A. H. SHARP AND w. n. COCKRELL.
CHIMNEY CLEANER. APPLICATION FILED APR. 23, 1921.

ALONZO H. SHARP AND WILLIAM I). COCKRELL, 0F ALDRICH, MINNESOTA.
CHIMNEY CLEANER.
Application filed April 23, 1921.
T 0 all to 710m it may concern Be it known that we, AL0Nzo H. SHARP and WILLIAM D. COGKRELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Aldrich, in the county of lVadena, State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Chimney Cleaner, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a cleaner for chimneys, one of its objects being to provide a simple and compact device of this character which can be adjusted readily to fines of different sizes and which can be operated so as to slide longitudinally of the flue thereby to loosen incrustations of soot or the like on the walls thereof.
Another object is to provide a device of this character utilizing flexible scraping elements.
Another object is to provide simple and efficient means for engagement with the top of a chimney whereby the cleaner can be supported within the chimney.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed,
changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings Figure 1 is an elevation of a chimney showing the cleaner and the supporting attachment connected thereto.
Figure 2 is an enlarged elevation of the cleaner.
Figure 3 is atransverse section through the frame of the cleaner.
Figure 4 is a detail view of one end of one of the bowed members of the cleaner.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates bowed members the terminals of which are substantially parallel and are provided with longitudinal slots 2. The ends of these members are placed in lapped relation, the upper ends of the members being designed to receive a threaded stem 3 carrying nuts 4 whereby the members can be clamped together tightly at their upper ends. This stem 3 may be provided with an eye 5 at its upper end. The

lower lapping ends of the members are connected together adjustably by a bolt 6 having a clamping nut 7 thereon. Thus it will be seen that the members 1, which are preferably disposed at 90 to each other, can be ad usted toward or from each other and then secured by tightening the nuts.
The upper portion of each of the members 1 is provided with a series of openings 8 and flexible scraping devices in the form of chains 9 are looped between the members l and secured at their terminals within the openings. If desired one set of these chains can be provided, the same being sooured within the uppermost openings 8, as shown, but it is to be understood that, if preferred, two or more series of chains may be used in which event these additional chains will be fastened within the other openings 8. Under ordinary conditions, however, one series of chains such as illustrated meets all of the requirements.
In using the device the members 1 are adjusted relative to each other so that the distance between them is substantially equal to the greatest diameter of the interior of the chimney. A rope 10 is connected to the eye 5 and the device is allowed to gravitate within a chimney. It is then pulled upwardly and again lowered, this action resulting in the chains 9 moving against and dragging along the walls of the flue so as to loosen incrustations of soot and the like. The bowed members 1 also act as scraping elements.
To facilitate actuation of the cleaner a supporting device such as shown in Figure 1 may be used. This consists of parallel hangers 11 extending downwardly from supporting strips 12 adapted to rest on the top of the chimney and which strips are con nected by crossed yokes 13. A pulley 14 is suspended from the yokes at their point of intersection and the rope 10 is passed over this pulley. The lower ends of the hangers 11 are provided with eyes 15 through which is extended a tie rod or band 16. This rod extends around the chimney and can be tightened thereon in any manner desired. Eye screws 17 or the like can be fastened in the roof of the structure adjacent the walls of the chimney and tie wires 18 can be provided for connecting these eye screws to the eyes 15 at the lower ends of the hangers 11.
From the foregoing it will be apparent and downwardly that the supporting structure can be securely fastened to a chimney C and can be adjusted to chimneys of different sizes. This structure will hold the pulley l4: above the center of the chimney and by pulling on the rope l0 and then paying it outthe cleaner will be caused to travel upwardly within the chimney, thoroughly scraping the walls thereof as will be obvious.
WVhat is claimed is:
1. A cleaner of the class described including bowed scraping members radially disposed about a common axis, said members having adjustably connected lapping terminals, means connected to the terminals at one end of the members for raising and lowering the device, and looped flexible cleaning elements interposed between and connected to the upper portions of the bowed members.
2. In a device of the class described the combination with bowed scraping members radially disposed about a common axis, said members having lapping adjustably connected terminals, of means for binding together the terminals of said members for holding them in adjusted relation, supporting means connected to the terminals at one end of the bowed members, and chains looped betweenthe members and connected at their upper ends to the upper portions of the members.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own, we have hereto aflixed our signatures in the. presence of two witnesses.
