assembled.
of the loom frame in which are j ournaled the pattern cylinders 2 and a control cylinder 3, these cylinders supporting the chains 2' and'3, which carrytherolls in the usual manner. The cylinders 2 and rolls control the pattern of the body and boarder of the blanket while the cylinder 3 controls the operation of the cylinders 2 so as to throw the body cylinder out of operation and the boarder cylinder into operation and vice versa. The cylinders are actuated by an oscillating member 4 and its pawls 5.
As the parts above referred to and their operation are well known it is not thought necessary to describe them or their operation in detail.
In carrying out my invention I secure a supporting standard 6 on the frame 1, the
Referring to Figure 1, 1 indicates a part ceive the cylindrical part of a shaft8. A
dial plate9 is fastened to the upper part of the standard andv this dial plate has a central opening therein which registers with the hole 7. A finger 10 is secured to the squared rojecting part of shaft 8 by the nut 11 w ich engages a screw threaded extension of the shaft. A washer 12 may be placed on the squared part to space the finger from the dial plate. The shaft 8 is provided with a squared part at its rear end ending in a reduced threaded part and this squared part receives the ratchet wheel 13 and a locking disc 14:, the wheel and disc being held on the shaft by the nut 15 which engages the reduced threaded part. A locking pawl 16 is secured to the upright and engages the corrugations in the locking disc to insure a step by step movement of the shaft and consequently the finger.
An arm 17 is pivoted to a part of the frame 1 and this arm is adapted to be raised once every complete revolution of the chain 3 of the control cylinder by a roller 18 carried by said chain- The arm 17 carries a pawl 19 which engages the ratchet wheel 13, the pawl being held in engagement with said wheel by the spring 20.
The parts are preferably so arranged that when a pair of blankets has been formed the roller 18 will engage the arm 17 and thus cause the pawl to move the shaft and its finger one tooth, the dial plate having the numerals thereon so arranged that this movement of the finger will cause it to pass from one numeral to the next. Thus the register for indicating the number of pieces formed by the loom will indicate that one pair of blankets has been formed.
As it is usually customary to place ten pairs of blankets on the takeup roller the drawing indicates the dial plate with ten numerals. As soon as the register indicates that the ten pairs have been completed the device is reset ready for the next ten pair.
It will of course be understood that if it is, desired to register different numbers of pairs this can be done by using a ratchet with a different number of teeth.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may ber of blankets made by the loom said'rcgister including a rotatable shaft, a ratchet thereon, a lever pivoted to a part of the loom, a pawl carried by said lever and engaging the ratchet and a roller on the control cylinder chain for engaging the lever.
3. In combination with at 100111 and its control cylinder a supporting standard connected with the loom frame, a shaft rotatably carried by said standard, a dial plate carried by the standard having an opening therein through which the shaft extends, a finger secured to said extended part of the shaft, a ratchet wheel secured to the rear part of the shaft, a locking disc on said shaft, a locking pawl secured to the standard and engaging said disc, a lever pivoted to the 100m, a pawl carried thereby and engaging the ratchet whee] and a roller on the chain of the control cylinder for engaging said lever.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
JAMES SAMUEL BOYD.
