Description

Patented Nov. 18, 1941 provide a blank which closed when access is said container.
.end of said carton -on lines 5, I. 1, 8, 8, III,
UNITED STATE s PATENT VAOFFICE ZCIaimS.
This invention relates tol improvements in wrappers or containers particularly, such as paper sheets.
top thereof. Such boxes, aside from being expensiveare inconvenient and unsatisfactory in use for the reason-that, when a number of such containers are stacked one upon the other, it is necessary to remove all of the boxes on top of a particular one in order that the cover thereof may be removed for access to its contents. y
It is' an object of this invention, therefore, to may be readily used as a wrapper to form, for, a quantity of paper sheets, or other' commodity, a container which will not have the tendency to become unfolded and which may be stacked with other containers without being damaged.
A further object is to provide a container in which the ends thereof are normally locked in closed position but which canl be altered to a predetermined form, by a simple operation, so that the said ends maybe easily opened and desired to the interior of Further objects and advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the following description land from the drawing in which:
Figure l is a plan view of a blank for a wrapper comprising my invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of shown in partly folded condition.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the same the eeid'blank which are especially adapted for packaging various commodities, and
' zo, 21,22 and zaso that v folded down upon the said in a completely folded condition and with partsbroken away to show the construction oi the carton formed thereby.
Figure 4 is a perspective view illustrating the in open position after the same has beenv altered as provided for by my invention.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 3 but showing the same altered in construction to permit opening of an end'thereof.
As shown in the'drawings, my or wrapper consists'of a II and I2 to provide a bottom I8, sides Il and I5, ends I8 and J1, end aps I8 and I8, side flaps 2l, 2l, 22 and 28. end iiap extensions 24, 2B, 28 and 21, and cover portions 28 and 28. The cover portion 28 is provided with slits 20-30 to receive'ears 2I3|. The said blank is cut as illustrated at `818a improved carton Y blank which is scored 20, 2|, 22 and 23 are then and "M -Illa, by the eavy portions' of score lines 9 and I-ll,y to separate the flaps 20, 2|, 22 and 23 from the side and cover portions. The said blank is' 'also cut through as illustrated at As now commonly done, paper. or stationary. 6 la and Iza, bythe heavy portions of the score l is packaged in two-piece boxes which consist unes il and l2, to seperate the extensions 24, of a lower4 container and a cover tting over the 25, 26. and 21 from the iiaps 20, 2l, 22 and 23.
It will be noted that'I have provided on the said blank, tear lines I8al8a and I9a-Y-I9a, on the end iiaps I8 and I9, and tear lines 20a 'and 2Ia, 22a and 23a are also provided on the flaps the said extensions 24, 25, 26 and 21 and flaps be torn off on their 'respective tear lines when desired for the purpose to be hereinafter pointed .bottom portion I3 -of the wrapper blank. The
said blank is then respectively folded on score lines 5, 6, 9 and I0, bringing the ends I6 and n I1' against the pileof papersheets. The flaps folded, on the extenlines 5 and 8, against the sides end flaps I8 and I9 are then flaps and the extensions 28, 25,- 2i and 21 thereof are folded down on the extensions of score lines 5 and 6 againstl the 'sides of the flaps 20, 2|, 22 and 23, as will be clearly seen from the The cover portion 28 is then folded down upon the said pile, on the score line 1, and the cover portion 29 is folded on the score line 8 to overlie the portion inserted through the slits -30 to lock the wrapper in the condition illustrated in Figure 3 of the drawing. Y
In this condition, the iiaps 20, 2|, 22 and 23 are securely held in position by means of the cover portions overlying them so that the ends I6 and I1 are locked thereby and prevented from being pushed open by the weight of the contents loi said carton. The end flaps I8 and I9 further serve to hold the paperv sheets in position sions of the score of said pile. The
and, with their extensions, 28;' 28 and 21, will n 20, 2|, 22 and 23 may illustration in Figure 24.
28. The ears 8I-3l may be then y 42li, 2|, 2 2 and 23 and on the end aps l the carton so that a few sheets at the carton during storage and shipment.
` formed from a wrapper 3 side flaps on said end rs and ls,
the purpose of which will now be described.
vWhen it is desired to alter .the condition of be taken out oi' the same without requiring removal thereof from the stack of cartons in which it may be positioned, the extensions at one end a time may l ting the ends I6 and I8 to be pulled out and Y thereby render access said carton. 4 c l When it is desired to close the said end, the remaining portions of the aps 22 and 23 are to the sheets of paper in pushed back into rthe carton with the iiap I8, thus returning the end I6 to its closing position.
It wil be understood that the extensions 24, 25, 26 and 21 will serve to reinforce the corners of 'Ihe said portions may be torn off as desired by opening the carton, to the condition shown in Figure 2, and prior to stacking said carton in a Dosition from which the paper is to be removed therefrom, at which time the contents oi' said cartons may also be inspected.
It will be understood from thev above descrip- `v tion that I have provided, by my invention,` a
wrapper which is particularly adapted to form a carton that is rugged in construction and highly emcient for the packaging of a commodity during the storage and transportation thereof and which may, by a simple operation, be altered to permit opening of said carton for removal of the contents thereof, as desired, without requiring i that the same be taken out of a stack, fin which it may be positioned.
1. A container of the character described blank of sheet material end and cover portions, portions adapted to exincluding bottom, side,
-be folded downwardly and positioned betweenA tend inwardly in lsaid container and be positioned between the said bottom and cover por-v tions to thereby retain the said endV portions against displacement, end iiaps on said end portions, and extensions on saidv end flaps for reinforcing the corners of said container; the said blank having score lines thereon defining the said extensions from the saidend iiaps, tear lines extending diagonally across the corners of said end aps from said score lines to the free edge of said end flaps, and separate tear lines extending diagonally across the said side aps; whereby the said extensions and corner portions of the end aps may be torn ofi"- on a portion of the said score lines and on the tear lines across the corners of said end flaps, and a portion of said side flaps may be torn oii on the score lines extending across the same, for altering the blank to a pre-determined form and thereby facilitating opening and closing of said container through the end thereof.
2. A container of the character described, comprising a wrapper of sheet material which is` scored to provide the bottom, side, end and cover portions thereof, side flaps on `.said end portions adaptedto extend inwardly in said container betweenthe said bottom and cover portions' to retain the said end portion against displacement, an end flap extending inwardly from an'end portion, extensions from said end flap adapted to the said side flaps and side portions for reinforcing the corners ofv said container, and means whereby corner portion of said end flap, said extensions and portions of said side flaps maybe torn olf on pre-determined lines to facilitate opening and closing of said container from the.
end thereof; said means comprising score lines between said extensions and end iiap, tear lines extending diagonally across the outer 'corners of said end" flap from said score lines to the free edge of said end flap, and tear lines extending across the said side' iiaps.
