RICHARD MCKNIGHT, F CHIGAGD, ILLINOIS.
FILING DEVICE.
Application led February 12, 1921.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD MoKNiGH'r,
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements 1n filing devices, the present inventlon constituting an improvement on the invention disclosed in my prior Patent No. 1,171,529 granted me on February 15, 1916 for flllng devices. The object of the present invention is to provide an improved arrangement especially adapted for applyingr the devices set forth in said patent and more especially an arrangement whereby such a device may be readily applied to a filing cabinet or receptacle not especially designed for such use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in thecombinations and arrangementsof partshereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
F ig.v l, is a perspective view illustrating a construction emboding the invention in position of use, A
F ig.'2, lan enlarged detailed perspective view illustrating a section of one edge of the v filing tray or drawer illustrated in Fig. 1, Fig. 3, a perspective view of one of a plurality of channel members employed in the construction, y
Fig. 4, a perspective view of one of a plurality of supporting clips vemployed in the construction,
/F ig. 5, an exterior elevation of an upper corner of the filing tray or drawer,
` Fig. 6 a view similar to Fig. 4, but showing a slightly mgdified form of supl porting clip,
Fig. 7, a transverse section through the side of a filing drawer or tray showing the clip illustrated in Fig. 6 in position of use,
Fig. 8, an exterior elevation of the construction illustrated in Fig. 7 and Fig. 9, a similar view, with portions broken away, showing the opposite end of the drawer or tray.
The form of construction illustrated in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, comprises a plurality of supporting clips 1Q made of sheet metal Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4L, 1922.
Serial No. 444,394.
and substantially Z-shaped in cross section, each clip being provided at its bottom with an inwardly and upwardly bent supporting 11p 11 forming a narrow supporting channel as shown. At its upper end each of the clips 10 1s provided with an outwardly and downwardly turned lip or flange 12 forming a wide supporting channel adapted and arranged to fit over the edges of the filing drawer or tray 13. The form of tray illustrated 1s made of sheet metal provided at its upper edges with the usual reenforcing b eads or l1ps 14 whereby said tray is suliclently stiffened and straightened longitudlnally to serve its purpose. In order to render the engagement with this bead a stable one, I provide channel members 15 p adapted to lit over said bead and rest against the outer side of the tray, the clamping jaw 12 of the clip fitting snugly over said channel member as best showIT in Fig. 2. By this arrangement the clips 10 may be readily applied to the sides of a sheet. metal drawer or tray and securely held in place with the supporting lips 11 positioned against the inner surfaces of the sides thereof, two of said clips being applied to each side of the tray as indicated in Fig. 1.
Longitudinal guide members 16 are mounted to extend along the tops of the sides of the tray 13. These guide members are made of sheet metal in channel form and provided with depending aprons or sup'- porting flanges 17 adapted to snugly fit vbehind the lips 11 with the bodies of the guide members resting on the tops of the clips 1U. By this arrangement it will be observed that the guides 16 may be readily applied to any ordinary sheet metal tray or drawer.
Each of the guide members 16 is provided with an. open guide slot 18 adapted to receive the hook projections 19 of supporting bars 19 adapted and arranged to support the iexible strip or apron 2O constituting the filing element proper as set forth in my said prior patent. This arrangement constitutes a simple and effective arrangement for guiding the supporting bars 1Q and permitting of their ready attachment to or detachment from the tray, said supporting bars being readily removed from the guides when desired as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2.
Eachl of the guide members 16 is provided at each end thereof with a' downwardly and inwardly turned lug or ear 21 arranged tov limit the movements of the bars 19 and prevent their accidental displacement from the ends of said channel members.
The modified form of construction illustrated in Figs. 6 to 9 'inclusive is identical with that already described except that the arrangement is such as to be attached to a wooden drawer or tray instead of a sheet metal drawer or tray. To this end the clips 10 are provided with perforated flanges 22 adapted and arranged to -rest over on the tops of the tra sides and secured in place by screws 23. therwise the construction is identical with that already described and needs no further description. y
While I have illustrated and described the preferred formof construction for carrying my invention into effect, th1s .1s capable of variation and modification wlthout departure from the s irit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of constr tion set forth, but desire to avail myself of Such variations and modifications as come wiithin the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a filing receptacle, of supporting clips fitting over and detachably engaging the sides thereof; and guides detachably supported by said' clips, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a filing receptacle, of supporting clips fittino over and .detachably engaging the sides thereof; up-
wardly turned supporting lips on said clips forming' channels; and guides provided with supporting means fitting said channels, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a filing receptacle, of supportin clips substantially Z- shaped in cross section, said clips being provided at their tops with outwardly extending channels adapted to fit snugly over the sides of said receptacle and at their bottoms with upwardly turned supporting lips forming channels; 'and guides. provided with supporting means snugly fitting said supporting channels, substantially. as Adescribed.
4. The combination with a filing receptacle, of supporting'clips fitting over and detachably engaging the sides thereof; and guides detachably supported by said clips, said guides being provided with stops at their ends, substantially as' described.
5. The combination with va filing receptacle, of supporting clips secured to the sides thereof; upwardly turne'd supporting lips on said clips forming channels;'and sheet metal guides adapted to rest upon the tops of said clips and provided with depending-flanges snugly fitting said channels, said guides being provided with inwardly turned stop plugs at `their ends,
substantially as described.
6. The combination with a sheet metal receptacle having a reenforcing bead at its upper edges, of a channel member fitting over said bead and resting against the side of said receptacle; and a clip fitting over said channel member, substantially as described.
7 The combination with a. sheet metal receptaclehaving a reenforcing bead at its upper edges, of a channel member fittin-g over said bead and resting against the side of said receptacle; a clip substantially Z- shaped in cross section provided at its top with a downwardly vextending clam ing jaw fitting over said channel and at its ottom with an upwardly extending supporting lip, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification lin the presence of one subscribing witness.
RICHARD MCKNIGHT.
