WILLIAM JAMES earner @FFIQE.
REFILLABLE mam HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 27, 1922.
Application filed August 3, 1921. Serial No. 489,554.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM JAMES M ATT, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Argent Works, Frederick Street, in the city of Birmingham, England, have, invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Be fillable Pencil Holders (for which I have made application in Great BritainOct. a, 1920), of which the following is a specilication.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved refillable pencil holder.
Referring to the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Figure 2 a longitudinal section of a pencil holder constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figures 3 and 4 are respectively elevations of the two main parts of the feeding device.
In carrying the invention into effect, a tubular body a has screwed to one end of it a removable part Z) serving as a guide and support for the lead. The body is slottedv (as indicated by c) to an extent determined by the total feeding movement required for the lead, and internally is fitted with a pair of relatively movable members (Z, 0 forming the main portions of the lead feeding mechanism. Both members are of cylindrical form, and a part of one slides over a part of the other. Around the one (o) and bearing against the other ((Z) is aspiral spring f which tends to force the said members apart. The relative movement of these members is limited by a slot or hole 9 in one which is engaged by a transverse pin h in the other T he amount of this movement is that by which the lead can be fed forward at each operation of the feeding device. One of the said members is adapted to fit tightly against, though it can slide within the interior of the body, and this member is secured to an outer sleeve i by a pin j which passes transversely through the long slot 0 in the body. The required frictional grip between the member (Z and the body is obtained by a bent steel wire whose sides press by their spring action tightly against the inner surface of the body. This wire is inserted through a transverse hole 7c in the part d. The mem ber e is provided with a wire stem m which passes through a guide a at the lower end of the body and abuts against the inner end of the lead Z.
The end of the body opposite that at which the lead projects may contain a receptaclo 0 for spare leads.
Starting with a new lead inserted in position, the point of the pencil is pressed against a table, thus pushing the lead inwards until its end is flush with the outer end of the pencil. The outer sleeve 2' is then pressed down along the body to the extent permitted by the relative movement allowed between the members (Z, 6, of the feeding device. In this action the spring 7 is compressed. On raising the pencil the said spring asserts itself and presses forward the lead through the medium of the wire stem m and the second member 6 of the feeding device, the member d being meanwhile held stationary by its frictional grip on the body a. When it is again required to feed forward the lead the same operation is performed. The feeding movements can be continued until the whole of the lead has been expended. The amount of unexpended lead inthe pencil is always apparent by the position of the sleeve i on the body. Before recharging, the sleeve is returned to its initial position, and thereby caused to return the feeding device.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In refillable pencil holders, the combination of a slotted tubular body, a sleeve movable on the exterior of the body, a lead carried by the body, a pair of relatively movable feed members within the body, one member being connected to the sleeve and the other adapted to act on the lead, aspring for exerting a frictional grip between the one member and the interior of the body, and a spring acting between the two members, substantially as described.
2. In refillable pencil holders, the combination of a slotted tubular body, a sleeve movable on the exterior of the body, a lead carried by the body, a pair of relatively movable telescopic feed members within the body, a pin passing through the slotted body tional grip on the interior of thebody, a Y
members, and a guide for the lead detachably secured to one end of the body, substantially as described. 10
In testimony whereof I have si ned my name to this specification.
KVILLIAM JAMES MYATT.
