Description
UNITED STATES PATENT Orrron JAMES P. STARK, OF MOBRISONVILLE, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO JAMES F. SIMPSON, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN WEATHER-THRESHOLDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,132, dated August 26, 1873; application filed May 26, 1873.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES P. STARK, of Morrisonville, in the county of Christian and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Weather-Strips and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap'device, readily applicable to doors by simply beveling the lower edge on the inner side of the same; which device consists of a metallic plate, which, when screwed, nailed, or otherwise secured to the inside of the door over the beveled edge of the same, presents an internal curved flange, extending the whole width of the door, and terminates at the edge of the door in a curved or cam-formed device, which will elevate a hinged weather-strip (applied to the sill of the door) in the lastact of closing the door.
But that my invention may be fully understood, I will describe it in detail by aid of the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 shows an inside view of a door with my improved device applied thereto. Fig. 2 represents a section of a door, the same being closed,'with my improved device applied. Fig. 3 is a section of a door, the same being open, with the device applied. Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views of the device detached from the door.
a is the door; I) b, side posts, and c the sill, of the door. dis a weather-strip hinged to the sill c at e c. The under side of the door is beveled, as indicated at a, to give room for r the weather-strip at when raised. My improved device consists of a metallic plate, f, which is screwed or otherwise secured to the door a. This metallic plate f is formed straight or flat from i to i, and from t" to t is curved, so as to form an internal curved flange to give room for the weather-strip d. When the device is applied to the edge of the door, it extends the whole width, and has the portion g bent at a right angle to fit the front or outer edge of the door, and terminates at said outer edge in a curved or cam-shaped device, h, which, when the door is in the act of closing, will pass under the weather-strip d, and raise the same into the position shown in Fig. 2, and which, when the door is again opened, will release said strip, and allow it to assume the position represented in Fig. 3, out of the way of persons passing through the door-way.
Having thus described my invention, I would have it understood that I lay no claim to the hinged weather-strip d, nor to the camshaped device h for lifting the Weatherstrip, when separately considered; but
What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a hinged weather-strip, d, and a cam-shaped device, h, a plate, f, adapted to be affixed to a door, which, when so applied, shall present an internal curved flange the whole width of the door, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand.
JAMES P. STARK.
Witnesses:
JAMES F. SIMrsoN, WILLIAM VARBLE.
