Description

E. H. HANEY.
FIRE FIGHTING ELEVATOR. APPLICATION FILED DEG.19, 1911.
1,030,468. Patented June 25, 1912.
ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWIN H. HANEY, OF STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO HANEY FIRE APPARATUS COMPANY, OF STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA, A CORPORATION.
FIRE-FIGHTING ELEVATOR.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN H. HANEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire- Fighting Elevators; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in fire fighting apparatus and particularly to a firefighting elevator used on the sides of buildings for raising and lowering the fire fighting apparatus for firemen or to be used as the fire escape, the main features of the invention being shown in my pending application for a patent, filed June 7, 1910, Ser. No. 565,632, the object of the present invention being to add an improvement to said previously filed application, to-wit; a means for operating the elevator horizontally as well as vertically along the side of the build lng.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the elevator showing my improved apparatus applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, 1 designates the elevator, 2 the track to be disposed on the top of the building, 8 the rollers running on said track and provided with hangers carrying a frame 5 in which are mounted the lifting pulleys, a descrip- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 19, 1911.

tion of which will not be given at this time, the same being fully described in my previous application.
In order to move my improved elevator horizontally along the track 2 I provide the following mechanism, to-wit; on the cage 1 I provide a pulley 6 adapted to be driven by the motive means of the elevator, not here shown, and on the outer ends of the frame 5 I provide two spaced pulleys 7 and 8. I then mount an endless cable 9 over the pulley 6 over the pulley 7, under a pulley 10, carrying a suspended weight 11 and thence over the pulley 8. On the shaft 12 of the pulley 7 is a gear 13 intermeshing with a gear 14 on a shaft 15 of one of the rollers 3 and hence with the revolution of the pulley 6, this pulley 7 is driven by a cable 9 which drives the gear 13, the gear 1% and incidentally the wheel 3 connected with said gear 14, which propels the entire structure along the rail 2 in either direction accordingly as the pulley 6 is driven in one direction or the other. As the elevator 1 raises or lowers the pulley 10, and its weight 11 takes up or lets out the cable 9 in order to keep it tight over the pulleys under all conditions. I
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the object of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A device of the character described comprising a rail, rollers mounted on said rail, hangers on said rollers, a frame mounted on said hangers and having a pair of projecting arms at one end, an elevator swung from said frame and being capable of being raised or lowered, a pulley on said elevator, a pulley journaled in each of said arms and at right angles to said first named pulley, an independent pulley disposed at right angles to said pulleys in said arms and In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN H. HANEY.
