{INVENTOR.
ATTORNEY.
UNITED STATES WALTER W. SHORDAY, OF LAWNDALE, PENNSYLVANIA.
HANDLE FOR PAPER CONTAINERS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 20, 1922.
Application filed November 12, 1920. Serial No. 423,542.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that lVAL'rER \V. SHORDAY, a citizen of the United Statea residing at Lawndale, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Paper Containers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to handles or carryingmeans for paper or card-board containers.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of the class just described whereby the said handles or carrying means are integral with the container structure, being a continuation of the side walls thereof, and which are formed from the side wings or flaps provided on the conventional type of paper or card-board container; cut out portions of said wings providing means to enable the user to properly grasp said handles and also providing meansto retain the lid or cover of such container in a closed position. The device can be made a part of any container having side flaps or wings which are cut as a continuation of the side walls.
A further object is to provide carrying means of this character which are simple, practical and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and the operation of which is assured.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim appended hereto.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the preferred embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a perspective view thereof illustrating the method of folding the cut out portions of the wings under the lid preparatory to closing the container;
Figure 3 is a side view of the container with the lid and cut out wing portions folded therein and the handles in an upri ht position for carrying purposes;
igure 4 is a front view of the container with the top and cut out wing' portions folded therein and the handles in the position they assume when the container is being carried by hand.
Like reference characters denote like parts throughout the drawin s. Referring more partlcularly to the drawlngs a conventional form of paper or cardboard container A adapted to contain ice cream and like substances, is provided with the usual side walls 16, front wall 15, rear wall 17 a bottom or base 14 and a top cover or lid 10 having a tongue 11 adapted to fold inside the front wall 15.
The said side walls 16 are continued upwardly in the conventional manner forming side wings or flaps B which are ordinarily adapted to fold across the top of the container A and beneath the cover 10 to secure the contents in said container. Said side wings B in the present device, however, are utilized as handles or carrying means for the container.
In Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive portions of the side wings B are cut out to form flaps 13 adapted to fold across the top of the container A and beneath the cover 10 in the usual manner, the remaining portions or walls of said wings forming handles 12, the apertures 12 therein providing means of gripping said handles. a
The said cut out portions 13 of the side wings B are creased hinged on the, plane of the top of the container.
When the cover flaps are folded in position and the handles 12 are inclined inwardly'by being grasped by the fingers of the carrier, as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawing, the bases of said handles im inge against the tongued cover flap 10 holding it securely in position.
The above description discloses means);
whereby the side wings cut as a continuation of the side walls of a conventional paper or card-board container may be formed to provide handles or carrying means for said container and also means to secure the cover in position, that are new, novel and efficient.
Minor modifications not involving invention may be made to the device without departing from the spirit and scope of this invention.
I claim:
1. In combination, a paper container having a three fold cover, comprising a tongued top flap and duplicate side flaps cut from vertical continuations of the side walls to the depth of the top of said container and creased hinged on the plane thereof, adapted to be folded inwardly and across the open top of the container, beneath said tongued top flap,.the remaining portions of the side walls providingcarrying means for said container, substantially as described.
2. In combination, a paper container having a three fold cover, comprising a tongued top flap and duplicate side flaps out from vertical continuations of the side Walls to the depth of the top of said container and WALTER W. SHORDAY.
