MOVABLE PAINTERS PLATFORM.
Application filed January 20, 1920.
Be it known that we, EARL J. STURM and MORRIS SURNsoN, citizens of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements'in a Movable Painters Platform, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a movable painters platform and has particular relation to a platform specially designed for use in painting the walls of oil tanks and other similar circular structures.
One object of theinvention is to provide a movable platform which serves as a mount fora painter while painting the outer sur face of a circular wall, such as the wall of an oil tank or similar structure.
Another object of theinvention is to provide a suspended platform in combination with a mechanism whereby said platform may be elevated and lowered and moved around the structure, so that all parts of the wall may be reached and painted by the painter, without demounting from said platform.
'With the above and other objects in view, the invention has particular relation to certain novel features of construction, operation and use, an example of which is given in this specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1, shows a perspective view of an oil tank, showing the device applied thereto.
Figure 2, shows a plan view of the framework and operative mechanism of the device.
Figure 3, shows a sectional view taken on the line, 3, 3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4, shows a sectional view taken on the line l4 of Figure 2.
Figure 5, shows aplan view of the crown Figure 6 shows a transverse sectional view thereof and Figure 7, shows a side view of the chain wheel employed.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings wherein like numerals of reference designate similar parts in each of the figures, the numeral 1 refers to the circular wall of the structure, which has the circu- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4t, 1322.
Serial No. 352,670.
Upstanding from the crown cap there is a spindle 7, to which the upper end of the radial stay rod 8 is attached. i
The numeral 9 refers to a framework which is composed of suitable side members spaced apart and which are secured in fixed relation by means of the end members 9, 9. Secured to this frame there is a radially extending arm 10, to the free end of which the lower end of the radial stay rod 8 is attached and said free end has'a rotatable bearing wheel 11. which travels around on the roof 2.
The frame 9 is supported on the margin of the roof by means of the carrier wheels 12 and 13, which are fixed upon suitable axles rotatably mounted in bearings carried by said frame.
Rotatably mounted in suitable bearings carried by the frame 9, there is a transverse counter shaft 14:, fixed to the outer end of which there is a chain pulley 15 and there is also fixed upon said shaft a small sprocket wheel 16, which is in alignment with a larger sprocket wheel 17 which is fixed on the axle of the carrier wheel 13 and operating over said sprocket wheels and transmitting rotation from the former to the latter there is a sprocket chain 18.
The end members 9 project out beyond the roof and there is suspended from said projecting ends a platform 19 provided to sustain the painter and his appliances. This platform is suspended by means of the usual bIOckand- tackle arrangements 20, 20 through which the platform may be easily elevated and lowered in the usual way.
Operating over the chain pulley 15, there is 'a chain 21 within reach of the painter and by a suitable manipulation of said chain, the pulley 15 may be turned, thereby transmitting rotation to its shaft 1 1 and 0pcrating through the mechanism described to for securing said spindle ,at the center of a circular'iroof, the ,,other .end ofssaid rod -.be-
atta 'che d to saidjspindlessaid;stay rod vbe ng adapted to retain said device in posi- .;tion' to besnpported {by said carrier wheels iengaging-themargin of said roof, :a plat- ,forrn, means suspending; said platform from said framework. through. whichr the platform maybe televated and' lowered. and ,a mechanism thronghflwhich one of said carrier yvheelsi may be rotated to move said device ,around; said margin.
2. A device of the characterv described con- ,sisting ofa crown cap, adaptedrtolbeposi- .tionedatthe center of. a circular roof, radiallly extending cables whose: outerends are adapted -tobe secured tosthe margin of the roof, tightening :rods. attached at one end to the'crown cap and-whose other ends are ;a t- ,tached to theMrespective cables, ;means for ,adjnsti-ng said. rods,a spindle carr ed by said crown cap, a framework composed of suitable side members andenid members the latter of which project out beyond the roof, a radially extending arm carried by said frameworln'a radial stay rod oneend of which is attached'to said spindle and the otherendof which is attached to said arm,
a rotatable bearing wheel carried by said arm, carrier wheels adapted to support said framework on the margin offth'e roof, a transverse -sha-ftrotatably mounted in said framework, a chain pulley and small sprocket wheel fixed tothe said shaft,-a larger sprocket wheelzfixedto one ofsaid carrier wheel axles and .inalignment'with saidfirst mentioned sprocket wheel, a :sprocketchain operating over said sprocket wheels, :a (platform suspended :from the projecting ends of said :end members, 1 means for elevating and lowering said platform, ;a 2.6113111]. nperating over Said chain pulleyL-throngh whichsaid pulley the shaft to 5 which it.v isfixed may be 5 rotated, and rotation thereby: transmitted to the carrier wheel.
In testimony whereof we have -,signed our names to this specification in the presence oftwo subscribing Witnesses.
